There is no official or universally accepted ranking of Elvis Presley’s best songs. This editorial selection weighs recognition and chart context alongside vocal performance, stylistic range and each song’s place in his career. The order is a judgment, not a chart formula; the aim is to represent more than one era of a career that moved from raw rockabilly to pop ballads, gospel-inflected drama and later Memphis recordings.
Graceland’s recording history traces that range through the early Sun sessions, Nashville and Hollywood, Stax in Memphis and the Jungle Room at Graceland. The songs below offer a compact route through those shifts.
The top 20 Elvis Presley songs
-
“Suspicious Minds”
Elvis turns a song about mistrust into a sustained dramatic performance: the vocal grows more urgent as the arrangement swells, then the repeated refrain keeps the tension alive. It is a late-career high point and a strong example of how he could make polished pop feel emotionally unsettled.
-
“That’s All Right”
Recorded during the July 5–6, 1954 Sun sessions, this is the essential starting point for hearing Elvis’s early style take shape. The loose, propulsive performance brings country phrasing and rhythm-and-blues energy into a sound that would become central to his rock-and-roll identity. Graceland’s account of those sessions also places “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and “I Love You Because” alongside it. Graceland’s recording-history account gives the session dates and context.

“Heartbreak Hotel”
Its spare, echoing atmosphere makes loneliness feel physical, while Elvis’s phrasing keeps the performance from becoming a mere exercise in gloom. Graceland identifies the recording session at Nashville’s RCA Studios as January 10, 1956. The song is a key bridge from the Sun-era sound to the larger national breakthrough that followed.
-
“Hound Dog”
All swagger and attack, “Hound Dog” shows Elvis using rhythmic bite and stage presence as much as melody. Its familiar hook makes it one of his most recognizable performances, but the clipped phrasing and vocal force are what keep it exciting rather than merely nostalgic.
-
“Can’t Help Falling in Love”
This gentle ballad makes restraint its strength. Elvis lets the melody carry the feeling, creating a romantic standard that stands apart from the high-energy singles without sounding like a lesser or incidental side of his artistry.
-
“Jailhouse Rock”
The song’s tightly wound groove and vivid, theatrical delivery make it an unusually complete piece of rock-and-roll storytelling. It has the punch of a hit single and the movement of a performance built to be seen as well as heard.

“If I Can Dream”
Elvis builds from a measured opening into a full-throated plea for hope. The scale of the vocal gives the song its force: rather than relying on a catchy hook, it asks him to sustain conviction across an increasingly impassioned performance.
-
“Mystery Train”
A lean, restless early recording, “Mystery Train” lets the rhythm do much of the storytelling. Its place in the Sun period matters, but so does the economy of the performance: Elvis sounds alert to every pause and turn in the groove.
-
“In the Ghetto”
This narrative ballad trades swagger for sober storytelling. Elvis sings with controlled empathy, letting the song’s account of poverty and violence unfold without overplaying it. It adds social perspective to a list often dominated by romance and rock-and-roll exuberance.
-
“Don’t Be Cruel”
Light on its feet and instantly memorable, this is one of Elvis’s clearest demonstrations of how a relaxed vocal can still drive a record. The playful phrasing gives the song personality without crowding its simple, durable melody.

-
“Blue Moon of Kentucky”
Recorded in the same early Sun session range as “That’s All Right,” this performance is a useful counterpoint to its flip side. Its country roots are audible, but the rhythmic lift gives it a freshness that helps explain why the early recordings resist a single genre label.
-
“Are You Lonesome Tonight?”
Elvis makes the song’s intimate address feel conversational, then leans into its theatrical spoken passage. The contrast between quiet vulnerability and performance flair is the point: the record is a ballad, but never a static one.
-
“All Shook Up”
A compact burst of nervous energy, “All Shook Up” finds Elvis turning romantic excitement into rhythmic play. The vocal is buoyant and nimble, and the song’s concise construction makes every phrase count.
-
“Love Me Tender”
Softly sung and direct, “Love Me Tender” reveals the appeal of Elvis at his most unguarded. Its simplicity is not a lack of character; it is a deliberate contrast to the harder-edged records surrounding it in his early catalogue.

