If a YouTube live stream stops after your Windows PC has been idle, first check whether the computer went to sleep, whether closing a laptop lid triggered sleep, and whether the sleep timeout differs on battery and plugged-in power. Windows can turn off the display without putting the PC to sleep, so check those settings separately. If the PC stayed awake, investigate the network and YouTube playback quality instead: sleep is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every interruption.
Check whether Windows is sleeping or only turning off the display
A dark screen does not by itself mean the computer slept. Windows has separate controls for turning off the display and putting the device to sleep. Lengthening the sleep timeout while leaving a shorter screen-off timeout can help establish whether sleep is causing the stream to stop.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Review the sleep timeout for both plugged-in and battery use, where both options are available. Compare it with the time the stream usually stops.
- Check Turn my screen off after separately from Make my device sleep after. A display can turn off while the PC remains awake.
Windows 11 also offers power modes at Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. If useful, compare Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance as a controlled troubleshooting step. Microsoft says Best power efficiency limits background activity to reduce power use and Best performance maximizes performance; availability depends on the device. Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Check the separate sleep timeouts under On battery and When plugged in, if shown.
- On PCs that expose it, review When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network. Its availability depends on hardware and the manufacturer.

Check laptop lid behavior and power source
If the stream stops when you close the lid
Test with the lid open. Many laptops are configured to sleep when the lid closes. To inspect the setting in Windows 10, open Additional power settings > Choose what closing the lid does. The exact controls and paths can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft: Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC
If it happens only on battery or only when plugged in
Compare the sleep timeout for the power state in use, then repeat the stream with the other power source if practical. A difference between battery and plugged-in behavior points toward a power setting worth checking; it does not, on its own, prove the cause is a network fault.

On supported Modern Standby devices, Windows may quiesce network activity during sleep and restore connectivity on resume. As Microsoft’s documentation puts it: “Otherwise the system will quiesce network activity during sleep, while providing instant connectivity upon resume.” This behavior applies to devices that support Modern Standby; it is not a description of every Windows PC. If the PC stayed awake, check YouTube and the connection

- Check the internet connection and whether other apps or websites also lose access.
- Try another playback quality in the YouTube player.
- Compare another YouTube stream or test playback on another device.
- Note whether the problem affects one stream or YouTube playback more broadly.
If several apps and sites disconnect, investigate the broader connection. If only one stream is affected, compare another stream, quality, or device before attributing it to Windows. YouTube cautions that “Network congestion and other factors may also cause live programming issues, which can delay the stream.” YouTube Help: Troubleshoot video streaming issues
Use the pattern of failure to narrow down the cause

Settings that are not universal fixes
Do not assume every interruption calls for disabling network-adapter power management. Adapter features vary by hardware and driver; Microsoft documents controls such as device sleep on disconnect and selective suspend as adapter capabilities, not as a universal YouTube fix. Investigate adapter-specific settings only when the symptoms point in that direction and the relevant option is actually present. Microsoft Learn: Power management for network devices
