To fade gently between meditation videos in OBS, put each clip in its own scene, then choose Fade in the Scene Transitions dock and adjust its duration. A playlist can sequence clips, but OBS documents playlist playback and scene transitions as separate controls; it does not say that advancing to the next playlist item automatically crossfades.
Set up a fade between separate video scenes
- Create a scene for each video or segment. In OBS, add scenes for the clips you want to switch between. Scenes and their sources define what appears in the stream.
- Add a clip to each scene. In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Select the video file in its properties. OBS documentation lists formats including
.mp4,.ts,.mov,.flv,.mkv,.avi,.gif, and.webm. OBS Media Sources lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support; available formats and interface details can vary by installed version. - Choose the transition. In Scene Transitions, select Fade. OBS says Fade and Cut are available from first launch and that a transition’s duration can be changed. There is no official meditation-specific duration: choose one that suits the pace of your material, then preview it.
- Set each clip’s playback behavior. Open the Media Source properties and decide whether to enable Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active. Enable Show nothing when playback ends if the clip should disappear at its end instead of holding on its last frame. These controls affect playback, not the transition between scenes.
- Preview before going live. Switch between the scenes and check the fade, clip start points, and end behavior in your installed OBS setup. Confirm that the timing works for the stream rather than assuming a transition will conceal a clip that ends unexpectedly.
OBS’s Studio Overview Guide identifies Fade as a built-in transition. Adjust its duration in the Scene Transitions dock; the documentation does not prescribe a particular number of milliseconds or seconds for meditation streams.
Use a playlist when you need ordered playback
If you want OBS to play a sequence of files from one source, add a VLC Video source instead of building a separate scene for every clip. VLC must be installed. OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist, unlike the ordinary Media Source, which is intended for an individual media file. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
A playlist handles which item plays next; Fade is a scene-transition setting. The OBS documentation describes these separately and does not establish that playlist-item changes trigger a scene fade or crossfade. If a seamless transition between every item is essential, verify the behavior in your own setup before relying on it.

Choose the transition style that fits
| Approach | What it does | Best suited to | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fade between scenes | Softly changes from one scene to another; duration is adjustable in Scene Transitions. | A simple, calm switch when you operate the scenes. | It is a scene transition, not a documented automatic crossfade between playlist items. |
| VLC Video playlist | Plays a sequence of media files from one source; VLC is required. | Ordered playback managed as a playlist. | Playlist sequencing does not replace configuring scene transitions. |
| Stinger with track matte | Uses an animated visual and a mask to cover or reveal the scene change. | A custom transition with a prepared visual design. | OBS describes black in the matte as outgoing, white as incoming, and gray as blended. OBS recommends combining overlay and matte in one file because separate files are not guaranteed to decode in lock-step. |
A stinger is optional; a basic Fade is enough for a gentle scene change. For track matte details, consult the OBS Transition Guide.
Troubleshoot common transition problems
- The scene changes abruptly: Confirm that Fade, not Cut, is selected in Scene Transitions, and check the fade duration.
- A clip starts at the wrong point after switching scenes: Check Restart playback when source becomes active in that Media Source’s properties.
- The last frame remains visible after a clip ends: Enable Show nothing when playback ends if you want the source to disappear at the end. Plan the next scene change as a separate operation.
- VLC Video is unavailable or the playlist cannot play: Install VLC, which OBS lists as a requirement for the VLC Video source, then check the source’s playlist configuration.
- A stinger’s overlay and matte appear out of sync: Use one combined file for the overlay and matte; OBS does not guarantee separate files will decode in lock-step.
- The playlist advances without a fade: That is not documented as an automatic scene transition. Use scene transitions for scene changes, or verify the playlist behavior in your OBS version before building a workflow around it.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream built from uploaded meditation videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
