Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

These are separate outputs: an OBS overlay does not update the title shown by radio players, and a server metadata update does not automatically put text on a video. The exact setup depends on your streaming server, encoder or playout software, and whether you want the name in an audio player, on the video image, or both.
Choose where the track name should appear
- In audio players or stream directories: your playout software or encoder sends each track change to the streaming server as metadata.
- On the video image: a reader obtains the current title and artist, writes formatted text to a file, and OBS displays that file in a text source.
- In both places: configure both paths. They may use the same source of track information, but neither display updates the other automatically.
There is no special Gurbani metadata standard in the documentation cited here. Use the title and artist or other labels provided by your trusted playlist or metadata source; do not guess a shabad, raagi, or transliteration when information is missing.
Put Now Playing metadata in an Icecast audio stream
1. Identify the server, mount, and metadata source
Find out whether your stream uses Icecast or SHOUTcast, identify the active mount, and check whether your playout or encoder application already sends track changes. The application must know the correct current title before it can pass it on. If it already sends metadata, check the stream in a compatible player and inspect Icecast status data to confirm that titles change when the playlist advances.
2. Verify Icecast status using its JSON endpoint
Icecast documents /status-json.xsl as a basic JSON statistics endpoint from version 2.4.0 onward. The response can include runtime stream information, such as example title and artist fields, but fields can vary by stream type and runtime. Use your server’s host and endpoint; availability and exact response depend on your installation. Icecast advises against treating its HTML statistics page as a stable API, recommending JSON, raw XML, or custom XSLT instead. Read Icecast’s Server Statistics documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. If needed, send a metadata update through your host
If the encoder does not send title changes, use its metadata-update feature or a metadata endpoint supported by your hosting provider. An Icecast admin update generally requires an active mount, an update action, a metadata string, and suitable credentials. The request must encode the metadata correctly; check the provider’s instructions for URL encoding and UTF-8 handling.
Endpoint paths and authentication details are host-specific. SharpStream’s example documents a mount-level HTTP metadata request and its requirements, but those details are not universal: see SharpStream’s metadata endpoint instructions. Keep admin credentials private. Do not put them in browser-visible overlay code, public pages, or files accessible to viewers.

4. For occasional manual updates, enter each change
Some playout systems offer a manual Now Playing field. SoundCast’s manual, for example, describes entering artist and title and sending them immediately to Icecast. A manual update must be repeated when the program changes, so it is not a substitute for track-by-track automation on an unattended playlist. See the SoundCast user manual.
Show the changing track name in OBS
1. Confirm that a reader can see the current track
Choose a source that actually exposes the playing item’s metadata: for example, your media player, Icecast status data, or a playout system’s output. A text overlay cannot infer a correct title if its source does not provide one. Metadata handling also depends on stream format and application support: What’s Now Playing says its reader can read tags carried by Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Opus, while MP3 and other formats require separately sent metadata for that reader. Check its Icecast input guidance and your own software’s compatibility.

2. Write formatted metadata to a text file
Use a compatible reader or plugin to format the available fields and write them to a text file. Tuna’s documentation describes file outputs and formatting placeholders such as {artists} - {title}. Which fields appear depends on the selected source; if a source does not provide an artist, the output may not contain one. The reader or plugin also needs to keep running for updates to continue. See the Tuna documentation.
3. Add the file as an OBS text source
- In OBS, open the scene that carries your live stream and add a text source.
- Configure the text source to read from the file your metadata reader writes; choose the corresponding text-source option available in your OBS version and operating system.
- Position and style the text so it remains readable without obscuring important video content.
- Start the reader, play a track with known metadata, and confirm that the overlay changes when the item changes.
Keep a neutral fallback such as “Live Gurbani stream” for missing metadata. Do not display a guessed title or treat audio recognition as authoritative attribution without verifying it.

Choose automation, manual updates, or a metadata format
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder or playout automation | Unattended playlists that need a title for every track change | Depends on the application knowing the right title and sending it in a format the server accepts. |
| Manual server update | Occasional changes made by an operator | Each change requires action; a missed update leaves the previous title displayed. |
| Ogg tags read by a compatible tool | Setups where the stream format and reader support the tags | Support is not universal; the reader’s documentation distinguishes Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Opus from MP3 and other formats. |
| Separate authenticated metadata endpoint | A host-supported way to update a live mount when the encoder does not send titles | Requires correct mount, request encoding, and private credentials; endpoint details vary by host. |
Whichever path you choose, test the actual destination: verify server metadata in a player or status response for audio, and verify the text source in the OBS scene for on-screen display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a title that does not change
- Check the source information: does the playout application show the correct current title? If not, fix its playlist or metadata first.
- Check how the title is sent: does the encoder send changes, or does your host require a separate update endpoint?
- Check the mount: confirm that the update targets the active stream mount, not another mount or an inactive stream.
- Check the request: verify the host’s required credentials, action, URL encoding, and character handling. Never expose admin credentials while testing.
- Check the server response: see whether Icecast status data or a compatible player shows the new title. If it does not, the issue is upstream of OBS.
- Check the OBS reader and file: confirm the reader is running, can access metadata from the selected source, writes to the expected file, and that the OBS text source reads that same file and refreshes.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal also includes keeping a pre-recorded YouTube video stream online around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. StreamNeo does not replace the metadata setup above, so configure track names in your playout and display path as needed.
