If someone has your YouTube stream key, reset it in YouTube Studio, replace it in your authorized encoder, and stop any unauthorized feed you can access. If you suspect someone has taken over the channel or its Google Account, secure the account and review channel permissions as well. A stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send video to YouTube, so treat it like a password.
First, identify what is exposed
The right response depends on whether only the key has leaked, an unauthorized broadcast is currently live, or someone may also have access to the channel’s Google Account.
- Leaked key, no known active feed: reset the key and update every authorized encoder that uses it.
- Unauthorized broadcast is live: end the transmission through the available Live Control Room controls and stop the encoder sending it, if you control that encoder. Then reset the key.
- Possible account or channel takeover: secure the associated Google Account, address unwanted channel changes, and review who has channel access in addition to rotating the key.
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not post one in public, send it to someone who does not need it, or leave it visible in screenshots or recordings.
Reset the leaked key in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio for the affected channel and open the Live Control Room.
- Select Stream from the Live Control Room’s left menu.
- Find the Stream key section and select Reset beside the hidden key.
- Copy the replacement key and store it securely. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.
- Open the settings for each authorized encoder that should continue streaming to the channel. Replace the old key with the new one, and verify that the encoder is connected to the intended YouTube stream.
- Check any saved or reused stream configurations before starting another broadcast. YouTube’s Reuse settings option copies the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, so a reused setup may carry the old key forward.
YouTube’s general encoder setup puts the server URL and stream key in the encoder. Update the key there; rotating it in Studio does not update your encoder’s saved settings for you.

Stop a broadcast that is already live
Do not assume that resetting the key by itself will immediately end a feed already being sent. YouTube’s published instructions explain how to reset a key and how to end a stream, but do not specify how quickly a reset revokes an existing connection or promise that rotation alone cuts off a running broadcast.
- If you can access the active Live Control Room, use the available end-stream control for that broadcast.
- If you control the encoder sending the feed, stop its transmission too. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” For a scheduled stream, YouTube also documents an End Stream control in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the YouTube watch page is no longer live. If the unauthorized encoder is outside your control, use the available Live Control Room control and check the broadcast status rather than relying on key rotation as proof that it has stopped.
- Rotate the key and update your legitimate encoder using the steps above.
If the Google Account or channel may be compromised
YouTube’s guidance treats channel hacking as involving compromise of at least one associated Google Account. A leaked key alone does not establish that the account has been taken over; investigate further if you see unfamiliar account activity, channel changes you did not make, or access granted to unknown people.

- Recover and secure the associated Google Account, following Google’s account-recovery process if you can no longer sign in.
- Secure the Google Accounts of channel owners and managers as well if their access could be involved.
- Revert unwanted channel changes once you have regained control.
- In YouTube Studio, review Channel Permissions and remove accounts that are no longer authorized. Review Brand Account access where it applies to the channel.
- Do not share passwords or sign-in information as a substitute for granting the appropriate channel role.
If your streaming app signs in directly
The stream-key reset procedure applies when the encoder sends a feed using a YouTube stream key. If the streaming application authenticates through direct YouTube sign-in instead, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to contact that software provider; resetting a stream key does not address that sign-in method.
