YouTube RTMP 404 Error in OBS: How to Verify the Ingest Address

An OBS RTMP 404 does not identify one confirmed cause. Compare the server URL, stream key and protocol with the settings for the same broadcast in YouTube Studio, then check Live Control Room status.

If OBS reports an RTMP 404 while connecting to YouTube, first compare OBS’s server address and stream key with the settings for the same broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check that you have selected the intended protocol, then look at YouTube’s incoming preview and error messages. YouTube’s help pages do not define “RTMP 404” as one specific diagnosis, so the code alone does not establish what went wrong.

Check the address and key for the correct stream

  1. Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. Go to the Live Control Room for the scheduled or current stream you want to start, then open its stream settings. Use the values shown for that broadcast, not an address or key copied from an unrelated stream. YouTube’s live stream settings explain where to find the Stream URL and key.
  2. Compare the server address in OBS with YouTube’s Stream URL. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and inspect the server or URL field. It should match the Stream URL displayed in the selected stream’s Live Control Room. YouTube describes this URL as the destination that tells the encoder where to send the stream feed. Its encoder setup instructions say to copy the URL into the encoder’s server setting.
  3. Compare the separate stream key. In the same OBS settings, check the key against the one shown for that broadcast in YouTube Studio. The address and key are separate settings; verify both belong to the same intended stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover entering the stream key separately.
  4. Confirm RTMP or RTMPS is configured consistently. If you intend to use RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL revealed by the lock control beside Stream URL in Live Control Room, and ensure OBS is configured for that protocol. YouTube says both the protocol and server should be RTMPS. If the URL is correct but an SSL error persists, YouTube suggests trying port 443. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  5. Start OBS and check YouTube’s incoming status. Watch the Live Control Room for an incoming preview and any health or error messages. YouTube’s live dashboard checks for stream errors and displays messages that can guide the next troubleshooting step. See Live streaming error messages.

Make sure the protocol matches the URL

RTMP, RTMPS and HLS are not interchangeable settings. Use the URL generated for the protocol you selected in YouTube Studio and supported by your encoder.

  • RTMP: Use the Stream URL intended for RTMP in the encoder’s server field.
  • RTMPS: Retrieve the RTMPS address using the lock control beside Stream URL, then configure the encoder for RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe this setup.
  • HLS: Do not paste an HLS address into an RTMP or RTMPS configuration. HLS is a separate setup: select HLS as the stream protocol and use the generated HTTPS URL, with an encoder that supports it. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

If the settings match but OBS still cannot connect

Refresh the key only when needed

If you suspect the key is no longer current or YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting points you toward a new one, generate a new key in Live Control Room and update the key in OBS. A refreshed key is a documented troubleshooting step; it does not prove that every RTMP 404 is caused by a bad key. YouTube explains key reset and encoder troubleshooting in Manage live stream settings and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Use the exact message to choose the next check

Read the error shown in OBS and any status message or health warning in Live Control Room. The official YouTube documentation establishes that the encoder needs the correct Stream URL and key, that RTMPS has its own URL and protocol setup, and that the dashboard displays stream errors. It does not establish a unique cause or special YouTube fix for an OBS “RTMP 404” message. Avoid treating the code alone as proof of a bad key, account issue or particular endpoint problem.
