For a typical stereo podcast sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, set the encoder to AAC or MP3 audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for the stream and a two-second keyframe interval. Those settings govern delivery to YouTube; they cannot repair noisy, distorted, or poorly balanced audio in the source mix. Rehearse with representative audio, then watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while live.
Set the live encoder for stereo podcast audio
YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions gives these recommendations for live stereo audio over RTMP/RTMPS:
| Setting | Recommended value or choice |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for a secure connection |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds |
The sample-rate and bitrate figures here are YouTube’s live recommendations for stereo, not universal settings for every podcast file or recording application. Keep the production channel layout in mind: a conventional two-channel podcast is stereo, and selecting 5.1 settings does not improve it.
Use a clean source mix before encoding
Encoding settings are the final delivery choices, not audio repair tools. Start with the actual program mix you intend viewers to hear, including microphones, playback, and any other sound sources. Check that the correct input or mix is routed to the encoder and listen to a test capture or rehearsal. YouTube’s live guidance does not specify podcast loudness targets, peak ceilings, EQ or compression settings, or a limiter configuration, so there is no platform-specific target for those to copy from these recommendations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s encoder workflow can use external audio and video hardware. An audio interface may be useful if your computer-based chain needs to connect an XLR microphone, but YouTube does not require an interface or claim that buying one by itself improves audio quality.
Keep live-stream settings separate from upload settings
A prerecorded podcast uploaded as a video and a podcast transmitted as a live stream use different YouTube encoding guidance. YouTube’s YouTube recommended upload encoding settings page lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz, and recommends 384 Kbps for stereo uploads. Those are upload recommendations; for live stereo RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, the live encoder page recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.

Do not change a live encoder to the upload figures on the assumption that they are better live settings. Choose the settings for the workflow you are actually using.
Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS for the workflow
For a standard stereo podcast without an HLS-specific requirement, use the protocol supported by your encoder workflow rather than switching protocols solely in expectation of better audio. YouTube does not say that RTMP/RTMPS or HLS makes an otherwise identical podcast mix sound better.

| Workflow | Audio options and requirements | Latency context |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube lists AAC or MP3. RTMP/RTMPS supports 5.1 only with AAC. | YouTube describes RTMP as sending video continuously. |
| HLS | YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. HLS also requires a transport-stream segment format and a rolling playlist, among other settings. | YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than continuously as RTMP does. |
If the show is actually produced in 5.1, match the encoder and protocol to that channel layout. YouTube’s live recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, and 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1; over RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 is supported only with AAC. Do not use the 5.1 figures for an ordinary stereo mix.
Rehearse and monitor the live program
- Confirm the outgoing mix. Check that the encoder receives the intended podcast mix, not an unintended device or input.
- Apply the live settings. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS, choose AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps; set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Run a representative rehearsal. Include speech and production activity similar to the real event, rather than checking only silence or a static opening screen. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the broadcast. Look for warnings and confirm that the transmitted audio is present and behaving as expected.
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That helps provide playback variants; it does not restore detail lost in a poor source recording or correct problems in the mix.

Troubleshoot common audio-encoding problems
- Audio is missing: Verify the encoder’s selected audio input or mix and confirm the intended source is active. Rehearse the complete signal path before going live.
- The stream produces warnings or unstable delivery: Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify that the live encoder is using the recommended CBR mode and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not more than four seconds.
- Audio sounds wrong even though the stream is connected: Check the source mix and routing, then listen to a representative rehearsal. The recommended codec, sample rate, and bitrate do not fix problems already present in the incoming audio.
- A stereo show was configured as 5.1: Set the encoder to match the actual production layout. Use YouTube’s stereo live recommendations unless the program was made as 5.1.
- Upload settings were copied into a live encoder: Restore the live stereo recommendations—44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps—rather than treating the prerecorded-upload page’s 48 kHz and 384 Kbps recommendations as live targets.
