Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A UPS can keep a local YouTube radio setup running through a short power cut, but only if it powers the entire chain: encoder, modem, router and any essential audio or network equipment. For stronger resilience, combine backup power with a separately tested backup encoder and, if fixed internet may fail, an independently powered cellular connection. Each protects against a different failure; none guarantees that a YouTube live session will continue unchanged.
What has to stay online
A YouTube encoder sends the stream over the internet to YouTube. That means a power cut can interrupt either the encoding equipment or the connection—or both. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a Live server URL and stream key configured in the encoder (YouTube’s encoder streaming guide).
Make an inventory before choosing a backup. Include the streaming computer or hardware encoder, audio interface if used, modem, router, and any network switch needed to reach the internet. A backup for only one component may not keep the full path working.
Choose the protection that matches the failure
| Option | What it can cover | What it does not solve by itself |
|---|---|---|
| UPS for the local chain | Temporary loss of mains power for the devices plugged into it, subject to the UPS capacity, attached load and battery condition. | A failed encoder, a fixed-internet outage, or equipment not connected to the UPS. |
| UPS plus an independent backup encoder | Local power loss for protected equipment and, if properly configured, failure of the primary encoder. | A shared internet outage or power/network path that also disables the backup. |
| Cellular internet backup | Some fixed-network outages, where cellular coverage is available and the cellular equipment and encoder remain powered. | A power cut that stops the encoder or networking equipment; cellular coverage is not universal. |
| StreamNeo cloud streaming | Uploaded videos can keep looping to YouTube from the cloud, without a home computer or home connection staying on. | It plays uploaded videos, not a live microphone or camera feed. |
The UPS and failover options above address different failure points. YouTube advises creators to test whether the viewer-facing player switches to a backup encoder, rather than assuming that configuring a backup is enough (YouTube live stream tips).

Set up a UPS for the whole local chain
- List the equipment the stream needs. Identify the encoder or computer, modem, router, audio interface and network switch, if present. Decide which are essential for continuing the broadcast.
- Check the actual load. Use the equipment’s power information or a suitable meter to determine the combined draw of the devices you intend to protect. Choose a UPS with compatible output, enough capacity for that load, and outlets that match your plugs.
- Connect every essential device. Put the encoder and networking equipment on battery-backed outlets, not just surge-protection outlets. Keep nonessential devices off the battery outlets if they would reduce the available runtime.
- Check the battery and test the arrangement. A UPS provides temporary backup power, but runtime depends on the particular unit, load and battery condition. No fixed runtime can be promised without those details. Test the UPS safely and verify that the encoder and network stay operational.
A UPS manufacturer’s manual describes backup power during an outage, but that does not establish how long a particular streaming setup will run (APC Back-UPS manual). Treat the expected runtime as a setup-specific figure, not a general property of “a UPS.”
Configure and test encoder failover
- Prepare the primary stream. In the encoder, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key for the intended broadcast. Confirm that the stream appears in Live Control Room preview before relying on it.
- Configure a real backup encoder. A backup must be ready to send the stream and must not depend on the same failed component or route if it is meant to cover that failure. For example, a second encoder on the same unprotected computer power and the same failed network path is not independent protection.
- Test the rollover before an outage. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup encoder. Watch the viewer-facing player; a dashboard status alone does not show what viewers experience.
- Test power protection separately. A successful encoder failover test does not prove the UPS will power the entire chain. Simulate the power-cut scenario safely and check what the audience sees.
YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, and testing failover. Its guidance does not establish a fixed period for which a live stream remains open after an encoder stops. Do not plan around an assumed grace period.

Keep internet failure separate from power failure
If the encoder appears healthy but the stream is failing, check outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends testing internet connection strength and contacting the internet service provider if there is a connection problem (YouTube live stream tips).
A mobile hotspot or cellular router can be a fallback for some fixed-internet outages, but only if coverage is available where the equipment is located. It also needs power, and the encoder and other required local equipment still have to be running. Cellular backup is therefore not a substitute for a UPS.

What to check when a cut interrupts the broadcast
- The encoder stopped. Check whether the computer or encoder lost power, restarted, or needs the stream restarted. A UPS connected only to the computer may leave the modem or router without power.
- The encoder is running, but viewers cannot receive the stream. Check the modem, router and outbound internet connection. If the fixed connection is down, use a cellular fallback only if it is available, powered and configured.
- The primary stopped and the backup did not take over. Check the backup encoder’s readiness and independence, then repeat YouTube’s recommended failover test and observe the player.
- The stream is no longer live after service returns. Inspect Live Control Room and the encoder before assuming the broadcast resumed. YouTube advises monitoring streams continuously and verifying local archive files; it does not promise that a particular outage duration preserves the same live session.
A viewer’s report that a power cut ended a stream and a later OBS start created a new video is anecdotal, not a rule for every channel or outage (Reddit post). Check your own Live Control Room and recording rather than inferring session behavior from one report.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist in StreamNeo.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
For a radio-style channel built from recordings, this avoids relying on a powered home encoder. Each slot streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera or microphone feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
