What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A UPS can keep your PC and the other equipment plugged into its battery-backed outlets powered during a mains outage—but it cannot by itself guarantee that a 24/7 YouTube stream stays live. Size the UPS for the actual watt draw of the PC, monitor, router and other essential devices, then check the model’s runtime chart at that load. Most basic desktop UPS units are intended to bridge short interruptions or allow a safe shutdown, not necessarily to power a stream all night.
What a UPS can—and cannot—keep running
A UPS provides backup power to equipment connected to its battery-backed outlets when mains power is interrupted. For a YouTube stream, that may include the streaming PC, monitor if needed, router or modem, and any network switch the connection depends on. If the router loses power, a powered PC alone cannot maintain its internet connection.
Power continuity is only one part of stream continuity. A UPS does not provide internet service, guarantee that a backup WAN connection works, or establish how YouTube will reconnect after an interruption. The result depends on your equipment, power configuration, network and the stream itself.
Choose capacity from the actual load
Measure or establish each device’s operating draw
List every device that must stay powered during an outage: PC, monitor, router or modem, network switch, and anything else essential. Use credible operating-watt figures for each and add them together. Do not use the PC power supply’s maximum rating as a substitute for its normal consumption; the cited guidance does not measure your particular computer.

Check watts and VA, with headroom
Choose a UPS whose continuous output watt capacity exceeds the combined load, and verify its VA limit as well. Schneider Electric India recommends 20–30% watt-capacity headroom in its India UPS buying guide. Schneider Electric’s U.S. guide says, “When sizing a UPS, ensure output watt capacity is 20–25% above load” (Schneider Electric UPS buying guide). These are manufacturer sizing guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular model will support a given setup.
Set a realistic runtime target
Capacity and runtime are separate questions. Output capacity tells you whether the UPS can supply the connected load; runtime depends on battery capacity, the load and the specific model. Schneider Electric India gives 5–20 minutes as a typical range for basic UPS units, depending on model and load. That broad category guidance is not a runtime promise for your equipment.

- 1500VA / 900W RELIABLE BACKUP POWER: The highest VA capacity available for home use; delivers short-term battery power to keep essential devices powered during blackouts, surges, and unexpected power interruptions
- TEN PROTECTED OUTLETS: Power your entire setup with 5 battery backup outlets for essential devices, and 5 surge-only outlets for peripherals. Plus built-in coaxial and Ethernet surge protection for added peace of mind
- AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATION (AVR): Corrects low voltage brownouts (88V+) and surges (+/-13%) without draining battery. Boosts or trims to stable 120V. Extends runtime for blackouts; Active PFC compatible for gaming PCs
- REPLACEABLE BATTERY & ENERGY STAR UPS: User-replaceable battery (APCRBC124, sold separately) for zero-downtime swaps. ENERGY STAR certified for 92%+ efficiency, cutting energy costs vs standard UPS units
- LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
Decide whether you need to ride through brief flickers, keep the stream operating through a known short outage, or shut down cleanly if power remains off. Compare the manufacturer’s runtime chart at your expected load, rather than choosing by the VA label alone. More connected equipment reduces available runtime.
For operation beyond a short backup window, look for a UPS that expressly supports an external battery configuration or investigate another suitable backup arrangement. Confirm duration using the documentation for the exact model and battery setup; do not assume a regular desktop UPS can run all night or all day.

Compare the features that affect your setup
| Selection factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Output capacity | Continuous output watts and VA both exceed the connected load with suitable headroom. |
| Runtime | The model-specific runtime chart covers your expected load and outage goal. |
| Topology | Schneider Electric says line-interactive is usually sufficient for home and office use; online double-conversion continuously supplies the load through its inverter for situations needing greater isolation from grid fluctuations. |
| Power quality and transfer | Check AVR, output waveform and transfer behavior in the exact model documentation. The general guides do not establish what a particular PC power supply requires. |
| Battery options | Confirm whether the UPS supports user-replaceable batteries or external battery modules, and which exact replacements are compatible. |
| Local fit | Check India-market outlets, service, warranty, and current availability for the precise model. |
Set up the UPS for the stream
- Inventory the essential equipment. Include the PC, router or modem and any network switch required to keep the connection available. Add a monitor only if it needs to remain powered during the outage.
- Establish the combined operating load. Add credible operating-watt figures for the devices that must stay on; do not treat a PSU’s maximum rating as the PC’s measured draw.
- Match the UPS output to the load. Apply the manufacturer’s headroom guidance, then verify both watt and VA limits for the exact model.
- Choose the outage goal. Use the model’s runtime chart at the expected load to decide whether it is suitable for bridging interruptions, maintaining operation for a defined period, or providing time for shutdown.
- Connect only essential loads to battery-backed outlets. Check the outlet labels or manual for the selected UPS. Avoid using battery runtime on equipment that does not need to remain on.
- Test the intended procedure safely. After installation, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to check backup operation and your shutdown or recovery plan under controlled conditions.
- Maintain the battery. Replace it only with a battery specified as compatible with the exact UPS model. External battery support and replacement options vary by model.
What to check when buying in India
Schneider Electric India’s store listed India-market products including the APC Back-UPS BX1100I-IN, APC Back-UPS Pro units, battery-less inverter/UPS configurations and online UPS models. A listing indicates that a product appeared in the store when accessed; it does not establish current stock, price, suitability or runtime for your load. The BX1100I-IN is an example of a locally listed desktop UPS, not a recommendation without checking its current specification and runtime chart against your equipment.
An APC-branded India retailer article dated June 14, 2026, illustrates totaling loads such as a desktop, display, router and NAS, applying headroom, and considering the runtime target. Its example wattages are illustrative, not measurements of your PC. For specifications and compatibility, use the manufacturer documentation for the exact product.

Troubleshooting common UPS problems
- The UPS overload alarm sounds or output drops: The connected load may exceed its watt or VA limit. Check the load against both ratings and disconnect nonessential equipment.
- Runtime is shorter than expected: The load may be higher than the value used for selection, or the battery configuration may not match the expected runtime. Recheck the model’s runtime chart and battery documentation; runtime declines as load rises.
- The PC stays on but the stream or internet connection stops: Confirm that the router, modem and required network equipment are also powered by battery-backed outlets. A UPS cannot ensure ISP availability or YouTube reconnection.
- The UPS does not provide the expected backup: Confirm that the device is plugged into a battery-backed outlet, not a surge-only outlet, and follow the model’s setup and battery instructions.
- You need substantially longer operation: Check whether the exact UPS explicitly supports external battery modules and the required configuration. Do not infer long runtime from the UPS’s VA rating.
