Azure’s total depends on the VM, region, operating system, runtime, storage and outbound data; a home PC’s electricity cost depends on its measured power draw and your local electricity tariff. Compare both for the same hours and stream bitrate, and include every cost that applies.
How to compare the costs fairly
Use the same monthly operating hours and comparable stream settings for each option. Do not compare an Azure VM’s compute line item with only a home PC’s electricity bill: include Azure resources attached to the deployment, and decide explicitly whether to include any incremental home internet, hardware depreciation or cooling costs.
Estimate the full Azure bill
Azure’s VM price varies by size, region and operating system. Storage is billed separately, and an OS disk can continue to incur charges if you stop the VM but retain the disk. Depending on your configuration, virtual networking, a public IP and outbound data transfer may also affect the bill. Microsoft’s cost guidance identifies VM, storage, virtual network, bandwidth and other resources as possible cost components: Plan to manage costs for virtual machines.
Use the Azure pricing calculator with your chosen region, VM size, operating system, runtime, disk and networking configuration. Azure describes VM pricing by size and operating system, separate storage charges, and minute-level billing for partial hours in its overview: Overview of virtual machines in Azure. The VM price alone is not a complete stream-cost estimate.

Calculate home-PC electricity
Measure the computer’s average input power while it is doing the actual streaming workload, then use:
Monthly electricity cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × operating hours × electricity price per kWh.

For example, enter your measured watts, the hours you plan to run, and the per-kWh price on your electricity bill. A plug-in power meter can help measure a particular PC; no universal PC wattage or household electricity tariff is established here. Add internet, depreciation or cooling only if you can estimate the incremental cost for your circumstances.
Include the stream’s outbound data and bandwidth needs
A continuously running stream sends data for every hour it is live. For a rough payload estimate, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by 3,600 and stream hours, then divide by 8 to get megabytes before protocol and packaging overhead. Convert units consistently. At a constant 1 Mbps, the payload is about 0.45 decimal GB per hour; this is arithmetic, not an estimate of your complete bill.

Azure charges for outbound data transfer under its bandwidth pricing model, with prices dependent on geographic zone: Azure bandwidth pricing. A VM’s outbound throughput ceiling also varies by size: Azure virtual machine network throughput. Check that the selected size can sustain your stream, not merely that it can run the streaming software.
Your home connection also needs sufficient upload capacity. YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available,” and recommends 20% upload headroom. It also warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Record the region, currency, configuration, runtime, bitrate, electricity tariff and measurement period alongside your numbers. The comparison is only useful when its assumptions are visible and both sides cover the same operating period.

A home PC uses equipment and an internet connection you already control, but it must remain on and connected for the stream to continue. An Azure VM moves the workload to a cloud deployment, which requires configuration and ongoing administration; its bandwidth capacity depends on the chosen size. Neither option can be declared inherently more reliable from these cost and configuration facts alone. YouTube notes that a network disruption can break a stream, so consider your own connection, monitoring and recovery plan rather than assuming either location guarantees uninterrupted viewing.

For either setup, also consider whether the looped material is suitable for YouTube and whether you have rights to stream it. YouTube says its monetization policies apply to live streams and that repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible for monetization; the policy page notes a clarification dated July 15, 2025: YouTube channel monetization policies. YouTube also says live ad slots are not guaranteed to serve: Monetize your live stream. Treat potential revenue separately from infrastructure costs, not as an assured offset. YouTube’s livestream terms also require providers to hold the necessary rights for live content: YouTube Terms of Service.
