The available project documentation supports both; it does not establish that either is faster or more reliable.
What runs the 24/7 stream
The Linux distribution is the foundation, not the streaming system itself. In a typical internet-radio setup, Liquidsoap generates and encodes the audio feed, then sends it to Icecast, which relays it to listeners from a mount point. Liquidsoap can send the feed whether or not anyone is connected, and an Icecast server can host multiple streams.
This is a fit for a home server running the streaming processes directly. If the machine is instead a virtualization host, container platform, NAS appliance, or an existing server with its own deployment constraints, those may affect the best installation approach.

For a straightforward home server, favor the maintained distribution you can update and administer confidently. Debian is the default recommendation because the documented components support it; Ubuntu Server is similarly practical when it better matches your experience or documentation preference.

Set up continuous operation
A stream that must survive a logout, reboot, or process failure should not depend on an open terminal. Liquidsoap’s production guidance recommends running it in the foreground under a service manager such as systemd on Linux. Its example service waits for network availability, runs as a dedicated liquidsoap user, restarts the program, and can be enabled at boot with systemctl enable --now radio. - Install for your distribution and architecture. Use the current Debian or Ubuntu installation instructions and check package availability for the host’s architecture. Liquidsoap’s documented Debian/Ubuntu packages include amd64 and arm64 builds; package channels and versions can change. Check the installation page.
- Configure Liquidsoap to generate the audio and send it to Icecast. The precise script depends on the source files, formats, playlist behavior, and metadata you want; those details cannot be inferred from the distribution choice. Consult the Liquidsoap quickstart and Icecast streaming documentation.
- Validate the script before a restart. Run
liquidsoap --checkto catch script errors before deploying a change, as described in the production documentation. - Run it as a service and enable boot startup. Follow the production service pattern: use a dedicated account, wait for network availability, configure restart behavior, and enable the service with
systemctl enable --now radioif using the documented example service name. Adapt service and account names to your installation. - Verify both ends. Confirm that Liquidsoap is sending the feed and that Icecast exposes the intended mount point to listeners. A running Linux service alone does not prove the audio source, connection, or listener endpoint is configured correctly.
Protect the public-facing Icecast setup
Do not deploy example credentials. Liquidsoap’s quickstart warns users to change Icecast’s example passwords when the server is publicly accessible; treat the source password as a secret. The cited guidance is not a complete security-hardening plan, so determine suitable firewall rules, TLS termination, update practices, and access controls for your deployment using current documentation.

What this choice does not tell you
The distribution recommendation does not determine how much CPU, memory, disk space, or upload bandwidth your particular stream needs, nor how many listeners a home connection can serve. The cited project documentation does not establish resource requirements, listener capacity, uptime rates, or a performance comparison between Debian and Ubuntu. Those depend on the audio, configuration, host, and network. Likewise, the audio source, file formats, playlist design, and metadata requirements need to be decided separately.
