Route the station’s clean program audio from its playout system into an encoder, pair it with a visual, and send the encoded stream to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The exact audio connection depends on the playout computer, operating system, and existing mixer or interface. Before announcing the stream, run a supervised end-to-end test and confirm the station has rights for the YouTube transmission and any replay.
Choose the audio path before configuring YouTube
The signal chain is playout audio → capture or routing → encoder with a visual → YouTube Live. Use a direct program feed where possible rather than recording sound from room speakers. First establish what the playout system outputs, where the encoder will run, and whether the station already has a console or interface feed.
Playout software and encoder on the same Windows computer
OBS may be able to capture audio from an application on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS documents this as a beta source. Its guide advises disabling global Desktop Audio when using application audio capture to avoid capturing the same sound twice. Confirm the application source is receiving the intended playout output, not unrelated system audio.
Playout system on a separate computer, or another operating system
Route the playout system’s output to an audio input the encoder can use, or take a suitable program output from the existing console or interface. The right connection depends on connector type, signal level, channel count, operating-system support, and drivers. Check those details before buying equipment. In OBS, adding an audio input/output source while also selecting that same device globally can cause echo; choose one capture route and monitor it.

Compare the practical options
| Route | Best fit | Check before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Application audio capture | Playout software and OBS on a supported Windows computer | Windows version, OBS source support, and whether Desktop Audio is disabled to prevent duplication |
| Existing console or interface output | The station already has a dedicated program/broadcast feed and a compatible input for the encoder | Connector, level, channels, monitoring path, and duplicate device selection |
| New external audio interface | A genuine connection gap exists between the playout output and a separate encoder computer | Compatibility, connectors, signal level, OS and drivers; no single model is established as universally suitable |
Create and configure the YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the scheduled broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a private credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- Set up the encoder. In OBS or another encoder, select the intended program-audio source and add a visual, such as a station-branded still or a program view. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings.
- Select a supported ingest protocol. YouTube describes RTMP as a typical server option. HLS is also available when the encoder supports it and is configured compatibly; YouTube says HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion. Choose based on encoder support and operational needs, not on an assumption that the playout software itself sends a YouTube-ready feed.
- Preview and monitor. Check Live Control Room for the incoming feed. Listen for clean program audio, confirm it is not doubled, and make sure the visual is correct. Use YouTube’s go-live control when the scheduled workflow calls for it.
- Plan the end of the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Decide ahead of time whether an archive is wanted and authorized, then end the session deliberately using the station’s workflow.
Clear rights for the live video and any archive
Permission to broadcast a program over the air—or to run an existing web-audio stream—does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube live video simulcast or retained replay. Have the station’s rights administrator or counsel verify the actual grants and restrictions for the YouTube transmission, relevant territories, and archive, including rights in both music and other third-party material.
YouTube Help, in “Copyright issues with live streams,” says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube detects a match, it may display a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. YouTube also says a rights owner may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after the live broadcast. A stream going through successfully, or receiving no immediate claim, is not proof that the station’s rights are cleared.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s discussion of sections 112 and 114 describes statutory provisions concerning certain sound-recording transmissions and ephemeral recordings. College Broadcasters, Inc. discusses webcasting rights for musical compositions and sound recordings and college-station licensing. These U.S.-oriented sources are context, not a determination that a particular station’s existing licenses cover YouTube; rules and licenses can differ by jurisdiction.
Buy capture hardware only if the signal path needs it
A USB audio interface can bridge a playout output to a separate encoder computer, but it is not a universal requirement. A station with an existing interface or console feed, supported application capture, or a directly compatible digital route may need no additional hardware. Confirm the specific input and output, signal level, channel needs, operating system, and driver support before purchasing. No particular brand or model is established as suitable for every station.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the station’s goal is continuous YouTube playback of uploaded recordings rather than a live microphone or studio performance, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not take a live camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Rights clearance still applies to the content and any YouTube archive.
Troubleshoot before the next scheduled broadcast
- No audio in Live Control Room: Confirm the encoder has selected the actual playout application or input device, verify the mixer/interface routing, and check that the source is receiving signal before going live.
- Echo or doubled audio: Check for the same device selected both as an OBS source and global audio device. With application capture on supported Windows, disable global Desktop Audio as OBS advises.
- Wrong or intermittent audio: Recheck the selected program output and connection path; avoid relying on room speakers when a direct feed is available. Confirm the signal level and channel routing are appropriate for the receiving input.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Verify the stream URL and key copied from the selected Live Control Room stream, and confirm the encoder is configured for a protocol YouTube and the encoder both support.
- Live streaming is not yet available: If this is the channel’s first enablement, allow up to 24 hours according to YouTube.
- Stream interrupted or terminated: Check Live Control Room notices and investigate a possible third-party content match. Resolve rights and any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner; changing the cable or encoder will not resolve a rights issue.
- Replay unavailable or claimed: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but the archive can receive a Content ID claim after the event. Review archive settings and the station’s replay permissions.
Run a supervised end-to-end test
Before promoting the stream, test the complete chain with the real playout output, encoder, visual, and YouTube destination. Confirm the incoming feed in Live Control Room, listen for clean unduplicated audio, verify the intended visual, and rehearse the station’s start and end procedure. The test should also establish who can access the stream key and who is responsible for rights and archive decisions.
