To start a live stream with AWS Elemental Link, connect and configure the Link device, create an Elemental Link input in AWS Elemental MediaLive in the same AWS Region, then attach that input to a MediaLive channel when your source is sending video. MediaLive handles the channel and its output; Link is the on-premises device that sends your camera or production feed into AWS.
Before you begin
- Confirm whether your device is Link HD or Link UHD; their supported workflows differ.
- Connect the device to power, an IP network, and a supported video source. AWS lists 3G-SDI and HDMI connections; check the documentation for your particular unit for model-specific requirements.
- Make sure the device is visible to the AWS account you intend to use, and that you have the IAM permissions needed to set it up and create MediaLive resources. A device obtained through an AWS reseller may need to be claimed.
- Choose the AWS Region for the workflow before creating resources. The Link device and the relevant MediaLive input and channel must be in the same Region.
- Have the upstream operator ready to power on the device, connect it to the internet, and send the production feed when you are ready to start the channel.
See the AWS Elemental Link documentation and the AWS Elemental Link data sheet for device-specific setup and connection details.
Start a stream through MediaLive
1. Configure the Link device
In the MediaLive console, locate the Link input device and configure it for the production feed. Give it a descriptive name and select the intended input source: SDI, HDMI, or Auto where that behavior is available and appropriate. If both connectors might carry an active signal, select the source you intend to use rather than relying on automatic selection.
You can optionally set a maximum bitrate. AWS says that leaving this field blank lets the device determine a bitrate suited to network conditions between the device and MediaLive. Choose a setting based on your feed and connection rather than assuming one bitrate fits every event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Create an Elemental Link input
In MediaLive, create a new input and choose the Elemental Link input type. Create it in the same Region as the device. Select the input class and the one or two Link devices required for that class; AWS presents the applicable device choices during input creation. The resulting input details show a device identifier, and a thumbnail is available when the device is pushing video.
3. Attach the input to a channel when the source is ready
Once the upstream operator has powered on the Link hardware, connected it to the internet, and started sending video, attach the input to a MediaLive channel as you would other MediaLive inputs. AWS recommends waiting for the active source before attaching it to a running channel to avoid charges associated with an idle input and running channel.

Configure the channel’s output for the destination you need. AWS’s MediaLive workflow wizard also supports Link hardware as an input and offers documented delivery paths that include YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, and AWS workflows. The destination does not configure itself merely because you selected Link: output settings and availability depend on the workflow, account, and event.
4. Confirm the feed before diagnosing the output
Check the Link device’s thumbnail while it is streaming and inspect its device metrics. Confirm that the intended camera or production source is arriving at the input before troubleshooting channel or destination settings. If the thumbnail is absent or shows the wrong source, first check device power, network connectivity, source cabling, and the selected HDMI or SDI input.

Choose the right Link model and workflow
| Device or workflow | Documented use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Link HD | MediaLive input for HD or lower; produces the same resolution in HEVC for a MediaLive input. | Not documented as a MediaConnect flow source. |
| Link UHD | MediaLive input at UHD or lower, or a MediaConnect flow source. For MediaConnect, AWS lists AVC or HEVC output. | Confirm the model and workflow requirements before promising a resolution or format. |
| MediaLive channel | Use an Elemental Link input as the channel’s source, then configure the channel output for the intended destination. | Keep the device, input, and channel in the same AWS Region. |
| MediaConnect flow | Use Link UHD as a source for a MediaConnect flow. | Keep the device and flow in the same Region. AWS’s documented flow setup specifies a Zixi push source with AES 128 static-key encryption, plus the required flow and IAM details. |
For a MediaConnect flow, follow the separate AWS instructions for using Elemental Link with MediaConnect. Those flow-specific requirements do not apply to the simpler MediaLive channel-input procedure.
How to stream from Elemental Link to YouTube
Use MediaLive as the documented bridge: configure Link as the channel input, then set up the channel’s YouTube output using the settings and credentials required by the current MediaLive workflow. The AWS workflow wizard lists YouTube among its supported destinations, but Link itself is not a YouTube encoder or a destination selector. Confirm the current console labels, account eligibility, regional support, and output configuration in AWS documentation before the event.

Before going live, verify that the source feed is visible in MediaLive, that the YouTube output is configured for the intended event, and that the account and content comply with YouTube’s current live-streaming, copyright, and monetization policies. AWS’s Link setup does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material in your programme.

- The device does not appear in MediaLive: Check that it is visible to the correct AWS account, that you are in its Region, and that the necessary IAM permissions are in place. If purchased through an AWS reseller, confirm whether it must be claimed.
- No video thumbnail appears: Confirm the device is powered, connected to the network, and receiving an active feed. Check the physical connection and ensure the configured source matches the cable in use (HDMI or SDI).
- The wrong feed is selected: Check the device’s source setting. If both HDMI and SDI may be active, explicitly select the intended source instead of relying on Auto.
- The input or channel is unavailable in the workflow: Verify that the device, input, and channel are being created in the same AWS Region, and confirm that the device model supports the workflow you are attempting.
- A MediaConnect flow will not accept the device: Verify that the unit is Link UHD and check the documented flow requirements, including same-Region setup and Zixi push with AES 128 static-key encryption.
- Charges begin before the event: Avoid attaching the input to a running channel until the operator has powered the device, connected it to the internet, and begun sending video. AWS specifically recommends this timing to avoid charges for an idle input and running channel.
- Video arrives in MediaLive but not at YouTube: The Link-to-input path is working; inspect the channel’s output configuration, YouTube event details, and current AWS and YouTube account requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than send a live camera feed through AWS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that different job. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera feeds or MediaLive/MediaConnect workflows. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
