Use a live stream when viewers need to see the service as it happens. A Premiere creates a shareable watch page with a countdown and chat; it is shared playback of an uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
Premiere or live stream: which suits your service?

YouTube Help describes live streams as media broadcast in real time and Premieres as watching a new video with creators and their community in real time. The distinction is whether the service itself is being broadcast live or whether a completed recording is being watched together.
How to schedule a church service as a Premiere
- Prepare the service recording. Export the completed video and review it before uploading. Shorts are not supported for Premieres, and YouTube documents output-resolution limitations; check its current supported formats and the options shown in your channel before finalizing the file.
- Upload through YouTube Studio. Sign in to YouTube Studio, upload the video, and enter its details as you would for a channel video.
- Set the date and time. In the upload’s scheduling options, choose when the congregation should gather. YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours ahead so viewers have an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed.
- Enable the Premiere. Select “Set as Premiere.” Choose a countdown setting if the option is available and useful to your service, then schedule the video. Countdown customization is optional.
- Share the watch page. Once created, the public Premiere page can be shared in the church’s usual communications. Invite viewers to set a reminder; before playback, they can visit, comment, and chat.
- Host the scheduled viewing. Be present in chat if staffing allows, moderate it, and prepare prompts or talking points suited to your congregation. At the scheduled time, the countdown runs and shared playback begins.
- Keep the recording available afterward. When the Premiere ends, the video remains on the channel as a regular upload, with chat replay available.
Plan participation and promotion
Share the Premiere watch page rather than only announcing a time, so viewers can reach the event page and set reminders. YouTube’s recommendation to schedule at least 24 hours ahead is an opportunity for the thumbnail to appear in subscriptions feeds, not a guarantee that every subscriber will see it.
Decide in advance who will welcome viewers and moderate chat. YouTube advises creators to be present, moderate, and prepare prompts or talking points. Adapt that advice to your church’s communication style and available volunteers; it does not establish a measured attendance or engagement benefit for churches.

When a real-time service stream is the better fit
Choose YouTube’s live-stream workflow if people need to see what is happening as it unfolds—for example, a service whose timing, participation, or events cannot be captured in a completed recording. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as live-streaming methods. An encoder is one possible route, not a requirement for uploading and scheduling a Premiere.
YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person live streaming must be at least 16. Confirm current eligibility in the channel before planning a broadcast, because platform requirements and interface details can change.

Church-specific checks before publishing
YouTube’s Premiere instructions explain the platform workflow; they do not settle a church’s permissions or policies. Before uploading a service, check the requirements that apply to your location and recording, including rights to worship music and other content, consent for recording congregants, accessibility, and pastoral or safeguarding policies. The correct answer can depend on the church’s circumstances and jurisdiction.
YouTube also documents trailers and monetization features for Premieres, but access may depend on eligibility. Check the channel’s current options rather than assuming those features are available.
