OBS does not automatically match the average loudness of separate lesson clips. Balance each lesson source by listening and adjusting its gain or mixer fader; use a compressor to tame wide volume swings within a source, then a limiter last to catch peaks. Record a representative session and listen back before going live.
What OBS can—and cannot—normalize
“Normalize” can mean two different things: making separate lesson files sound equally loud, or reducing the difference between quiet and loud moments within one file. OBS’s built-in compressor addresses the second problem: it turns down signal above a threshold. It does not guarantee that separate lessons have the same average or perceived loudness. For that, compare and adjust each source individually.
A limiter is also not a loudness normalizer. It catches peaks above a ceiling; it does not raise a quiet lesson to match a louder one. The practical approach is source-by-source balancing, optional compression where a lesson’s dynamics need control, and a limiter at the end of the chain.
Balance separate lessons in OBS
1. Identify and route each lesson source
Work out whether lesson audio enters OBS as separate media sources, browser audio, desktop audio, or one already-mixed signal. Confirm that each lesson reaches the expected channel in the Audio Mixer. The exact routing depends on your scenes and capture setup; if multiple lessons arrive as one mixed channel, you cannot adjust their levels independently inside OBS.

2. Set a clean starting level
- Play a representative passage and listen at the source application or device.
- Check the operating-system level and then the corresponding OBS mixer channel. Adjust one point at a time so you can identify the cause of any change.
- Keep an eye on the OBS meter and avoid clipping. OBS describes 0 dBFS as the maximum representable digital level; exceeding it can distort the output. Its technical guide gives -20 dBFS as an alignment level selected near average speech and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum meter level. These are OBS meter guidance, not a universal YouTube loudness target.
OBS recommends starting at the device and listening both there and as audio reaches OBS. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide and Audio Mixer Technical Details.
3. Match the lesson sources by ear
Play comparable speech or teaching passages from each lesson and listen at a consistent monitoring volume. Adjust the individual source gain or mixer fader until the teaching level is similar from one lesson to the next. There is no universal fader setting: recordings can differ in their original level, voice, background sound, and dynamics. Recheck the quietest and loudest passages, not just the opening seconds.

When to add OBS filters
| Tool | Use it for | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Gain or fader | A source that is consistently quieter or louder than the others | It does not control changing peaks by itself; check headroom after adjusting. |
| Compressor | Wide level swings within one source, such as speech that alternates between quiet and loud | It does not match the average loudness of separate lesson files. |
| Limiter | Catching signal peaks above a chosen threshold | It does not lift quiet sections to match loud ones. |
| Noise gate or suppression | Reducing unwanted background noise when appropriate | These are not tools for matching lesson loudness. |
Compressor: control variation within a lesson
Add a Compressor filter to a source only if its quiet and loud passages vary enough to distract or make speech hard to follow. A lower threshold makes compression begin earlier; a higher ratio applies stronger reduction above the threshold. Attack and release shape how quickly the compressor responds. OBS’s displayed defaults are threshold -18 dB, ratio 10:1, attack 6 ms, release 60 ms, and output gain 0 dB. They are defaults, not prescribed settings for every voice or recording.
OBS says the compressor usually belongs near the beginning of a filter chain. Its Compressor Filter guide explains the controls. Avoid stacking heavy compression and substantial output gain without listening: added gain raises the compressed signal and can use up peak headroom.

- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Limiter: catch excessive peaks
Put the Limiter last in the relevant filter chain. OBS documents a threshold of -6 dB and release of 60 ms as its displayed defaults, not mandatory values. Lowering the threshold caps peaks lower, but does not make quiet lesson passages louder. Tune while listening to real material and watching the meter. See the OBS Limiter Filter guide.
Use the meter for peaks, not perceived loudness
OBS’s peak meter helps you spot high signal levels, but a peak reading is not a measurement of integrated perceived loudness across a full lesson. OBS’s technical article describes a VU indicator that integrates RMS over 300 ms and notes its limitations. The cited OBS documentation does not prescribe an integrated LUFS target for YouTube study streams, so do not treat the meter’s dBFS figures as LUFS or as YouTube requirements.

Test the whole lesson sequence before streaming
- Record a representative session containing several lessons, their transitions, and the loudest passage you expect.
- Listen to the recording, checking whether quiet speech remains intelligible, loud sections stay controlled, and transitions do not cause abrupt jumps.
- If one source is consistently out of balance, adjust its gain or fader. If a source varies too much internally, revisit its compressor settings. If peaks still exceed your chosen ceiling, check the limiter and signal level feeding it.
- Record and listen again after changes. Do not rely on a meter glance or on monitoring only one short passage.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends monitoring and listening back to a recording of a normal session before going live.

YouTube describes playback enhancements that may improve clarity or balance, including Stable volume, which can reduce variation between quiet and loud parts. It says these enhancements are not applied to every video. Viewers’ settings and accessibility preferences can also affect playback, and creators can manage the default for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer. Treat this as a playback caveat, not a substitute for balancing your OBS sources. Details are in YouTube’s Video & audio quality enhancements help page.

Common problems and fixes
- One lesson is much quieter throughout: Raise that source’s gain or fader after checking its source and operating-system level. Recheck peaks afterward.
- Speech jumps between quiet and loud within a lesson: Try a compressor on that source and adjust threshold and ratio by listening. Compression will not match it to other lesson files.
- Peaks distort or sound harsh: Lower the level feeding the chain and use a limiter last as a peak guard. A limiter cannot repair clipping that already occurred earlier in the signal path.
- A limiter makes no difference to quiet passages: That is expected. It caps high peaks; balance quiet sources with gain or faders.
- The OBS meter looks safe but lessons still sound uneven: Peak readings do not describe average perceived loudness. Compare representative passages and listen to the recording.
- YouTube playback sounds different between viewers: Enhancements are not applied to every video, and viewer controls may affect playback. Make the OBS mix consistent before relying on platform playback.
