You can run classic PC gameplay as a continuous YouTube live stream with an encoder, but first confirm your channel is eligible and that you have rights to every game and audio element. For an archive you can count on, do not rely on YouTube to save one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours: YouTube says it may not capture it at all. Use shorter broadcast blocks and a verified local recording if preserving the footage matters.
Check YouTube eligibility before setting up
- Your channel must be verified.
- It must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube states that streamers must be at least 16 years old.

Clear rights to each game and its audio
There is no blanket rule that makes classic games free to stream. A game’s age, your ownership of a copy, or permission from one publisher does not establish rights for another game. Check the current policy for every title, and separately consider its soundtrack and any third-party material visible or audible in the footage.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed material may cause an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Publisher policies are game-specific
SEGA’s guidelines, last updated March 12, 2026, are one example—not a rule for all classic games. They allow gameplay videos on YouTube subject to conditions, including new elements such as the player’s own commentary or narration. They also require permission from appropriate rights holders for third-party intellectual property included in footage, including music; specific product policies can take priority over the general guidelines. Read the applicable publisher policy and terms for your selected game before going live.
Set up the gameplay encoder in YouTube Studio
YouTube identifies encoders as a standard path for gameplay, overlays, and other production equipment. The encoder sends your game feed to YouTube; YouTube’s Live Control Room lets you preview the incoming stream and start the scheduled broadcast.

- Create or schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts for the event.
- Copy the ingest details: In the stream setup, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and enables YouTube to accept it. Do not publish or share it.
- Choose the protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Select a protocol supported by your encoder and the current YouTube setup instructions.
- Send a preview: Start streaming from the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event. Confirm that the picture, game audio, commentary if used, and overlays are correct.
- Start the broadcast: When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room for the scheduled workflow. Keep the control room and encoder status available to monitor the feed.
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for settings your specific encoder exposes; the cited guidance does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every game and connection. Avoid guessing at a single setting for all hardware and network conditions.
Design the stream around YouTube’s 12-hour archive caveat
YouTube says that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. That makes one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast a poor choice if viewers need a dependable YouTube replay or rewind access.

If the archive matters, record locally and verify that the recording file is growing. A local file is a backup, not a substitute for checking YouTube’s actual archive behavior.
Operate and monitor the stream continuously
A 24/7 broadcast needs an operating plan, not just a successful start. YouTube recommends reliable network service, enough upload bandwidth with headroom, preview checks, continuous audio/video monitoring, local archive checks, and testing a backup encoder or failover path. These practices reduce operational risk; they do not guarantee uptime.

- Network: Use a reliable connection and leave upload headroom rather than running at the connection’s full capacity.
- Health: Watch YouTube’s stream health and status information for detected configuration issues. The live-stream API also exposes ingestion settings and health/status data for operators using API-based monitoring.
- Audio and picture: Monitor continuously for frozen video, silent or distorted audio, unexpected desktop content, and playback ending at the source.
- Local archive: Confirm the recording is being written and that available storage can accommodate the planned duration.
- Recovery: Test the backup encoder or failover procedure before relying on it. Know how to restore the feed if the primary encoder or network fails.
