There is no creator-side integrated loudness target in YouTube’s published live-encoder recommendations. In particular, the cited YouTube guidance does not require a live mix to be −14 LUFS. For an overnight yoga nidra stream, prepare a steady, comfortable program, prevent digital clipping, measure both integrated loudness and true peak, then test and monitor the actual stream.
What YouTube’s live audio recommendations specify
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance specifies audio encoding settings, not an integrated loudness target for your mix. For RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC or MP3 audio, with 44.1 kHz recommended for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. The listed bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are delivery-encoding settings; they do not tell you how loud to mix narration or ambience. YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Do not treat −14 LUFS, or another commonly repeated figure, as an official YouTube live requirement on the basis of this guidance. LUFS describes perceived programme loudness over time; the encoder settings describe how audio is delivered.
Peak level and perceived loudness are different
Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. Audio that reaches or exceeds that limit can clip and sound distorted. OBS’s guidance says stream output must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping, but an OBS mixer meter is peak-oriented: it can help reveal peaks, not tell you the integrated loudness of a complete yoga nidra programme. A stream can stay below clipping and still feel uneven. A quiet spoken passage may be hard to hear over a sound bed, while a louder word or a change of recording may startle someone listening at a low volume. For an overnight programme, assess the voice, ambience, pauses and transitions together rather than relying on a single peak reading.
A practical workflow for a consistent overnight mix
- Prepare the full programme. Use consistent source files and sample rates. Check the beginning and end of each recording, overlaps, silence, and the transition or loop point. Confirm that you have permission to use every narration, music track and ambient recording.
- Balance narration and ambience. Compare ordinary and quiet speech with the background bed and louder passages. First correct mismatched recordings with clip gain or automation. Use gentle compression only when the source dynamics need control; aggressive compression can make a restorative practice tiring to listen to.
- Measure loudness and true peak. Use a meter that reports integrated loudness and true peak over the intended programme, or over representative sections if the full programme is too long to measure at once. Keep output below digital clipping. A peak meter alone cannot establish integrated loudness or whether quiet narration remains intelligible.
- Choose a conservative true-peak ceiling if useful. AES guidance for lossy-encoded internet streams recommends a maximum true peak of −1 dBTP at codec input. This is broader internet-audio guidance, not a YouTube live requirement. If you use it as a safety ceiling, identify it as your chosen engineering reference—not a platform mandate. AES technical documents.
- Test the complete delivery chain. YouTube recommends testing with audio representative of the stream. Make an unlisted or private test where practical, then listen through the YouTube player to narration, ambience, pauses, the loop point and transitions. Check at a normal listening level and, if feasible, on more than one playback device. Headphones can help reveal details during listening, but they do not measure LUFS or true peak.
- Monitor continuity during the stream. Check the live player and stream health for silence, unexpected jumps, distortion and playout failure. YouTube’s general streaming tips advise monitoring audio and video quality continuously. YouTube’s live streaming tips.
What Stable volume does—and does not do
YouTube’s Stable volume is a playback feature, enabled by default when available, that adjusts loud and quiet variation for a viewer. YouTube says it is not available for every video. It is not a creator-side mix control, and you should not depend on it to make inconsistent narration and ambience comfortable. YouTube Help: Control video volume on your device.

If your source mix is ready and the remaining job is continuous playout, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than streaming from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. That handles playout, not audio mastering: prepare and test the mix yourself. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
