Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To reduce CPU use while OBS loops video to YouTube Live, first distinguish playback decoding from stream encoding. Try hardware decoding in the video source, select a compatible hardware encoder in OBS, then simplify scenes and lower output demands only if needed. Looping is a playback setting; OBS does not say that looping itself causes high CPU use.
1. Confirm what is using the CPU
OBS workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate (FPS), and scene complexity. As OBS puts it, “The CPU requirements vary considerably depending on the chosen encoder, resolution, FPS and your scene complexity.” (OBS System Requirements.)
High CPU use may come from software encoding, video playback decoding, or the overall scene. Rendering or encoding lag can also reflect GPU or whole-scene workload; it is not the same measurement as CPU use. Check the OBS log and stats rather than assuming the loop is the cause. OBS does not provide a universal CPU target or a quantified saving for these changes.
2. Check the loop and playback decoding settings
Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the video source and open its properties.
- Confirm that Loop is enabled.
- If available, try Use hardware decoding when available. This may shift decoding to a compatible GPU video decoder, but it is optional and is not the setting for encoding your outgoing stream.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- In OBS, use a VLC Video source and add the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings.
OBS requires a matching VLC architecture: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide for the source options and requirements.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Move stream encoding off the CPU when compatible
Hardware decoding and hardware encoding are separate capabilities. The decoding option affects playback of the source; the encoder controls how OBS compresses the outgoing stream.
- Open Settings → Output in OBS.
- For the streaming encoder, choose an available hardware option instead of x264 if it suits your system.
- Depending on the GPU and operating system, OBS may offer NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync. These are not available on every computer, and compatibility varies.
- Run a representative test and check both stream health and visual quality. Older hardware encoders can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default veryfast preset, so do not assume the picture will be equivalent.
Hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but they do not guarantee lower total system utilization. OBS explains the options and compatibility considerations in its Hardware Encoding guide.

4. Reduce the rest of the OBS workload
If CPU use remains high, change one item at a time so you can tell which change helps:
- Remove sources the scene does not need.
- Reduce costly filters and simplify complex browser sources or overlays.
- Use video files at a resolution appropriate for the stream rather than processing unnecessary detail.
- If simpler changes are not enough, reduce OBS output resolution or FPS, then check picture smoothness and stream health again.
These adjustments can affect image detail, motion smoothness, or scene appearance. OBS identifies encoder, output resolution, FPS, and scene complexity as interacting workload factors; it does not promise a fixed percentage of CPU savings. See Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

5. Keep YouTube stream settings within its guidance
CPU tuning should not come at the expense of a stable, watchable stream. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its suggested bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table for your actual output rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
6. Test before leaving a loop running
- Play several minutes of representative video, including motion and audio.
- Check OBS stats and logs for dropped or skipped frames and signs of rendering or encoding lag.
- Check YouTube stream health while the test is running.
- Adjust one setting at a time, then repeat the same test to compare the result.
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health. OBS’s Quick Start Guide also describes using the Auto-Configuration Wizard to find settings suited to the computer and testing the setup.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| CPU stays high after enabling a hardware encoder | Confirm the selected encoder in Settings → Output; playback decoding and scene sources may still use resources. | Check the OBS log, try compatible hardware decoding for Media Source, and simplify sources or filters. |
| Hardware encoder is missing | The encoder depends on the GPU, operating system, and driver support. | Check OBS’s hardware-encoding compatibility guidance. Do not assume a named option is available on every system. |
| VLC playlist will not work in OBS | VLC may be missing or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC and match 64-bit OBS with 64-bit VLC; confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. |
| Frames are dropped or skipped despite acceptable CPU readings | Rendering or encoding lag may reflect GPU or whole-scene workload, not CPU alone. | Simplify the scene, reduce costly filters, and retest while monitoring OBS stats and YouTube stream health. |
| Picture quality or motion worsens after lowering settings | Output resolution, FPS, bitrate, codec, and encoder quality interact. | Restore the last acceptable setting and tune one variable at a time against YouTube’s current guidance. |
When a hardware upgrade is worth considering
Consider a GPU with a compatible hardware video encoder only if your existing hardware lacks a suitable encoder or configuration changes cannot handle the stream you need. Check compatibility with your operating system and OBS before buying. OBS system requirements alone do not guarantee that a particular computer can handle a specific workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing, then start your free day.
