How to Make a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist Use Less Bandwidth on a VPS

The right way to reduce VPS bandwidth depends on whether it uploads a stream, packages HLS for YouTube, or relays playback. For a single 4K60 ingest stream, codec and bitrate are the key levers.

First identify what the VPS is doing. If it sends one encoded 4K60 stream to YouTube, reduce outbound traffic by choosing an efficient supported codec, testing a lower bitrate, or lowering resolution or frame rate. YouTube’s current recommended 4K60 rates are 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264; these are starting points, not guarantees of image quality or a specific VPS data bill. If the VPS instead relays or serves playback to viewers, its traffic has a different shape and the same figures do not size that workload.

Identify which traffic you want to reduce

“Playlist” can mean source videos queued on the VPS, an HLS media playlist sent to YouTube, or a YouTube playback playlist being relayed to viewers. Map the actual path before changing settings:

  • Source files → encoder on VPS → YouTube ingest: the VPS uploads the encoded live feed. Its sustained outbound rate is principally determined by the feed’s bitrate.
  • Source files → HLS packaging on VPS → YouTube ingest: the VPS sends an HLS media playlist and its media segments. YouTube’s HLS requirements apply.
  • YouTube playback → proxy on VPS → viewers: the VPS downloads and redistributes playback. YouTube’s ingest bitrate table does not establish the proxy’s total traffic, capacity needs, or legality. Measure this workflow separately.

YouTube says it transcodes a live input into multiple output formats for viewers. If your VPS sends one source stream to YouTube, you do not need to upload a separate rendition for each viewer resolution. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation likewise supports one encoded stream and ignores master playlists: YouTube live encoder settings and YouTube HLS ingestion requirements.

Choose a bitrate for the codec and quality you need

YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these minimum and recommended input rates. They describe encoder guidance, not a tested result for your video or VPS.

Resolution and frame rate Codec Minimum input bitrate Recommended input bitrate
2160p (4K) at 60fps AV1 or HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60fps H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
1440p at 60fps AV1 or HEVC not stated (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) 24 Mbps
1440p at 60fps H.264 not stated (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) 34 Mbps
1080p at 60fps AV1 or HEVC not stated (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) 12 Mbps
1080p at 60fps H.264 not stated (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) 17 Mbps

To retain 4K60 while reducing upload traffic, test an encoder setting below the recommended rate and check both YouTube stream health and the actual picture. Fast motion, fine detail, noise, and scene changes can expose compression artifacts sooner than static footage. Do not assume the listed minimum will preserve acceptable quality for every source. Leave enough network capacity for observed variability; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universal VPS headroom percentage.

Prefer an efficient codec only when your path supports it

YouTube’s general live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 with RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60fps. Its HLS ingestion guide specifies H.264 or HEVC; do not assume AV1 is accepted over HLS just because it appears in the general encoder settings. YouTube’s HLS documentation says HEVC generally yields 25% to 50% more data compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That is YouTube’s stated general comparison, not a measurement of your encoder, content, or VPS.

For whichever protocol you use, confirm that the encoder and YouTube ingest endpoint accept the selected codec. A codec that reduces bitrate is useful only if it works reliably through your chosen path and the resulting image is acceptable.

Trade resolution or frame rate if 4K60 is optional

If the source does not need 4K60, compare 1440p60 or 1080p60 against the viewing purpose and content. YouTube’s recommended input rates are lower at those settings, as shown above. Reducing frame rate may also reduce the amount of motion information to encode, but YouTube’s cited table does not quantify a particular saving for your video. Check the result with representative scenes rather than assuming a fixed percentage.

Configure the YouTube input correctly

For general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the protocol and codec combination supported by your ingest workflow, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while testing. The official encoder settings are at YouTube Help.

If the VPS sends HLS

YouTube’s HLS ingest guide specifies an HLS Media Playlist with media segments sent to its endpoint. It requires muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and a frame rate up to 60fps. It supports one encoded stream rather than a master playlist of quality variants.

  • Use media segments of 1–4 seconds as recommended; segments must not exceed five seconds.
  • Do not treat shorter segments as a bitrate-reduction technique. YouTube warns that they may reduce latency but increase rebuffer risk and lower encoding efficiency.
  • Follow the HLS guide’s playlist, segment, and endpoint requirements rather than applying RTMP settings blindly.

See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation. YouTube describes HLS and DASH as segment-based protocols that typically have higher latency than RTMP; its protocol comparison also lists the codecs for each protocol: ingestion protocol comparison.

Measure the VPS transfer during a representative stream

  1. Record the traffic direction. Check outbound and inbound bytes at the VPS network interface. For a VPS uploading to YouTube, outbound traffic is the main stream transfer; downloads of source files and system traffic are separate.
  2. Run a representative section. Include the most demanding motion and detail in the playlist, not only a static opening screen. A short test can miss differences across a long loop.
  3. Change one setting at a time. Compare codec, bitrate, or resolution/frame rate separately so you can see what affected transfer, stream health, and visible quality.
  4. Estimate sustained transfer from measured rate. A continuous stream at 1 Mbps transfers about 0.45 GB per hour using decimal units (1 Mbps Ă— 3,600 seconds Ă· 8 Ă· 1,000,000,000). Multiply your measured average rate by run time, then add any separately measured traffic. This estimate excludes provider-specific accounting rules and protocol overhead.
  5. Check the provider’s plan terms. VPS transfer quotas, egress billing, and measurement policies vary by provider and plan; there is no universal allowance or price established here.

Troubleshoot high traffic or an unstable stream

  • Outbound usage is higher than expected: verify the configured encoded bitrate and measure interface traffic during a steady run. Check whether the VPS is also uploading source files, backups, or another stream.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health after lowering bitrate: restore a stable setting and check available upload capacity, packet loss, and variability on the VPS connection. The encoder’s configured rate is not the only determinant of delivery reliability.
  • The image looks blocky or loses detail: raise bitrate, use a supported more efficient codec, or reduce resolution/frame rate. Recheck high-motion and detailed portions of the playlist.
  • HLS ingest is rejected: verify the M2TS container, muxed audio/video, AAC audio, H.264 or HEVC video, closed GOP, supported frame rate, and media-playlist structure. Do not send a master playlist expecting YouTube to select a variant.
  • HLS playback or latency is worse after changing segment length: use the documented 1–4 second recommendation and never exceed five seconds; shorter segments can raise rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without maintaining your own VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video rather than going live from a camera. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. You can review plans at StreamNeo pricing. Start your StreamNeo free day.
