YouTube Live 1080p vs. 720p: Bitrate for a Text-Heavy Playlist

For small text, 1080p is the stronger starting point if your upload can sustain the correct bitrate with headroom. Compare YouTube Live targets for 1080p and 720p by codec and frame rate.

For a text-heavy YouTube Live playlist, start at 1080p if your connection can reliably sustain the required bitrate with headroom. At 30 fps, YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p and 8 Mbps for 720p; with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, it is 10 Mbps and 6 Mbps. The higher resolution preserves more source detail for small text, but that legibility advice is a practical inference—not a YouTube-published test of text-heavy playlists. If your upload is limited or unstable, 720p with clear, sufficiently large text is a safer choice than an unreliable 1080p stream.

1080p or 720p: which should you choose?

Choose 1080p when viewers need to read small interface labels, playlist titles, or fine typography and your upload connection can sustain the bitrate for your codec and frame rate. It provides more source pixels than 720p, giving fine text more detail to work with.

Choose 720p when the text is large and high-contrast enough at the player size your viewers are likely to use, or when your connection cannot reliably support 1080p plus network headroom. A stable 720p stream is preferable to a 1080p stream that struggles to send its data.

This is a practical resolution-based inference, not a result from a YouTube study comparing text-heavy playlists. Readability also depends on text size, contrast, layout, player size, and viewer playback conditions. YouTube’s live guidance does not specify a minimum font size or promise that every viewer receives the stream at its ingest resolution.

YouTube Live bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube’s recommended live-stream ingest targets, verified against its current encoder guidance in 2026. The appropriate figure depends on the codec actually sent by your encoder, the resolution, and the frame rate; these are recommendations, not universal minimum bitrates for readable text.

Source setting AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

For example, if you send H.264 at 1080p30, use 14 Mbps as the recommended target; at H.264 720p30, use 8 Mbps. At 60 fps, the recommended H.264 target rises to 17 Mbps for 1080p, while 720p remains 8 Mbps. With AV1 or H.265/HEVC, the corresponding recommended targets are 10 and 6 Mbps at 30 fps, and 12 and 6 Mbps at 60 fps. Confirm the codec your encoder is actually using rather than assuming it from the resolution setting.

Leave room for network variation

YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below the available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Shared network use can reduce the upload capacity available to your stream, so do not treat a speed test’s peak result as fully available for streaming.

  • Check upload speed under conditions similar to the planned broadcast.
  • Allow at least the recommended 20% beyond your total streaming bitrate, and account for other devices or streams using the connection.
  • If the connection cannot reliably carry the selected target with that room, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than pushing an unstable stream.

YouTube’s bitrate, bandwidth, and network-stability guidance is at YouTube streaming tips.

Set the encoder for a clear, stable stream

For the bitrate comparison to apply, match your encoder’s output to the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations call for constant bitrate (CBR), support up to 60 fps, and recommend a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube says it detects encoder settings, but you should still verify the selected settings and test before the event.

  • Resolution: Set 1920 Ă— 1080 for 1080p or 1280 Ă— 720 for 720p.
  • Frame rate: Choose 30 fps unless your content’s motion or production needs justify 60 fps and your upload can carry its higher target where applicable.
  • Bitrate: Use the recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in the table above; select CBR.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Codec: Verify whether the encoder sends H.264, AV1, or H.265/HEVC, then use the corresponding bitrate column.

Test the playlist before going live

  1. Choose the intended settings. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, bitrate, and keyframe interval in the encoder. Confirm what it is actually sending.
  2. Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and leave 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. Consider other traffic on the same network.
  3. Preview the real layout. Inspect the smallest important text in the live preview and at approximately the player size your audience will use. This text-specific check applies YouTube’s general preview/testing advice to your playlist; it is not an official minimum-font-size protocol.
  4. Test representative content. Include the audio and movement viewers will encounter, not just a static opening screen.
  5. Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast and respond to warnings rather than assuming the preview guarantees a stable live stream.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Consequently, an ingest resolution is not a guarantee that every viewer will watch at that resolution. Testing and stream-health advice is covered in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Do not confuse live bitrate with upload bitrate

Uploading a finished video and sending a live stream are different workflows. YouTube’s separate SDR upload encoding guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates; for 720p it recommends 5 Mbps and 7.5 Mbps, respectively. Those are upload recommendations, not live ingest targets. For this decision, use the live-stream table above. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

Troubleshoot a text-heavy live stream

The text looks soft or hard to read

  • Check whether the source is 720p and whether small text is being scaled down in the layout. Try a 1080p source if your connection can sustain its recommended target with headroom.
  • Increase text size or contrast and simplify crowded layouts; resolution alone cannot fix text that is too small at the viewer’s player size.
  • Inspect YouTube’s preview and the smallest important labels before the event, rather than judging only from the full-size editing canvas.

The stream buffers or its health worsens

  • Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and restore the recommended 20% headroom.
  • Check whether other users, devices, or streams are consuming upload bandwidth.
  • Reduce resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the selected setting reliably. Recheck the codec-specific bitrate target after changing settings.

The encoder settings do not match the target

  • Verify actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, and keyframe interval in the encoder and YouTube preview.
  • Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec that is actually being sent; 1080p does not have one universal target across codecs and frame rates.
