A monitoring delay alone does not show that viewers hear delayed audio. For a single local file, compare OBS Media Source with the playlist source; for an ordered playlist, check VLC Video’s playback and loop settings. There is no single setting proven to fix every OBS playlist delay, and the available reports describe different symptoms on specific systems.
Identify where the delay occurs
Before changing sources or timing settings, write down your operating system, OBS version, source type (Media Source or VLC Video), whether the media is local or network-based, and where you hear the delay. Then compare three signals:
- OBS monitor: Listen to the monitored audio and note whether it is late relative to the video.
- Local recording: Record a short sample in OBS and check whether the saved program output is synchronized.
- YouTube replay: If the concern is the audience experience, inspect the replay after the stream. A monitor-only problem may not be present in the recording or stream.
OBS issue reports illustrate why this distinction matters: one describes delayed VLC output compared with its monitor, while another reports monitor controls lagging even though the stream, mixer levels, and recordings updated immediately. These are individual user reports, not proof of what is happening on your setup.
Choose the OBS source that matches your playback

These are documented controls and defaults, not guaranteed delay fixes. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. If you are diagnosing one supported local file, testing it in Media Source can help determine whether the delay is specific to the playlist source. That comparison does not replace VLC Video if you need its multi-file playlist.

OBS’s official guide says of Loop Playlist: “Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.” The guide lists the default as on. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation for the available source properties.
Work through the fix in order
- Confirm the symptom. Compare the monitor, a short local recording, and the YouTube replay. Keep track of which one is out of sync; do not treat a monitor-only delay as a confirmed stream delay.
- Check source and media. Confirm whether you are using Media Source or VLC Video, and whether the files are local or network streams. For a single supported local file, compare its output in Media Source. For a playlist, verify the item order and playback behavior in VLC Video.
- Verify looping and visibility behavior. In VLC Video, check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist against the intended sequence. Check Visibility Behaviour if the source is hidden or becomes visible as scenes change. For one file in Media Source, inspect Loop.
- Check the VLC installation. If VLC Video is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly, confirm that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Test again with a short recording. Make one change at a time and compare the saved recording before changing additional settings. If only the monitor remains delayed, treat it as a monitoring-path issue rather than assuming viewers receive the same delay.
- Check the connection separately if frames are dropping. OBS says increasing dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator point to a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Investigate the connection and bitrate path in that case; those indicators alone do not establish an audio-sync cause. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
What reported OBS cases can—and cannot—tell you
- A Windows 11 user on OBS 30.1.2 reported VLC Video Source output “delayed by nearly 3 seconds” compared with the same source’s monitor output, and said the same local music file had no delay in standard Media Source. This is one open issue report, not an independently reproduced measurement or evidence of a general VLC delay: OBS issue 10439.
- A macOS 13 user on OBS 29.1.3 reported that local monitor controls lagged after playlist playback, while the stream, mixer levels, and recordings updated immediately. This is one example of monitoring behavior that may differ from audience output: OBS issue 8876.
- An older Windows 10 report for OBS 25.0.8 / 26.0.0-rc1 describes mixed audio/video and monitoring anomalies at VLC playlist transitions. Its age and specific configuration make it historical evidence, not a current general diagnosis: OBS issue 2946.
These reports do not establish how common the problem is, whether it reproduces on current versions, or which setting will fix a different system. The OS, OBS version, source, signal path, media origin, and measured delay all matter.

Does Malayalam cause the audio delay?
The playback and troubleshooting sources address OBS media timing, not Malayalam encoding, typography, transliteration, or YouTube metadata. The language of the speech or on-screen text is not established as a cause of audio delay. Treat language or metadata problems separately unless you can identify a specific failure tied to them.
