To broadcast a local news radio feed continuously on YouTube, route the station’s authorized audio through a live encoder, add a suitable visual component, and send the signal to a YouTube Live Control Room stream using its stream URL and key. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders, but no setup is guaranteed to stay live indefinitely: test the complete chain, monitor stream health, and plan for recovery before relying on it.
Before you start: eligibility, rights and a visual
Enable live streaming on the channel
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the broadcast. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio rather than waiting until airtime.
Confirm permission for the complete feed
Before simulcasting, confirm in writing that the station’s agreements allow distribution on YouTube and cover both the live broadcast and any resulting archive. The feed may include music, syndicated programs, news audio, graphics or other third-party material. YouTube’s terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the necessary rights for content used on Google services, including music rights, and to meet applicable laws and territory-specific licensing requirements. A station’s existing broadcast permission does not by itself establish that its contracts cover YouTube. Consult the relevant rights holders or qualified local counsel where the position is unclear.
YouTube lists an active live-stream copyright strike and a live stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons it may restrict live streaming. Check rights for every element, including material inserted during a breaking-news bulletin, and for the archive as well as the live transmission.

Plan the visual layer
A radio-only audio source needs an appropriate video component for the audiovisual live stream workflow. Decide what viewers will see—such as station identification or a program graphic—and ensure that visual material is authorized too. The cited YouTube encoder guidance supports software and standalone hardware encoders; it does not establish that one particular product is required.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and check live access. Verify that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: it is the credential that lets an encoder connect to the channel. Keep it out of public documents and messages. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the available YouTube Studio controls before continuing.
- Connect the station source to an encoder. Configure a software or standalone hardware encoder to receive the station’s audio feed and provide the chosen video component. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s destination settings. The precise controls vary by encoder, so follow its documentation for the source and destination fields.
- Choose a supported ingest and encoding setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the ordinary encoder workflow. Set a constant bitrate (CBR), use AAC or MP3 audio, and set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Select a video resolution and bitrate appropriate to the visual layer and available upload connection.
- Check the preview before going public. Start the encoder output and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that the audio is present and intelligible, the visual is correct, and the connection is stable before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Keep a person responsible for watching the stream and responding to source, encoder or network problems. Keep a documented recovery procedure at hand.

For bandwidth planning, add the configured video and audio bitrates, include any backup stream bitrate if one is running, and make sure usable upload capacity exceeds that total by the recommended 20%. Recheck from the location and connection that will actually carry the feed.
Make continuous operation recoverable
Continuous broadcasting is an operating process, not just an encoder setting. YouTube recommends preparing the stream, checking the preview, monitoring stream health and testing encoder failover. Those steps do not certify a particular arrangement as uninterrupted.

Assign monitoring and recovery responsibilities
- Name a person or role responsible for checking that the stream is live and that the audio and visual remain correct.
- Write down what to do if the station feed disappears, the encoder stops, or the internet connection fails.
- If the design includes a backup encoder, rehearse failover on the actual setup and confirm that the backup source, destination and stream key work as intended.
- After any interruption, verify the Live Control Room status and the viewer-facing watch page before assuming the broadcast has recovered.
Decide how to handle long archives
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24/7 session will be saved as one archive. If a dependable recording is part of the publishing plan, consider planned shorter streams and verify the current archive behavior in YouTube Studio for the channel.
