Yes, in principle: an Indian temple trust can earn YouTube revenue from a 24/7 aarti stream if its channel qualifies for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), passes YouTube’s channel-wide review, and continues to meet its policies. Religious subject matter alone does not rule a stream out, but continuous looping, copied footage, uncleared music, or little original value can create monetization risks. Whether the trust’s YouTube income is tax-exempt is a separate question that depends on its legal and accounting circumstances.
What YouTube monetization can mean for a temple stream
For an eligible channel, YouTube documents advertising and live fan-funding features as potential revenue routes. These are platform features, not guaranteed earnings: the channel must first be accepted into YPP, and the availability and delivery of individual ads are not assured. YouTube says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance describes the available ad controls and features.
A stream may also let viewers support the channel through Super Chat, Super Stickers, or channel memberships if those features are available to the channel and enabled. Do not treat donations made through a separate route as automatically equivalent to YouTube advertising income for tax or GST purposes.
YPP eligibility in India
YouTube lists India among the countries where creators can join YPP. Under the criteria checked in 2026, the channel must reach either 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. These are application thresholds, not an acceptance or revenue guarantee. YouTube’s YPP eligibility guidance sets out the current requirements.

Other application conditions
- The channel must comply with YouTube’s channel monetization policies and have no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- Two-step verification and access to YouTube advanced features are required.
- The channel needs an AdSense for YouTube account linked as part of signup.
- YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. Reaching the numerical thresholds only permits an application; it does not mean the channel has been approved. See YouTube’s monetization policies and YPP availability by country.
Which livestream watch hours count
A public livestream can contribute to the public watch-hour threshold if it remains public and is converted to video on demand. Unlisted or deleted streams, and streams that are not converted to VOD, do not count under the cited YPP guidance. Check YouTube’s current eligibility page before relying on a stream’s hours.
Does a 24/7 aarti stream meet originality rules?
There is no categorical ban on aarti or religious streams in the cited YouTube monetization policy. The important issue is what the channel broadcasts and whether its content offers distinct value. YouTube describes its aim this way: “This policy makes sure monetized content offers viewers something appealing and interesting to watch.” Its July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under the “inauthentic content” policy; YouTube said such content was already ineligible under existing rules. Review applies to the channel overall, not just one livestream.

Make the stream recognizably the trust’s own
- Use a live camera feed of the ceremony that the trust controls rather than endlessly replaying someone else’s recording.
- Keep the feed meaningful to viewers: a real ongoing ceremony, clear context, and any original presentation the trust can provide are easier to distinguish from a template loop with little added value.
- Retain written permissions and records for footage, music, recordings, and other material used in the stream.
- Do not assume that a video being religious, publicly viewable, or already online makes its copyright use permissible.
YouTube notes that ads may appear on material when a rights holder places them. An ad appearing on the stream does not prove that the temple channel has joined YPP or is receiving a share of that revenue. YouTube’s policy page explains channel-level monetization review.
Advertising choices and the ceremony experience
When live monetization is enabled, YouTube automatically enables pre-roll and display ads; mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. Ads can interrupt viewing, and not every slot serves an ad. For aarti, consider the ceremony’s rhythm before enabling mid-rolls: YouTube lets the channel delay automatic mid-rolls around important moments. The trust should decide whether possible additional ad opportunities are worth the risk of interrupting a central ritual.

YouTube reported that creators who enabled automatic live mid-roll ads had more than 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s aggregate comparison, not a forecast for a temple channel or a guarantee of uplift. The live monetization guide describes controls; the reported comparison should not be treated as an individualized revenue estimate.
Tax, donations, and GST are separate questions
Income tax and Section 11
The Income Tax Department says Section 11 can exempt income derived from property held under trust wholly for charitable or religious purposes to the extent that income is applied to those purposes in India, subject to statutory conditions. It also says Section 12AB registration is mandatory to claim the Section 11 exemption. The Department’s general guidance says: “Trust formed for charitable or religious purposes which are not intended to do commercial activities are allowed various benefits under the Income-Tax Act, inter-alia, exemption under section 11.” This is general guidance, not a ruling on a particular trust’s YouTube receipts. The trust deed, registration, accounts, source of income, and use of funds matter. See the Income Tax Department’s guidance for charitable and religious trusts.

Do not promise donors a Section 80G deduction
A donation to a temple is not automatically deductible under Section 80G. Deductibility depends on the institution’s current approval and statutory conditions, including recordkeeping and restrictions concerning institutions expressed to benefit a particular religious community or caste. The law deals separately with some specifically notified donations for temple renovation or repair; that is not a blanket deduction for all temple donations or stream contributions. Confirm current approval and eligibility before making any donor-facing tax claim. See Income Tax Department information on deductions.
GST treatment of donations and ad receipts
CBIC’s Circular No. 116/35/2019-GST says a donation acknowledgement that expresses gratitude and public recognition, without advertising or promoting the donor’s business, is not a service supplied for consideration. The circular states: “Therefore, there is no GST liability on such consideration.” That statement addresses the described donation acknowledgement; it should not be extended to YouTube advertising income. CBIC’s separate GST material lists exemptions for conducting a religious ceremony and specified services connected with qualifying religious places, but the cited materials do not settle the classification of this trust’s YouTube ad receipts, registration requirement, or place-of-supply treatment. The trust should obtain advice based on its state, turnover, contract, and accounting facts. See CBIC Circular No. 116/35/2019-GST and CBIC’s GST FAQ material.

How to start the stream
YouTube supports livestreaming with a webcam, mobile device, or encoder. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—is optional, not a monetization requirement. It is useful when the trust needs external audio/video equipment or a more advanced production. YouTube’s guide includes examples such as AJA HELO Plus and software/services with continuous-stream capabilities; this does not establish a requirement to use any particular product. - Prepare the channel. Check YPP availability and requirements, enable two-step verification, confirm advanced features access, and make sure the channel has no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- Plan a rights-cleared feed. Use a camera and audio feed controlled by the trust. Clear any music, recordings, and other copyrighted material, and keep permission records.
- Choose a streaming method. Use YouTube’s webcam or mobile flow for a straightforward setup, or an encoder if the production requires external hardware or more control. Follow the setup prompts in YouTube Studio and protect the stream key; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Test before relying on a continuous broadcast. Check picture, sound, network stability, and the public viewing experience. Confirm that the planned stream will remain public and be converted to VOD if its watch hours are needed for YPP eligibility.
- Apply when eligible and review monetization settings. After acceptance, choose whether to enable live ads and fan-funding features. Decide how mid-roll timing fits the ceremony rather than assuming ads are guaranteed or harmless to the viewing experience.
