To stream a community radio station’s live program from a Linux server, route the station’s audio into an encoder, create a YouTube live event, and send the encoded feed to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and private stream key. OBS Studio is one documented Linux option if the server has a supported graphics environment; before choosing it, verify that the station’s audio output can actually reach the server. Test the complete chain before going on air, and confirm that the station has the rights needed for a YouTube simulcast.

Before you configure the Linux server

Check that the YouTube channel can go live

Use the channel that will host the broadcast. YouTube says a verified channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before the day of the program; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Confirm the station’s YouTube rights

Do not assume that permission to broadcast terrestrial radio also covers a YouTube simulcast. Confirm the station’s rights for the music, performances, recordings, artwork, and relevant territories before streaming. Requirements depend on the station’s agreements and the content; the setup steps below do not establish that the station is licensed to stream it online.

Map the audio route first

An encoder does not capture the station’s program simply because you have entered YouTube’s destination. Identify the actual program output on the station mixer or automation system, the input or capture device available to the Linux host, and how the operating system exposes that input to the encoder. Those details depend on the station’s equipment and server. Verify them locally rather than relying on a generic cable, interface, or command.

Choose an encoder the server can run

OBS Studio on Linux

OBS Studio is a documented option when the Linux server has a usable graphical environment. OBS Project recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and documents an Ubuntu installation path at its Linux installation page. Its listed Linux/Unix requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics device and X11 or Wayland; see OBS system requirements.

Check the actual server before installing or planning an unattended broadcast. A minimal headless VPS may not provide the graphics or display session OBS expects. Also check hardware-encoding support, CPU capacity, and whether the system can stay running reliably for the intended schedule. The available documentation establishes OBS as a Linux option, but does not establish that it will work on every headless server or determine whether OBS or FFmpeg is the better fit for this station.

Build a simple visual for an audio-first program

If the broadcast is primarily radio audio, the encoder still needs a video picture for a conventional YouTube live stream. A station logo, an “on air” graphic, or a schedule image can provide the visual. Use artwork the station has permission to display, and make sure the resulting scene actually includes the captured program audio.

Create the YouTube live event and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a live event. Set its title, visibility, and intended start time, then choose the event’s stream settings. YouTube’s walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. In OBS, open the stream settings, choose YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and key in the corresponding fields. Labels can vary with encoder version.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address for the encoder. Do not post it in a public script, screenshot, or shared configuration repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the event. Confirm that the video is present and the correct station program is audible; an encoder showing “live” locally does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended feed.
  5. When the program ends, stop the YouTube event and encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but an archive is not a substitute for a station-controlled local recording.

Set a compatible video and audio output

YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-compatible ingestion. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Use settings supported by both the encoder and YouTube ingest; do not treat a codec-specific bitrate as universal.

A sensible starting point for an audio-led station

A static or lightly animated station image generally does not need a high frame rate or resolution. If the server and connection can sustain it, 720p at 30 fps is a reasonable starting point to test. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended. Those figures are for that resolution, frame rate, and codec—not a blanket bitrate recommendation for HEVC or AV1, whose guidance uses different values.

Audio level, sample rate, and bitrate

YouTube’s advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 kbps for stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not evidence that the station’s source runs at 44.1 kHz or that converting it will improve sound. Test the real output for clipping, channel balance, unwanted silence, and correct program selection. Preserve the source quality where practical and avoid adding processing that has not been checked on the actual chain.

Keep bitrate inside sustained upload capacity

YouTube says the total bitrate sent cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. It recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and notes that other users on a shared network can reduce what is available to the stream. Prefer a stable wired connection when the server needs one, but a cable alone cannot guarantee adequate bandwidth or a reliable ISP connection. More guidance is available in YouTube’s streaming tips.

When HLS is relevant

HLS is a separate YouTube ingest option for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It uses HTTPS and has segment and playlist requirements; YouTube notes that its segment-based delivery has higher latency than RTMP. It is not the default choice for the straightforward radio relay described here. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Rehearse before the broadcast

  1. Test with representative content. YouTube recommends rehearsing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Check the station’s full audio route and the actual encoder scene, not just a test tone or a silent preview.
  2. Start the encoder early. YouTube advises starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before going live.
  3. Verify the viewer experience. Confirm the watch page is accessible at the intended visibility and that audio and picture are synchronized and intelligible from a listener’s device.
  4. Monitor during the program. Watch the encoder and Live Control Room for audio/video interruptions, dropped connection, or stream-health warnings. Arrange for someone to monitor the stream if the server is unattended.
  5. Test failover if you have a backup encoder. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player switches to the backup. Do this during a rehearsal, not during the program.
  6. Check any local recording separately. If the station records the program locally, confirm that the file grows during capture and is playable afterward. Do not treat YouTube’s archive behavior as proof that a local copy exists.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Confirm the event is the intended one, the encoder has the correct stream URL and key, and the channel has live streaming enabled. Check network access and the encoder’s connection status. If the key may have been exposed or is incorrect, reset or recopy it in Live Control Room.
Preview appears, but there is no station audio Check that the intended mixer or automation output reaches the Linux capture device, that the encoder is using that device, and that its input meter moves during the program. Confirm the source is not muted and that the scene includes the audio source.
Audio is distorted, too quiet, or only on one channel Check source and encoder levels for clipping, confirm left/right routing and stereo configuration, and listen to the YouTube preview. Compare the encoder’s audio format and settings with YouTube’s recommendations without assuming that a sample-rate conversion will fix a routing or level problem.
Stream health reports instability or the stream drops Compare the total outgoing bitrate with sustained upload capacity, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, and check whether other users or services are consuming the connection. Test the server and network under realistic conditions; reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
OBS will not start or is unsuitable on the server Check the Linux graphics requirement and whether an X11 or Wayland session is available. A minimal headless machine may not meet OBS’s documented requirements. Confirm server capabilities before selecting a different encoder or deployment design.
Viewers cannot open the watch page Check the event’s visibility and scheduled status, then test the viewer-facing page from a separate account or device. Do not use the encoder’s local status as the only check that the event is accessible.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a live mixer-input relay and does not go live from a camera. If the station’s use case is suitable for a pre-recorded program or playlist, the process is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
