How to Fix YouTube Stream Health Warnings Caused by Mismatched Audio Sample Rates

YouTube Live recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. Learn how to check encoder output, match primary and backup feeds, and verify the fix.

If YouTube Live says “Please correct the sample rate for audio in the stream to 44.1 KHz,” set your encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz for stereo. If you are streaming in 5.1 surround, YouTube recommends 48 kHz instead. When primary and backup feeds are both configured, their audio sample rates must match. Test with representative audio and confirm the warning clears in Live Control Room before relying on the stream.

Identify which audio setting applies

The correct rate depends on the stream’s channel format, not simply on whether the video is live or uploaded. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations distinguish stereo from 5.1 surround sound.

Use YouTube recommendation What to check
Live stereo 44.1 kHz Set the encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz.
Live 5.1 surround 48 kHz Confirm the stream is actually configured for 5.1 before using this setting. YouTube’s dedicated 5.1 guidance also specifies 384 Kbps; RTMP ingestion supports 5.1 only with AAC, while HLS supports AAC, AC3, and EAC3.
Uploaded video 48 kHz in YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations This upload recommendation is not a replacement for the 44.1 kHz live-stereo setting.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, 5.1 surround guidance, and separate upload encoding recommendations.

Fix the warning step by step

  1. Read the exact warning in YouTube Studio. The Live Dashboard and Live Control Room show errors alongside the Health Indicator. YouTube’s error reference says unresolved errors continue to appear. The sample-rate warning explicitly requests 44.1 kHz. Open YouTube’s live streaming error messages if you need to confirm the wording.
  2. Find the encoder’s outgoing audio sample-rate setting. Set it to 44.1 kHz for a stereo live stream. Encoder menus differ, so look for the setting that controls the audio sent to YouTube rather than assuming a particular menu path or changing an unrelated playback-device setting.
  3. Check whether you are sending 5.1. If the stream is intentionally 5.1 surround, use YouTube’s recommended 48 kHz setting and confirm that the codec and ingestion protocol meet YouTube’s 5.1 requirements. Do not switch a stereo stream to 48 kHz just because YouTube recommends that rate for uploaded video.
  4. Match primary and backup feeds. If your setup sends both, configure the same audio sample rate on each. YouTube identifies differing primary and backup audio rates as a stream error; both should use the rate appropriate to the stream format.
  5. Test before the event. Send a pre-stream test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check the Health Indicator and messages in Live Control Room, then monitor them during the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring, but does not specify a universal test duration. See its encoder recommendations and live stream metrics guidance.

If the warning remains

After confirming the outgoing rate and matching any primary and backup feeds, check the encoder’s audio routing and device configuration: the stream may be receiving audio from a different path than the setting you changed. Recheck the current status and specific error messages in Live Control Room. YouTube’s cited guidance does not document app-specific hardware diagnostics, and this warning alone does not establish that new audio hardware is needed.

  • You use 5.1: verify the channel format and use the 5.1 guidance rather than applying the stereo value blindly.
  • You use primary and backup: compare the configured sample rates on both feeds, not just the active one.
  • You changed an upload preset: check the live encoder setting separately; upload and live recommendations are distinct.
  • You use HLS: HLS has additional segment and transport requirements, but a sample-rate warning alone is not a reason to change protocols. YouTube gives live audio recommendations in its HLS setup guidance as well.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded documentaries or other prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or a playlist without requiring your computer, OBS, or home connection to stay on. It is separate from diagnosing an encoder’s sample-rate warning: use the format-specific checks above for a live encoder feed.

  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

There is no need to keep a computer running at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
