YouTube Live Stream Stops When OBS Shows “Encoding Overloaded”: How to Check the Log

An OBS “Encoding overloaded” warning alone cannot explain a stopped YouTube stream. Check the log for performance lag, dropped frames, and reconnects to find the right troubleshooting path.

An OBS “Encoding overloaded” warning is a clue, not proof that encoding caused your YouTube stream to stop. Check the final OBS session log for encoding lag, rendering lag, dropped frames, and reconnect messages; they point to different problems and different fixes. If the log is not available, the cause cannot be identified from the warning alone.

Find the right OBS log and inspect the final session

OBS logs record events from a session, so start with the one that covers the interruption—not an older session or a warning taken out of context. In OBS, open Help > Log Files > View Current Log while the relevant session is open, or use Help > Log Files > Upload Current Log to generate a shareable log. If OBS has been closed, check Help > Log Files > Show Log Files the next time it is running and choose the file corresponding to the session and stop time.

  1. Locate the final streaming session and note when the stream stopped.
  2. Read the surrounding entries for encoding-lag or skipped-frame messages, rendering lag, dropped frames, reconnect attempts, or shutdown messages.
  3. Compare the log timeline with YouTube’s stream-health messages, if available. A warning that appeared earlier may not explain the eventual stop.
  4. Note whether more than one kind of warning occurred. Performance and network problems can coexist.

Log labels can vary with OBS versions and configurations. Look for the category and context of the event rather than treating one particular phrase as a complete diagnosis.

Tell encoding and rendering trouble apart from network trouble

OBS uses GPU time both to render and composite scenes and, depending on the chosen encoder and system, to encode output. A machine can therefore struggle even if a game or desktop appears to be running smoothly. By contrast, OBS classifies dropped frames caused by connection stalls as a connection-to-ingest problem: the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can lead to a disconnection.

Evidence in OBS or YouTube What it points to First response
Encoding overload, encoding lag, or skipped frames OBS may not be completing encoding work in time, or available system resources may be constrained. The exact bottleneck depends on the encoder and computer. Reduce competing GPU work, cap a game’s frame rate, lower output settings, or simplify the scene and sources.
Rendering lag OBS may not have enough GPU resources to compose and render the scene on time. Reduce GPU competition and scene complexity; lower output resolution or frame rate if needed.
Dropped frames due to connection stalls or intermittent disconnections The route to the ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Check upload stability and bitrate, then investigate Wi-Fi, network software, drivers, router conditions, or the selected server.
YouTube stream-health warning YouTube is reporting an ingest or stream issue. Its message should be considered alongside OBS events. Read the specific health message, test before the event, and monitor stream health while live.

An encoding warning does not rule out a network failure, and a dropped-frame warning does not prove that encoding was healthy. Follow the evidence from the log and YouTube together rather than replacing hardware or changing network settings based on one alert. OBS treats performance overload and connection-related dropped frames as separate troubleshooting categories: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting and OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Fix performance pressure when the log points to OBS

Change one setting at a time, then repeat the test under comparable conditions. OBS’s performance guidance, dated June 12, 2021, identifies GPU load and bottlenecks between the GPU and the rest of the system as possible reasons OBS cannot keep up.

  • Free GPU and system resources. Close other GPU-intensive programs, including a second game or applications doing GPU-based work.
  • Limit game workload. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not consume GPU capacity OBS needs.
  • Reduce output demands. Lower the output resolution or frame rate, then check whether the log shows less encoding or rendering lag.
  • Simplify the scene. Remove sources and filters that are not needed. Expensive sources, browser sources, and large scene collections can contribute to workload.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. This is one of the Windows-specific suggestions in OBS’s performance guide.

These steps address performance pressure; they do not establish that the encoder itself is defective. If rendering lag is prominent, focus first on GPU competition and scene complexity. If encoding lag persists after reducing workload, record the OBS version, operating system, selected encoder, output settings, and relevant log entries before seeking setup-specific help.

Fix dropped frames and connection stalls separately

If the log mainly shows dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server rather than treating encoding overload as the sole cause. OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate.

  1. Check that upload capacity is stable. A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that the connection can sustain a live bitrate throughout a broadcast.
  2. Try a lower bitrate. OBS lists lowering bitrate as a connection troubleshooting step. Retest to see whether dropped frames lessen.
  3. Try another ingest server. A different server may help if the selected route is problematic.
  4. Prefer wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable. Also check network software, drivers, router conditions, and other connection issues.
  5. Retest under the same conditions. Compare the new log’s dropped-frame and reconnect events with the original session.

Do not lower bitrate as the first response to encoding lag unless the log also points to a connection constraint. Conversely, buying a GPU is not a direct fix for dropped frames without evidence of a performance bottleneck.

Set YouTube encoder options for a reliable test

YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; a single bitrate is not universal. Its help guidance recommends a quality that the internet connection can reliably support, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health and messages. The following figures are YouTube recommendations for 1080p at 60 fps, not guarantees for a particular computer or connection:

YouTube’s cited encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Confirm that your encoder and chosen settings meet YouTube’s current recommendations for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you use: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Run a representative test before the next broadcast

A quiet test screen may not reveal the workload of a real programme. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then checking stream health and messages.

  1. Use the intended scene, sources, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate.
  2. Include representative motion and audio for long enough to observe whether the problem recurs.
  3. Monitor OBS’s stats or log for encoding lag, rendering lag, dropped frames, and reconnect attempts; monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages at the same time.
  4. Change one relevant setting and repeat the test, so the result helps distinguish causes.

Common failure patterns and what to try next

OBS says encoding overloaded, but the stream remains connected

The warning identifies performance pressure, not necessarily a stopped stream. Check whether encoding or rendering lag is accumulating, reduce GPU workload or output demands, and verify the next test before making more changes.

The stream stops after dropped frames build up

Investigate upload stability and the route to ingest. Try a lower bitrate or a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable, then review whether dropped frames and reconnect events fall in the next log.

The log shows both lag and dropped frames

Treat them as two possible constraints. Reduce OBS workload and separately test the connection; changing only one side can leave the other failure mode intact.

YouTube reports a health issue but the OBS cause is unclear

Use the precise YouTube message with the OBS timeline. The warning text matters; without it and the relevant log, no specific cause can be established.

The problem returns only in a demanding scene or game

That pattern is consistent with a workload change, but confirm it in the log. Simplify the scene, close competing GPU applications, or cap the game’s frame rate and run the representative test again.

Or let it run in the cloud
