YouTube Stream Drops Frames on Ethernet: Test Packet Loss and Upload Limits

Ethernet does not rule out upload limits or an unstable route to YouTube. Learn how to distinguish encoder problems, test capacity and reduce stream demand.

A wired Ethernet connection rules out Wi-Fi interference on the computer’s local link, but it does not guarantee a stable stream. Dropped frames can mean your upload cannot sustain the configured bitrate, there is congestion or a fault on the local network, or the route to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable. Start by checking whether the problem is in the video encoder or the network, then compare sustained upload capacity with your stream’s total bitrate and test the connection during a representative stream.

First determine what is dropping frames

In OBS, network-dropped frames point to trouble maintaining the connection to the selected remote server or sustaining the configured bitrate. OBS’s indicator is not a measured packet-loss percentage: it tells you there is a network or bitrate problem, not how many packets were lost. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the distinction.

A choppy picture or bad audio does not by itself prove a network fault. YouTube advises checking the encoder, stream-health errors, CPU load, and a local recording as well as the connection. If the local recording is already choppy or the encoder reports errors, investigate the source or encoding workload first. If the encoder output and local recording look and sound healthy but YouTube is not receiving the feed reliably, focus on the outbound connection. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Compare upload capacity with your stream bitrate

Use upload speed, not download speed, for this comparison. Upload capacity is often lower than download capacity, and other people or devices sharing the connection can leave less bandwidth for the encoder. YouTube says, “The total bitrate of your stream cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available,” and recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity. Treat that spare capacity as headroom for a more reliable stream, not as a guarantee against route instability. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run an upload test while the problem is occurring, if practical, and compare its sustained result with the stream’s total outbound bitrate. A single speed-test result cannot prove that the route to YouTube is stable or that packet loss is absent. Stream health during a representative test stream and OBS’s network-dropped-frame status provide useful evidence alongside the upload test.

Choose bitrate for the codec and output you actually use

YouTube’s recommended rates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 recommendations below are from YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked on October 3, 2026; the page is undated, so these are not a guarantee that the table will never change.

Codec Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
H.264 720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
H.264 720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are not universal targets: YouTube’s recommended AV1 and H.265 rates differ. Check the relevant codec row in YouTube’s encoder settings table rather than applying an H.264 value to another codec. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds; its live encoder settings cover those settings.

Test systematically before changing your setup

  1. Run a representative test stream. Before the public event, include movement and audio similar to the real show. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and OBS’s network-dropped-frame status. Note the time, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether other users or devices are uploading. YouTube recommends pretesting and monitoring stream health; recording these details makes repeat runs easier to compare. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  2. Separate encoder trouble from network trouble. Check the encoder’s errors, CPU load, sources, and local recording. If those show a problem, address the source or encoding issue; if they are healthy while delivery to YouTube falters, proceed with network tests. YouTube describes these checks in its troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Check upload capacity and shared use. Compare a current upload test with the stream’s total bitrate, allowing the 20% spare capacity YouTube recommends. Consider uploads from other users and devices. A brief peak speed is less useful than a connection that remains adequate during a representative stream.
  4. Lower demand one change at a time. Choose the bitrate for the current codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s table. If upload capacity is too close to or below the configured bitrate, lower the bitrate; if needed, reduce resolution or frame rate as well. Retest after each change so you can tell whether it helped.
  5. Check the local Ethernet path. Inspect the cable connectors and link status. If available, try a known-good cable and a different router or switch port, changing one item at a time. These are controlled checks, not guaranteed fixes; they can help identify a local-link fault but cannot test the route beyond your local network. YouTube refers to unplugging the primary encoder’s Ethernet cable in its specific backup-encoder failover test, not as a general cure for dropped frames.
  6. Escalate with useful evidence. If outbound-connection tests show problems, YouTube advises contacting your ISP. If symptoms persist on a particular ingest route, keep the timestamps and encoder logs for support. Do not label the cause packet loss unless you have a measurement that establishes packet loss.

When dynamic bitrate helps—and what it costs

OBS can lower bitrate dynamically during congestion to help manage dropped frames. That may help the stream continue through changing conditions, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and reduces video quality while the bitrate is lower. Use it as a resilience measure, not as evidence that the upload route has been repaired. See OBS’s troubleshooting guidance.
