How to Restart a YouTube Gaming Replay Stream Automatically After a Server Reboot

A reboot stops the encoder, not just the broadcast. Configure host-level startup and YouTube’s stream behavior separately, then verify the public stream after reboot.

A server reboot stops the encoder that was sending your gaming replay to YouTube. To resume automatically, configure the server to launch the encoder after boot, ensure it can access the replay and its credentials, and decide whether YouTube should start the broadcast when encoder data arrives. YouTube’s auto-start setting handles only that last step; it does not restart OBS, FFmpeg, or the server process.

How automatic recovery works

Think of recovery as two separate layers:

  1. Server recovery: An operating-system startup mechanism or process supervisor launches the encoder after reboot and, if configured, retries after a failure. The encoder needs access to the replay file, its settings and credentials, and a working network connection.
  2. YouTube broadcast behavior: The encoder sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and key. YouTube then either starts the broadcast automatically when data arrives or waits for an action in Live Control Room, depending on the stream settings.

YouTube describes auto-start this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” That setting governs YouTube’s response to incoming encoder data; it is not a boot scheduler. YouTube: Manage live stream settings

Set up the stream before automating it

  1. Confirm the replay works manually. Start the intended encoder and replay, then verify that the correct YouTube broadcast receives video. Resolve file, audio, account, and ingest problems before adding boot automation.
  2. Check the YouTube stream configuration. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream and its encoder connection details. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to send the feed. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  3. Choose the broadcast start behavior. Enable auto-start if the broadcast should go live when the encoder sends data. Otherwise, plan for someone to use Live Control Room after the encoder reconnects. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented flow includes connecting the encoder and clicking “Go live” after the preview appears; the applicable auto-start setting can change that manual step. YouTube: Manage live stream settings YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  4. Check any reused settings. YouTube says auto-start and auto-stop selections are copied when you use “Reuse settings.” Verify those options on the new stream rather than assuming the copied broadcast will behave as intended. YouTube: Manage live stream settings

Configure the server to relaunch the encoder

Use a startup mechanism suited to the server’s operating system and the encoder you chose: for example, a desktop startup entry, an operating-system task or service, or a process supervisor. There is no single safe command that applies to every OS, OBS version, replay location, and account configuration. OBS’s launch-parameter reference explains available arguments, but it does not establish that a particular unattended reboot setup will work end to end. OBS: Launch parameters

Configure and verify these responsibilities in the mechanism you select:

  • 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
  • Launch at boot: Start the correct encoder profile and replay, not merely the encoder application with an empty scene or project.
  • Wait for connectivity or retry: The server may start before its network connection or router is ready. Add an appropriate delay, network-readiness check, or retry behavior for the chosen OS and encoder.
  • Use the right execution context: A task or service may run as a different account from your normal desktop session. Confirm that this account can read the media, load the encoder configuration, and access any required credentials.
  • Handle failures deliberately: Decide whether a crashed encoder should be restarted and how repeated failures will be surfaced. A startup entry by itself does not necessarily restart a process that later exits.
  • Protect the stream key: Avoid putting secrets in exposed command lines, public scripts, screenshots, or logs. Use the encoder’s supported credential storage and restrict access to the configuration.

OBS users have discussed using the --startstreaming launch option with Windows startup or Task Scheduler, while noting that OBS can start before network equipment is ready. Treat this as community guidance, not a guaranteed recovery recipe; confirm the option and behavior for your OBS version and configuration. OBS forum discussion: automatically start streaming after restart OBS’s YouTube guide is also useful background, but it does not certify a universal cross-platform reboot procedure. OBS: YouTube Streaming Guide

Test recovery after a reboot

Do the first test during a maintenance window, especially if viewers expect the channel to remain live. A running encoder process is not enough to prove that YouTube is broadcasting.

  1. Save the encoder configuration and confirm the replay file remains in its expected location.
  2. Reboot the server deliberately.
  3. Check that the startup mechanism ran and that the intended encoder process is active.
  4. Check the encoder’s status or logs for a successful connection and outgoing data.
  5. Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing stream to confirm the broadcast is actually live. If auto-start is off, complete the required manual action.
  6. If reliability matters, separately test recovery after an encoder interruption and a network interruption. Confirm that a retry does not leave the encoder running without a live YouTube broadcast.

Common reasons recovery fails

What you see Likely cause What to check
The server reboots, but no encoder is running. The startup entry or task did not run, points to the wrong profile, or launches under a different account. Check the startup mechanism’s status and logs, its configured account, and the encoder path and arguments.
The encoder opens but the replay is missing. The boot-time account cannot access the media, or the configured file path is unavailable or changed. Check the replay path and file permissions from the same account used at boot.
The encoder runs but cannot connect to YouTube. Network connectivity was not ready, or the stream URL, key, or configuration is wrong. Check connectivity, the encoder’s connection status, and the stream details in Live Control Room. Add suitable wait or retry behavior if startup races the network.
YouTube receives data, but viewers do not see a live broadcast. The broadcast may require a manual “Go live” action, or the wrong stream may be selected. Check the intended stream and its auto-start setting in Live Control Room.
The stream works after a reboot but not after an encoder crash. The boot mechanism starts the process only at system startup and does not supervise later exits. Configure an appropriate process-restart policy and verify its behavior with a controlled interruption.

Know what reboot recovery does not guarantee

Restarting an encoder can restore a feed, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or indefinite archive. YouTube states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not infer from reboot recovery that a single replay broadcast can run indefinitely and be archived as one continuous recording. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

For gaming replays, also make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the game footage, music, overlays, and other material in the video. A server restart setting does not change YouTube’s copyright or channel policies; check the applicable rules for your content and account before running a replay stream.