“Burning Love”
Built around a driving pulse and a more forceful vocal, “Burning Love” shows Elvis still able to sound exuberant in the 1970s. It is a late-period hit that favors immediacy over introspection, adding needed energy to a cross-era selection.
-
“It’s Now or Never”
This sweeping pop ballad gives Elvis room for a sustained, open-throated performance. Its scale and romantic urgency show how comfortably he could move beyond the leaner sound of the early rock-and-roll records.
-
“Blue Suede Shoes”
“Blue Suede Shoes” is a sharp snapshot of Elvis’s early rock-and-roll attitude: playful, rhythmic and built around an irresistible refrain. It belongs here both for its enduring recognition and for how naturally his voice rides the song’s swagger.
-
“An American Trilogy”
A dramatic medley rather than a conventional pop song, “An American Trilogy” showcases Elvis’s command of scale and ceremonial performance. Its sweeping arrangement asks for a different kind of vocal presence from the intimate ballads, and he meets that demand with conviction.

“Hurt”
In the later Jungle Room period, Elvis gives “Hurt” a weathered intensity that makes the song feel less like polished pop than a personal reckoning. Graceland identifies it among the recordings from those final sessions, a setting that offers a striking contrast with the Sun recordings a little over two decades earlier.
-
“Way Down”
“Way Down” closes the list with a sturdy, upbeat performance from the final stretch of Elvis’s recording career. Its rhythmic drive provides a useful reminder that his later work was not confined to ballads or reflective material.
Why this list spans the whole career
Elvis’s catalogue cannot be reduced to the first wave of rock-and-roll hits. Graceland’s recording-history account describes early Sun work, Nashville and Hollywood sessions, recordings at Memphis’s Stax studio in 1973, and final sessions in the Jungle Room at Graceland. Its examples of the Stax period include “Promised Land,” “Raised on Rock” and “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby”; for the Jungle Room, it names “Hurt” and “Moody Blue.” Those settings help explain why a useful listening list needs both stylistic range and chronological breadth.
The official Elvis music catalogue documents releases across the career, but release dates are not recording dates. Graceland’s official releases catalogue is useful for tracing what was issued; its studio-history article provides recording context.
How to choose a starting point
- For the early breakthrough: Begin with “That’s All Right,” “Mystery Train” and “Heartbreak Hotel” to hear the change from the Sun sessions into the 1956 national breakthrough.
- For the biggest familiar hooks: Try “Hound Dog,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “All Shook Up.”
- For ballads and vocal drama: Choose “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight?,” “It’s Now or Never” and “If I Can Dream.”
- For later Elvis: Hear “Suspicious Minds,” “In the Ghetto,” “Burning Love,” “Hurt” and “Way Down” as distinct examples rather than treating the 1970s as one sound.
Graceland’s achievements page estimates that Elvis sold more than one billion records worldwide, with 40% sold outside the United States. It also reports 149 appearances on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, including 114 top-40 entries, 40 top-10 entries and 18 number ones. These figures describe reach and chart performance; they do not settle which songs are artistically strongest. Graceland’s achievements page gives the estimates and U.S. chart scope.
Where to hear a chart-oriented overview
For a physical compilation, Graceland’s official store lists Elvis Presley 30 #1 Hits CD, an Audio CD listing with 31 tracks. Its selection includes many familiar songs in this article, including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “In the Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds.” The title signals a chart-oriented collection, not a definitive ranking of the twenty strongest songs.
The store also lists The Essential Elvis Presley Vinyl LP Set as a two-disc, 28-track set with a stated release date of January 2016. Its track list includes “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Suspicious Minds,” “In the Ghetto” and “Burning Love.” Check the retailer’s current listing for edition and availability.
