Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood made the 14-track album with Watt at Metropolis Studios in West London in less than a month.
What became of the Rolling Stones’ studio return?
The story moved from a brief confirmation to a finished record. In September 2025, Watt told Rolling Stone that he could confirm the band had recorded together, but he would not disclose more. An earlier report relayed Marlon Richards’s comment that the group were nearly done recording in London; a Stones spokesperson declined comment. That was an early, partly indirect account, not a full description of the eventual album.
The band announced Foreign Tongues on May 5, 2026, and released it July 10 through Polydor/Universal Music. The label identifies it as the band’s 14-track studio album following Hackney Diamonds by less than three years. Universal Music Canada’s announcement confirms the release and credits.
Where and how quickly was it recorded?
The sessions took place at Metropolis Studios in West London and lasted under a month, according to the label. Coverage of the album’s release event describes the period as about four weeks. Those accounts point to a concentrated London recording period, rather than a long, publicly documented schedule.

Jagger described the sessions as “a very intense few weeks,” adding that the studio room was small enough for everyone to feel the energy. Richards called it “a month of concentrated punch.” Wood said the atmosphere was creative and that the band was often able to nail a take on the first try. These are the musicians’ descriptions of the process, not independent measurements of recording time or performance.
Who made the album?
Watt produced the sessions, reuniting with Jagger, Richards and Wood after working on Hackney Diamonds. The album also features longtime collaborators Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford and Steve Jordan, with guest appearances by Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney, Robert Smith and Chad Smith. The complete credited lineup appears in the label’s album announcement.

What is on Foreign Tongues?
The album has 14 tracks. The label describes 12 as new compositions; the other two are covers: Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” and Chuck Berry’s “Beautiful Delilah.” The announced track list begins with “Rough and Twisted” and ends with “Beautiful Delilah.”
One track links the new release to the band’s earlier sessions with Charlie Watts. He plays on “Hit Me in the Head,” using a performance captured during one of his final recording sessions before his death in 2021. Release-event reporting says Steve Jordan plays on the other songs and notes that four tracks pre-date the album sessions; the available announcement does not identify those four by name.

What did Andrew Watt say about the recording sound?
In a September 2026 interview, Watt said the album was made without click tracks, with musicians set up close enough to see and feel one another. He also said microphone bleed—the sound of one instrument or voice being picked up by another microphone—was left in as part of the recording’s character. MusicRadar’s report says Jagger’s vocals were recorded with a Sony C800G microphone. That detail describes one part of the setup; it does not establish that a particular microphone alone accounts for the album’s sound.
Does the album announcement mean the Stones are touring?
No tour plan is established by the sources covering the album and studio return. The account of the release event says touring did not come up there, so the record’s release should not be treated as a tour announcement.
