For one continuous YouTube stream, a suitably sized VPS is likely cheaper than a dedicated server in the cited examples. DigitalOcean lists VPS plans at $12/month with 2,000 GiB of transfer and $24/month with 4,000 GiB; Hetzner lists one dedicated server at $117.10/month plus a $59 setup fee, excluding VAT. These are provider-specific examples, not a universal price survey. The deciding factors are the stream’s bitrate, included outbound transfer, compute workload, location and taxes.
Why transfer can cost more than the server rental suggests
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously from your host to YouTube. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. At a constant rate for an illustrative 30-day month, those feeds use approximately:
| Feed bitrate | Decimal transfer | Binary transfer |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB | About 3,017 GiB |
| 12 Mbps | 3,888 GB | About 3,619 GiB |
These estimates are bitrate-times-time arithmetic, not provider quotes. They exclude protocol overhead and assume the bitrate remains constant; variable bitrate or network overhead can increase actual use. The calculation is bitrate in megabits per second multiplied by 2,592,000 seconds in 30 days, then divided by eight to convert bits to bytes. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR, RTMP/RTMPS, testing before going live and monitoring stream health. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube Live encoder settings.
This is the channel’s outbound feed to YouTube. YouTube handles transcoding the incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats; viewer delivery is separate from your server’s outbound stream transfer.

VPS and dedicated-server costs in the cited examples
| Option | Published price and transfer | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean VPS | $4/month: 500 GiB; $12/month: 2,000 GiB; $24/month: 4,000 GiB | Additional outbound Droplet transfer is $0.01/GiB; inbound transfer is free. Allowance is pooled across a team’s Droplets. |
| Hetzner dedicated server, AX42-1 | $117.10/month plus $59 setup | Quoted for Falkenstein and Helsinki, excluding VAT, under the adjustment effective 15 June 2026. |
DigitalOcean calls its virtual private servers Droplets. Its $24 plan’s 4,000 GiB allowance is above the arithmetic estimate for a steady 12 Mbps stream, so it appears to fit on transfer alone. That does not establish that the plan has enough CPU for your encoder workload. The $12 plan’s 2,000 GiB allowance is below either 30-day estimate, though pooled account transfer and actual stream rate affect the bill. DigitalOcean’s published $4 entry plan lists 500 GiB, 512 MiB RAM and 1 vCPU, making it a poor transfer fit for these continuous-feed estimates absent other allowance. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing and DigitalOcean transfer documentation.
The Hetzner figure is one specific dedicated-server example, not a market-wide rate. It is far above the cited VPS rental examples before considering setup and VAT. For a single feed, it is unlikely to be the cheaper option unless its compute or bandwidth terms better match a workload that would require a more expensive virtual plan.

When a VPS is the cheaper practical choice
A VPS is the likely lower-cost starting point when the server can run your actual workflow reliably and its included or pooled transfer covers the stream. Confirm more than the headline rental price:
- Outbound transfer: Estimate monthly consumption from the encoder bitrate and compare it with the allowance in the provider’s units. Check overage rates and whether allowance is pooled.
- Compute allocation: DigitalOcean distinguishes shared-CPU and dedicated-CPU Droplets. Relaying or preparing an already encoded source is not the same workload as encoding or transcoding it. Do not assume an inexpensive VM will handle a particular source reliably without workload-specific sizing or testing. DigitalOcean plan guidance.
- Region and network conditions: Compare the server location and the provider’s current terms for that location; the example prices above are not a universal comparison.
- Full bill: Include setup charges, VAT or other tax, currency, billing period and any usage outside the stream. DigitalOcean pools Droplet transfer at team level, so other Droplets can change what is available to this one.
When a dedicated server may make sense
A dedicated server is more plausible when the workload needs compute capacity that a suitably priced VPS cannot provide, or when the dedicated provider’s total bandwidth terms make the complete cost competitive. Compare the same stream workload and transfer requirements on both options; a more powerful processor alone does not prove that the dedicated server is better value.

- Choose the outgoing bitrate. Use YouTube’s encoder settings as a starting point for the resolution and frame rate. For H.264, the cited recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. YouTube encoder guidance.
- Estimate a full month of transfer. For a 30-day continuous feed, use roughly 3,017 GiB at 10 Mbps or 3,619 GiB at 12 Mbps, then leave headroom for overhead and rate variation.
- Price a VPS with enough transfer and compute. Add likely overage to the rental price and verify whether shared or dedicated CPU suits your encoder task. A plan that covers bandwidth but cannot run the workload is not a valid cost comparison.
- Compare the dedicated quote on equal terms. Include setup, tax, included transfer, location and billing rules. Use the same stream bitrate and workload for both quotes.
Or let it run in the cloud
