Dan + Shay singer Shay Mooney has described his weight loss and sobriety as a personal lifestyle change prompted by exhaustion and feeling unable to play with his children. His reported milestones vary by date: in October 2022 he said he had lost almost 50 pounds in a little over five months; in September 2023 he said he had lost more than 50 pounds and had been sober for about a year.
Why Mooney decided to change
In a September 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Mooney said he felt horrible and was too tired and mentally rundown to play with his children after being on the road—or, as he put it, “really just ever.” He believed unhealthy eating habits and drinking too much contributed to how he felt.
His decision was his own. In a December 2022 Instagram post quoted by Good Morning America, he said, “No one forced me into this. I wanted to change my life for me.”
What he said he changed
His October 2022 account
On October 28, 2022, Good Morning America reported Mooney’s Instagram Story saying he was down “almost 50lbs” after a little over five months. He described eating clean, not drinking alcohol, walking seven miles a day, and doing some weights. He said the lifestyle change made him feel better physically, mentally, and spiritually.

His September 2023 account
In a PEOPLE interview published September 14, 2023, Mooney said he quit sugar and alcohol “cold turkey,” ate whole foods, and fasted. He said these changes began about a year earlier and that he had lost more than 50 pounds. He called it a personal journey and said it was not for everybody.
A separate estimate from 2023
In a 2023 BobbyCast episode, Mooney said his initial plan was to go six months without drinking while fasting, eating whole foods, and cutting sugar. He also recalled later beginning gym training with a trainer and estimated that he had lost about 60 pounds in six months. This is another retrospective estimate, not an independently verified measurement.

How to read the reported weight-loss figures
The figures are Mooney’s own reported milestones in separate accounts, not a single confirmed total. In October 2022 he said “almost 50lbs” after a little over five months; in September 2023 he described losing more than 50 pounds; and in the BobbyCast account he estimated about 60 pounds in six months. The reports do not establish an independently measured weight or his current weight.
