YouTube Live Bitrate for 720p Devotional Videos on a 5 Mbps Upload Connection

YouTube’s recommended 720p live bitrate exceeds a 5 Mbps upload rating. Learn a cautious H.264 starting bitrate and the settings to test before going live.

Yes, a 5 Mbps upload connection can stream 720p to YouTube Live, but the connection rating alone does not guarantee a stable broadcast. YouTube’s listed 720p live recommendation is 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265—both above 5 Mbps. Test your actual upload capacity; if you use H.264, 3 Mbps is YouTube’s listed minimum and a cautious starting point on a tested 5 Mbps connection.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

YouTube’s live encoder settings distinguish recommended bitrates from minimums. At 720p, its current table lists the same targets for 30 and 60 frames per second:

Codec YouTube’s recommended 720p live bitrate YouTube’s listed minimum
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 6 Mbps 2 Mbps
H.264 8 Mbps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube-published live-stream settings, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain them. A connection advertised or measured as 5 Mbps upload falls short of either recommended target. YouTube advises testing the upload bitrate; actual capacity can vary, and other network activity can compete with the encoder.

A practical starting point for H.264

First test the connection you will use for the broadcast. If H.264 is your encoder codec and the test confirms a stable 5 Mbps upload, try 3 Mbps video bitrate as a cautious starting point. That is YouTube’s listed 720p H.264 minimum, not its recommended quality target. Increase it only if testing shows the connection has reliable headroom. Do not set the encoder to 5 Mbps simply because the connection is called “5 Mbps.”

Choose 30 fps unless the picture needs 60

For a mostly static devotional recording or camera view, 1280Ă—720 at 30 fps is a reasonable starting choice; this is a practical inference, not a YouTube rule for devotional content. Use 60 fps when the movement benefits from it. YouTube lists the same 720p bitrate recommendations at 30 and 60 fps, so reducing frame rate does not change the published target, though it can be an appropriate choice for content with little motion.

Set up the encoder and YouTube stream

  1. Test the upload connection. Run a speed test on the network and device you will actually use. Avoid relying on the plan’s advertised speed; leave capacity for fluctuations and other network use.
  2. Set resolution and frame rate. Start with 1280Ă—720 at 30 fps for a largely static devotional scene. Choose 60 fps only if the movement warrants it.
  3. Choose the video codec and bitrate. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. For H.264 on a verified 5 Mbps upload, begin at 3 Mbps and raise it only after a stable test. The YouTube-recommended 720p live target is 8 Mbps for H.264; the 6 Mbps AV1/H.265 target is also above a 5 Mbps connection rating.
  4. Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube specifies CBR for live encoder settings.
  5. Set keyframes. Use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
  6. Use RTMPS transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the stream connection.
  7. Configure audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo in its advanced settings. Confirm the audio is clear and synchronized before going live.
  8. Connect the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream, copy its stream key into the encoder’s stream settings, and start the encoder. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  9. Test and monitor. Before the event, run a test using representative audio and movement. Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder for dropped frames or connection instability, then adjust bitrate downward if the connection cannot sustain it.

Latency: prioritize reliable playback when interaction is limited

If viewers mainly watch a devotional video and you are not responding to chat in real time, minimizing delay may not be important. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose a latency setting based on whether live interaction matters; for a broadcast with little interaction, stable playback may be the more useful priority.

Do not confuse livestream settings with upload settings

YouTube’s separate file-upload encoding guidance gives 5 Mbps for 720p SDR video at standard frame rates (24–30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates (48–60 fps). Those figures apply to uploaded video files, not live encoder ingestion. For a livestream, use the live table: at 720p it lists 6 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264, for either 30 or 60 fps.

Troubleshoot an unstable 720p broadcast

  • Stream health reports connection problems or frames are dropping: lower the video bitrate and test again. A nominal 5 Mbps connection may not sustain that rate continuously, especially if other devices or applications are using the network.
  • The encoder is set to the YouTube recommendation but cannot hold it: the 720p recommended target exceeds a 5 Mbps upload rating for both codec groups. Use a lower rate that testing shows is stable rather than forcing the recommended number.
  • You used the 720p upload-file bitrate as a live setting: check that you are reading YouTube’s live encoder table, not its upload encoding page. The two tables describe different workflows.
  • Playback buffers despite a healthy connection: if you selected lower latency, consider a less aggressive latency setting. YouTube cautions that lower latency can increase buffering.
  • Viewers cannot hear clearly or audio is out of sync: check the encoder’s audio codec and bitrate, verify the stereo setting if applicable, and test with the same audio source before the broadcast.
  • The wrong broadcast appears on the channel: check that the encoder has the stream key for the intended YouTube Studio event. Do not share the key publicly; replace it through YouTube Studio if it has been exposed.
