You can stream a prerecorded video or a properly connected live input from an Ubuntu 24.04 cloud VM to YouTube by installing FFmpeg, copying the event’s current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and encoding to a profile YouTube accepts. The VM must sustain the chosen encoder workload and upload bitrate; an Indian region name alone does not guarantee that a particular VM type or network capacity is available.
1. Choose and prepare an Indian-region VM
Select an Ubuntu Server 24.04 image in a region where your chosen VM product and machine type are actually available. AWS lists Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2), with Hyderabad marked as opt-in in its region list. Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) on its Cloud Workstations locations page, but that is not a guarantee of Compute Engine machine availability. Check the provider’s service-specific availability before provisioning: AWS Regions and Google Cloud Workstations locations.
Enable SSH access and configure the provider’s firewall or security rules for administration. Before choosing a machine size, account for the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, FFmpeg preset, concurrent work, storage, and sustained outbound throughput. No single instance size or provider is established as best for every stream.
2. Install and verify FFmpeg
Use Ubuntu’s package manager, then inspect the installed binary and available encoders. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API setup guide includes the apt installation example; the package version and build options can vary by image and repository state.

Confirm the encoders you intend to use are present—for example, libx264 for CPU-based H.264 encoding. Installation guidance: Google Cloud: Before you begin.
3. Create or select a YouTube Live event and get its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to broadcast.
- Copy that event’s current server URL and stream key. Use the endpoint exactly as shown; if YouTube offers an RTMPS endpoint, select it.
- Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in an article, public repository, screenshot, shell history, or unredacted support log. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and YouTube Help: encoder setup.

A protocol mismatch can look like a connection that reaches a server and then stalls or times out. Check that the endpoint and client agree on RTMPS rather than attempting cleartext RTMP; see Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
4. Match encoding settings to the event
Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and verify the event’s received preview and stream-health messages during rehearsal. Current H.264 recommended video bitrates include:

These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not universal bitrates for every codec or source. YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance also permits H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with a recommended bitrate of 128 kbps. Its recommended advanced SDR settings include progressive scan and Rec. 709 color. Consult the current table before setting other profiles: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Set the video bitrate below the VM’s stable available upload capacity, with margin for variation; a best-case speed-test peak is not a safe sustained target.
- For a two-second GOP, calculate the keyframe interval in frames from the output frame rate. For example, at 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds.
- Keep output resolution, frame rate, pixel format, and color settings appropriate to both the source and event. Downscale only if the source, encoder load, or network capacity calls for it.
5. Stream a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
For a file, -re reads at approximately real-time speed and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The following is an illustrative starting pattern, not a tested command. It targets H.264 at 30 fps with a 4 Mbps video bitrate and a two-second GOP; adjust the bitrate and frame settings to match your event and source.

The example’s settings are not suitable for every resolution or frame rate: change -g to keep the keyframe interval at two seconds for the selected frame rate, and select the video bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for the actual profile. The command also assumes the input file has audio; if it does not, remove or revise the audio options. FFmpeg’s RTMPS command pattern is also illustrated in AWS’s FFmpeg streaming setup guide, but that guide’s destination credentials are for AWS IVS, not YouTube.
For a camera or other live input
The file command does not connect to a camera or capture device. Substitute an FFmpeg input appropriate to the device and operating environment, and confirm that the VM can access it. A headless cloud VM does not automatically see a camera or capture hardware attached to your local computer. Choose the input separately, then retain the same output-profile checks and YouTube destination handling.

6. Rehearse, monitor, and keep the stream running
Before the intended broadcast, run a test with representative motion and audio. In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate, shows a preview, and reports healthy ingestion. Check sound, orientation, aspect ratio, FFmpeg output, CPU and memory use, and network throughput. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
For longer operation, decide how FFmpeg should be supervised, restarted after failure, and logged. Those are deployment choices, not a guarantee that a stream will never disconnect. Protect the stream key if configuring a service manager, and test the recovery behavior before relying on it.
Common problems and checks
- Connection stalls or times out: verify the event’s current server URL and whether it expects RTMPS; ensure the client is not using cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: compare the selected bitrate with stable outbound capacity, then check network use and whether encoding is overloading the VM. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if necessary.
- FFmpeg cannot find an encoder: inspect
ffmpeg -encodersand use an encoder available in the installed build, or install a build that supports the intended codec. - The event receives the wrong profile: inspect the command’s output settings and confirm the preview and stream-health panel show the expected resolution and frame rate.
- No sound or incorrect audio: confirm the input contains an audio stream and that the selected audio options match it; check the YouTube preview during rehearsal.
- The stream stops when a file ends: for a looping prerecorded stream, confirm
-stream_loop -1is present and the input is readable for the process’s full runtime. - The key may have been exposed: rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the protected configuration used by FFmpeg.
7. Estimate VM cost and choose an alternative only if it fits
Compare Indian VM options using actual instance availability, sustained CPU performance for the chosen software-encoding preset, stable outbound throughput and egress billing, storage for any file kept on the VM, and region latency or administration needs. The cited region lists do not establish current VM prices, capacity, bandwidth guarantees, or a best provider. Test the selected machine with the real source and settings rather than sizing from region alone.
