Peak normalization alone does not make clips sound equally loud. For quiet ambience, start with simple gain changes; use limiting sparingly when peaks prevent a useful adjustment.
Why peak normalization does not make videos sound equally loud
Peak normalization adjusts clips according to their highest sample or peak. Two files can have similar peaks but very different average perceived loudness. Integrated loudness, measured in LUFS, is more useful for comparing the overall level of complete programs; peak level remains a separate safety check. The European Broadcasting Union’s EBU Tech 3343 describes the shift from peak normalization toward loudness normalization, while its R 128 recommendation defines loudness and peak descriptors.
Loudness matching does not mean flattening every clip’s dynamics. Raising a quiet recording can push its peaks too high, and limiting those peaks can change the sound. For relaxation programming, preserve the natural movement of rain, wind, water, or music unless a measured and audible mismatch calls for correction.
Choose a target for your stream’s context
There is no single LUFS target established here for every relaxation livestream. The right choice depends on the destination platform’s ingest requirements, the intended listening experience, and whether you are matching separate assets or measuring a continuous program. Select a target for the context, document it, and use it consistently for comparable videos.

| Reference | Published figure and context | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| EBU R 128, version 5.0 | -23 LUFS average programme loudness; European Broadcasting Union, 2023. Recommendation. | A broadcast reference, not a universal internet livestream setting. |
| AES TD1008, version 3.13 | -16 LUFS for track normalization in the specified music-streaming context, including automatically assembled streams. Publication date is not established in the reviewed PDF excerpt. Document. | A music-streaming context; do not assume it governs every platform or ambience program. |
| Audacity manual | -23 LUFS is the Loudness Normalization effect’s default; the manual says streaming targets are usually a few LU higher than broadcast. Manual. | A software default and general note, not a target tailored to your stream. |
These values describe different contexts, not interchangeable instructions. Until you know the destination platform’s live-stream requirements, do not present a particular LUFS target or true-peak ceiling as mandatory.
Normalize a library of videos step by step
-
Group videos by their intended role
Decide whether all clips should feel consistent or whether some are deliberately quieter—for example, sleep ambience followed by a brighter nature segment. Keep intentional contrast; compare like with like.
-
Measure each complete asset
Use an integrated loudness meter with the same measurement method for every file. Record each video’s integrated LUFS and true-peak reading. AES TD1008 describes measuring the full audio length for integrated loudness and correcting amplitude toward a selected target.

-
Calculate the initial gain adjustment
Subtract the measured LUFS from your chosen target. For example, a file measured at -27 LUFS needs an initial +4 dB adjustment to reach a chosen target of -23 LUFS. This is arithmetic, not a prescribed target for relaxation streams. Re-measure after processing.

Check true peaks before applying the gain
If raising a quiet file makes its peaks unsafe, do not force it to the target without listening. Consider a lower shared target or gentle peak limiting, then audition transients and quiet passages. AES cautions that upward normalization may require limiting and that limiting can alter content; see its TD1008 document.
-
Audition clip boundaries in sequence
Listen to each opening and ending against its neighboring videos. A whole-file integrated measurement can conceal a long quiet introduction or a sudden transition jump. A short-term loudness meter can help locate the moment, but there is no established short-term target here for relaxation streams; make the final decision by listening in context.

Use the stream bus as a restrained safety stage
Monitor the combined output for overload. A global real-time processor can help manage long-term level, but it cannot predict later material and may override intended dynamic changes. Keep any limiter’s action light, and listen for pumping, level movement, noise becoming prominent, or ambience swelling during quiet passages.
-
Check the encoded output and playback
Review a representative stream output after encoding, as well as playback on the devices your audience is likely to use. Encoding, platform processing, and playback controls can affect what listeners hear; none substitutes for matching your source assets.

Use Audacity without changing stereo balance
Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect measures perceived loudness in LUFS and defaults to -23 LUFS. Treat that value as the software default, not a relaxation-stream specification. For ordinary stereo material, do not normalize the left and right channels independently: the Audacity manual warns that doing so can change stereo balance. See the Loudness Normalization manual for the control’s current behavior.

Do not rely on YouTube’s viewer volume control
YouTube’s Stable volume is a viewer-side playback control. YouTube Help says, “Stable volume balances the range between quiet and loud, continuously adjusting volume levels to reduce variations in sound.” It is enabled by default on eligible videos, but is not available for all videos and is off for YouTube Music and official music videos. The feature does not establish a creator-side loudness target for an outgoing livestream. See YouTube Help: Control video volume on your device.
Troubleshoot uneven or unpleasant playback
- Clips have similar peaks but still sound different: compare their integrated LUFS readings and use consistent gain adjustments; peak normalization is not perceived-loudness matching.
- A quiet clip clips after you raise it: check true peaks, reduce the shared target, or use gentle limiting only after auditioning its effect.
- The stream pumps or quiet sections swell: reduce real-time processing. A global processor can react in ways that override the intended dynamics of later material.
- One transition still jumps in level: inspect and audition the opening and ending of the neighboring files. Whole-file averages can hide local differences.
- Stereo ambience shifts left or right: check whether stereo channels were normalized separately and restore linked stereo processing where needed.
- The stream sounds different from the source files: compare the encoded output and representative playback; viewer controls and downstream playback can alter perceived level.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your normalized videos are ready, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Your loudness decisions still belong in the prepared files: cloud playback does not replace measuring and matching them. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
