YouTube does not have a special “rerun” test mode: the same encoder workflow applies whether you are rebroadcasting gameplay or prerecorded gaming content.
Choose a private or unlisted test
Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio and set its visibility to Private if access should be tightly limited. Choose Unlisted if you need to share the watch link with a trusted reviewer. YouTube offers both settings for encoder streams; check the stream’s visibility and, if someone else will review it, test access from that person’s account. Manage live stream settings
Connect the encoder and inspect the preview
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and set its visibility to Private or Unlisted.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a password; do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and wait for the stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Review the preview before selecting Go live.
- Check the Live Control Room for stream-health warnings or error messages. YouTube’s encoder workflow and testing guidance are described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.
Test the parts viewers will actually experience
Run a representative stretch of the rerun, not just a static opening screen. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. For a gaming stream, also check the overlay as a practical part of the picture.
- Picture and motion: Confirm the game image is visible, the intended resolution and frame rate are being sent, motion looks acceptable, and overlays are positioned and readable.
- Sound: Listen for game audio, voice, and any other planned audio. Check that nothing is missing, distorted, or unexpectedly dominant.
- Live preview and health: Watch the Live Control Room preview and address any health warnings or errors before the public event.
- Viewer playback: Open the YouTube watch page and confirm the stream plays as expected. Check the channel page or a mobile device too if those are important ways your audience will find or watch it.

Check encoder settings and upload capacity
The appropriate bitrate depends on your output resolution and frame rate; use YouTube’s current resolution-specific recommendations rather than choosing a bitrate in isolation. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.
Run an upload speed test and leave headroom for the stream and other network use. YouTube recommends about 20% more upload bandwidth than the total outgoing stream bitrate and notes that shared network use can reduce the capacity available to your encoder. Allow enough time, then verify the recording
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the planned broadcast. Use that lead time to catch connection, picture, or sound problems while there is still time to fix them. When the test is complete, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream through the YouTube workflow.
Do not assume the archive is present just because the test appeared live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and previous, current, and upcoming streams appear in the Studio Live tab. Check the actual Studio archive. Fix common test failures before the public broadcast
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, then check the encoder connection and the Live Control Room for an error message.
- Stream health reports a problem: Check available upload capacity and competing network use. Reduce the encoder’s bitrate or other load if needed, and test again with the intended output settings.
- Picture, motion, or overlays look wrong: Check the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate, then inspect a moving gameplay segment in the preview and on the watch page.
- Audio is missing or unbalanced: Check the encoder’s selected audio source and levels, then listen to playback on the watch page rather than relying only on the encoder meter.
- A reviewer cannot open the test: Recheck whether the stream is Private or Unlisted. If sharing access is needed, Unlisted may be more convenient; verify the link using the intended reviewer account.
- The recording is missing or incomplete: Inspect the stream in Studio’s Live tab and verify the local recording separately, if one was made, before relying on either copy.
