How to Keep a Podcast Stream Running on an Old Windows PC

A practical guide to using OBS on an older Windows PC for podcast audio, with testing, recovery, troubleshooting, Windows support considerations, and a cloud option for prerecorded YouTube video streams.

You can keep an OBS-based podcast stream running from an older Windows PC by using conservative audio settings, preventing the computer from sleeping, and testing automatic reconnect and restart behavior before leaving it unattended. But the PC remains a single point of failure: a power cut, Windows or OBS crash, internet outage, or destination-service problem can still interrupt the stream. If your podcast is already hosted or streamed by another service, first check whether that service can run the stream without your PC; OBS is only needed when this computer is the source sending audio to the destination.

First, identify what is actually sending the podcast

“Podcast stream” can mean a live audio broadcast, a playlist of recorded episodes, or a stream provided by a hosting service. The right setup depends on which one you have. Before changing the PC, identify the destination platform, whether it accepts your intended audio source and streaming method, and whether the audio comes from a microphone or mixer, a local playlist, or a hosted service.

  • PC-originated live audio: OBS Studio can send audio from the PC to a compatible streaming destination.
  • Local recordings: OBS may be able to capture audio played on the PC, but verify the mix and destination behavior in a supervised test.
  • Already-hosted stream: If the hosting service itself delivers the stream, OBS may not be necessary. Follow that service’s instructions rather than assuming the PC must stay on.

The exact destination and source are unspecified here, so there is no universal server address, stream key path, or bitrate that applies to every podcast platform.

Check whether the old PC is a reasonable streaming host

Confirm Windows and graphics compatibility

OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements, but compatibility alone does not mean a machine can handle a particular workload. OBS notes: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU load depends on the encoder, output settings, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.

Consider Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended regular support for Windows 10 Home and Pro on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to function, but those editions no longer receive regular security updates. Before keeping an always-connected Windows 10 PC online, check Microsoft’s current guidance for upgrade eligibility or any applicable extended-update options: Windows 10 Home and Pro lifecycle and Windows 10 end-of-support information.

Set up OBS for a supervised test

  1. Install OBS from its official site and verify which Windows version is installed. Record the PC’s hardware details so you can distinguish an application issue from a machine that cannot sustain the chosen workload.
  2. Open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its recommendations as a starting point; OBS says the wizard takes hardware and network conditions into account. The result is not a guarantee that the stream will remain stable.
  3. Configure the destination. In Settings → Stream, select the matching service if it is listed. If the destination requires a custom server, enter its server details and stream key as instructed by that service. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  4. Set a conservative audio output. Choose an audio bitrate supported by the destination and sustainable over the connection. OBS’s overview mentions around 160 kbps as a typical streaming-audio setting, with lower rates possible when upload capacity is limited. This is a starting reference, not a universal requirement; use the destination’s current guidance if it specifies a value.
  5. Check audio input and meters. Play the intended source and look at the Audio Mixer. If the meters do not move, open Settings → Audio and check the selected devices. Listen for clipping, silence, imbalance, and unwanted system sounds.
  6. Run a short test before relying on it. Make a test stream or recording, then listen at the receiving end. Confirm that the right source is audible, the level is acceptable, and the destination receives it as expected. OBS recommends testing before a first relied-upon stream; see its Quick Start Guide.

Reduce avoidable interruptions

Keep the PC awake and powered

Set Windows power behavior so the PC does not sleep during the planned broadcast, and use stable power and network access. Windows menus vary by version, so check the settings on the installed edition rather than relying on a path that may not match your machine. If the PC or router loses power, OBS cannot keep sending audio.

Enable OBS reconnect and test recovery

In OBS’s Advanced settings, configure automatic reconnect. It can help when a connection drops briefly, but it is not a guarantee against a computer crash, prolonged internet outage, or a problem at the receiving service. Review the OBS Studio Overview Guide for the reconnect option.

If the goal is for OBS to begin streaming when it is launched after a reboot, OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For a Windows Task Scheduler or other automated launch, set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as described in the OBS Launch Parameters documentation. Supervise a restart test before depending on automation: starting OBS is not the same as confirming that the correct source, stream key, audio, and destination are working.

Troubleshoot silence, interruptions, and dropped frames

Symptom What to check Practical next step
No audio at the destination Audio Mixer meters, selected devices in Settings → Audio, and whether the intended source is playing. Correct the audio device or source, then make another short test and listen at the destination.
OBS disconnects or reconnects repeatedly Whether the connection is stable, whether the destination is available, and whether the selected service/server details are correct. Verify the destination configuration, test the network, and use automatic reconnect as a recovery aid—not as a substitute for fixing a persistent fault.
Dropped frames OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Lower bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, try another ingest server if the service offers one, and investigate the VPN or security software, router/modem, network adapter, and cables. OBS lists faulty network hardware, including cables, as a possible cause. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Stream stops after a reboot Whether OBS launched, whether the automated launch uses the correct working directory, and whether the stream actually started with the intended source. Review the launch parameter and Task Scheduler working directory, then conduct a supervised reboot test and confirm delivery at the destination.
PC slows down or cannot sustain the stream Whether the workload is within the machine’s capability; encoding and scene complexity affect CPU demands. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point and reduce output demands. If stability remains poor, the PC may not be suitable for this job.

Or let it run in the cloud

If what you want is a prerecorded video playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than a microphone or live audio feed sent from the PC, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera or stream to destinations other than YouTube. A cloud stream does not depend on your home PC staying on, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. If your podcast is audio-only or delivered through a different platform, confirm that a YouTube video stream meets your needs before choosing this route. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
