For YouTube Live at 60 fps, target a keyframe every 2 seconds: that is 120 frames. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder, -g 120 sets a maximum GOP of 120 frames; -keyint_min 120 and -sc_threshold 0 can help keep the cadence regular. YouTube also says a closed GOP is needed for optimal transcoding, so verify the behavior of the encoder you actually use.

Why the 60fps setting is 120 frames

YouTube specifies its keyframe frequency in seconds, while FFmpeg’s libx264 -g option expresses a maximum GOP size in frames. At a constant output rate of 60 frames per second, two seconds is 120 frames; YouTube’s four-second upper limit is 240 frames. The target is 120, not 60: 60 frames at 60 fps represents one second.

YouTube’s guidance is to aim for two seconds, not merely to stay below four. These recommendations are in YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set a two-second GOP with FFmpeg libx264

For a known, constant 60 fps output encoded with libx264, use this as the GOP-related starting point:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0 ... OUTPUT

-g 120 sets the maximum GOP size to 120 frames. The libx264 wrapper’s keyint_min and sc_threshold options can help maintain a regular cadence: the minimum interval discourages earlier keyframes, while disabling scene-cut insertion helps prevent scene changes from disturbing the schedule. FFmpeg documents these controls in its codec documentation.

This is not a complete YouTube streaming command. The ellipsis represents other choices you must configure for your workflow, including output destination, rate control, audio, and pixel format. No particular command or stream is established as tested here. Confirm that the command selects libx264 and that your FFmpeg build accepts the options.

Account for closed GOP and actual output cadence

YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says, “YouTube’s pipeline requires a Closed GOP for optimal transcoding.” See its live streaming error messages. GOP length and GOP structure are distinct: setting a 120-frame maximum does not, by itself, prove that the encoder is producing a closed GOP. Encoder options and their meanings vary, so check the documentation for the encoder selected in your build and inspect the resulting stream.

  • The 120-frame conversion assumes the output is actually constant 60 fps. Variable-frame-rate input, dropped frames, resampling, or a different output rate can change how frame counts line up with timestamps.
  • Do not assume a hardware encoder or another codec uses the same flags as libx264. Check its FFmpeg options and confirm closed-GOP behavior rather than transferring these settings blindly.
  • YouTube notes that ingest errors can cause incorrectly reported GOP sizes. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and test with representative motion and audio, as YouTube advises.

Use a time-based keyframe alternative when appropriate

FFmpeg also supports forcing keyframes by timestamp. A two-second expression is:

-force_key_frames 'expr:gte(t,n_forced*2)'

This asks FFmpeg to force keyframes on a two-second time cadence. The result depends on frame timestamps and encoder time base: FFmpeg rounds the requested time to an output timestamp and uses the first frame at or after the computed time. This is an alternative control, not proof of a fixed GOP throughout the stream or of closed-GOP structure. See FFmpeg’s documentation for -force_key_frames, then inspect the output.

Keep keyframes separate from the other YouTube ingest settings

Keyframe interval is only one part of the ingest configuration. YouTube’s published guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends RTMPS. Its advanced settings include progressive scan and two B-frames. For H.264, the recommended bitrates at 60 fps are 17 Mbps for 1080p, 34 Mbps for 1440p, and 50 Mbps for 2160p. Select bitrate for the resolution and codec you are sending; changing it does not replace the two-second keyframe target. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the full requirements.

Troubleshoot a GOP or keyframe warning

  • Reported interval is one second: at 60 fps, check whether the GOP is set to 60 rather than 120. Two seconds at this output rate is 120 frames.
  • Keyframes appear at irregular intervals: confirm the actual output frame rate, the selected encoder, and whether scene-cut insertion or timestamp variation affects cadence. With libx264, review -g, -keyint_min, and -sc_threshold together.
  • YouTube flags GOP size despite the intended setting: inspect the encoded output and Live Control Room stream health; YouTube cautions that ingest errors can lead to incorrect reported GOP sizes.
  • GOP size is right but transcoding is not optimal: check closed-GOP behavior separately. A correct interval alone does not establish that the GOP is closed.
  • Using forced keyframes: account for output timestamps and encoder time base, then inspect where keyframes actually land. The expression does not guarantee closed-GOP behavior.
