Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder to the station’s audio output, and send the feed using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Before broadcasting, confirm the channel is eligible and that the station has the rights needed for both the YouTube simulcast and any archive.
What you need before you start
- An eligible YouTube channel. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- An encoder and a usable audio signal. The encoder sends the station’s program feed to YouTube. YouTube describes encoders as supporting external audio and video hardware, but the right connection depends on the station’s mixer, playout system, computer, and available inputs. You may be able to connect directly; if the computer cannot accept a suitable line-level signal, an audio interface may be needed. A specific device is not required by YouTube.
- A visual feed. YouTube’s live player is video-based, so include a station logo, program graphic, or another visual in the encoder’s scene while sending the radio audio.
- Permission for this distribution and retention. A terrestrial broadcast or website-player agreement does not by itself establish that a YouTube simulcast or saved archive is covered. Review the station’s agreements and applicable local requirements before routing the program.
Check music and broadcast rights first
YouTube’s live-stream terms make the content provider responsible for having all necessary rights to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. The station’s country, music catalog, contracts, and collecting-society arrangements determine what permissions apply; YouTube’s terms cannot resolve those station-specific questions. Have the rights administrator check the agreements for the planned YouTube transmission and any retained recording. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the station to stop using it; if the material continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask relevant rights owners about allowlisting before relying on a music-heavy simulcast. Archived live videos may receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, choose the Stream tab to create a stream for an immediate broadcast, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling gives you a watch-page URL to share in advance. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose the station’s audio path. Connect the program output from the mixer or playout system to an input the encoder can use. Check that the signal is at the correct level and that the encoder is receiving the intended program feed. The exact cable or interface depends on the station’s equipment; test the complete path before the broadcast.
- Build a simple video scene. Add a station logo, program artwork, or other suitable visual in the encoder. Confirm that the scene is visible and that the radio audio is present in the encoder’s output.
- Copy YouTube’s connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes a feed to the stream. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and replace it in the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. For a scheduled stream, start sending the feed and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check the sound and picture before selecting Go live.
- Monitor the watch page. Check the stream on a phone as well as a computer, and monitor audio and video during the broadcast. YouTube’s operational tips recommend confirming that a local recording is being written if you need a separate copy; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the encoder feed and end the stream in Studio when the program is over. Confirm whether the stream was archived and whether the station has permission to retain and publish that archive.
Choose a format that fits the program
One-off program or event
Create or schedule a stream for the specific program. A scheduled stream provides a watch-page URL that the station can share before it begins. Start the encoder, check its preview, and then go live from Studio.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Continuous station feed
A continuous feed uses the same direct encoder-to-YouTube connection, but it requires more attention to interruption recovery and recording. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours; streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a dependable copy matters, record locally rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not verified, has a live-stream restriction, or first-time enablement is still pending. | Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio. Enable live streaming in advance; first-time access can take up to 24 hours. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or its server URL or stream key does not match the selected stream. | Confirm the encoder is running and recheck the URL and key against the details shown in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The picture appears but there is no radio audio | The station’s program output is not reaching the encoder’s audio input, or the wrong input is selected. | Trace the signal from the mixer or playout output to the encoder. Confirm the correct input is selected and that the encoder’s audio meter responds. Check whether the computer requires an audio interface to accept the station’s output. |
| The stream is interrupted after it starts | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the channel may have a copyright or Community Guidelines issue. Content ID allowlisting may also be missing despite a license. | Review Live Control Room notices and the station’s rights and allowlisting arrangements. Do not assume that permission for terrestrial radio or a website player settles YouTube rights. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete | YouTube may not capture broadcasts longer than 12 hours. | For a long program or continuous feed, keep a local recording and verify that it is being written during the broadcast. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the station’s use case is looping uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded material, not a live microphone or camera. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
