The hard parts are securing broadcast rights and keeping the stream monitored: a home setup can fail, and YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, so plan sessions and restarts rather than promising an uninterrupted broadcast.
How do I start a 24/7 YouTube live stream?
Start by enabling live streaming, clearing every recording and visual for the intended use, then sending the program through an encoder to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A computer running encoder software or a standalone hardware encoder can do this. For a genuinely continuous channel, also plan how a person will monitor the equipment and handle session transitions, network failures, and copyright alerts.
Check channel eligibility first
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The minimum age for a live streamer is 16, and first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable the feature well before the planned launch and check the account for restrictions. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Decide what the audience will see
A radio-style live stream still needs video. Pair your music with a channel visual, such as cover art or a gently animated scene. That is an editorial choice, not a YouTube requirement; ensure you have permission to use the image, animation, fonts, and any other included material in a live broadcast and any resulting archive.

Can I stream music on YouTube live?
Only if you have the rights needed for the live broadcast and its intended territories, as well as for any archived version. YouTube’s live terms place responsibility for those rights on the content provider, including music licensing rights. Do not assume that owning a recording, subscribing to a consumer music service, or finding a track on a platform grants permission to rebroadcast it.
Clear the whole playlist before launch
- Confirm that your license covers live transmission, the territories where viewers may watch, and any recording or archive YouTube creates.
- Check that the license covers each composition and recording in the playlist, along with any artwork or other visual material.
- Keep written licenses and correspondence accessible to the person monitoring the channel.
- For third-party licensed music, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that even licensed music may be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects copyrighted material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop; if the material continues, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a live stream. Review YouTube’s live-stream terms and copyright guidance.
Creator Music is not a live-music workaround
YouTube’s Creator Music revenue-sharing usage requirements exclude live streams. A track’s availability through Creator Music does not by itself solve the licensing question for a 24/7 live broadcast. Check the Creator Music usage requirements and obtain rights that expressly cover your planned use.

What equipment do I need to live stream from home?
At minimum, you need a verified YouTube channel, an audio program and video feed, an encoder, and a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity. A suitable computer running encoder software or a standalone hardware encoder can send the feed. You may already own what is needed; no specific encoder model is established as best for this use case.
Choose an encoder you can operate and recover
Compare a software encoder on a home computer with a standalone hardware encoder based on equipment you already own, configuration effort, monitoring needs, power consumption, and how you will recover after a power, operating-system, or network interruption. Neither choice removes the need for a backup and restart plan.
A stable connection and sufficient upload bandwidth matter more than download speed. YouTube recommends a reliable connection and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you operate a primary and backup encoder at the same time, account for both feeds. Other household members’ uploads can also reduce available capacity. Ethernet is an optional way to connect a computer to the router; YouTube recommends reliability and bandwidth, not a particular connection type. See YouTube’s network advice.

Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open Go Live in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s YouTube or RTMP destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not share it publicly.
- Configure the audio and video feed. Choose the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then add the cleared bossa nova program and visual.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming feed and inspect the preview, stream health, audio, and visual before starting the live broadcast.
- Start the stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm the audience-facing stream is live, then continue monitoring the encoder and Live Control Room.
Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the current Studio workflow and stream controls.
Choose stable video and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommendation is a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.
| Output example | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | Consider this lower-bitrate option if your upload connection cannot reliably sustain a higher rate. |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | Allow at least 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including audio. |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality on a particular home network. Test with the intended audio and visual, measure upload speed, and lower the resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the feed. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for settings beyond these examples.

Plan sessions, monitoring, and restarts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not plan on a single encoder session running indefinitely: decide how you will end and restart sessions before relying on an all-day schedule, and test the handoff so viewers know what to expect. Confirm current YouTube limits and controls when planning the operation; the documented archive behavior is not a promise that a session can run forever.
Assign someone to watch the encoder, connection, audio levels, and Live Control Room status. Test the session transition in advance, schedule and promote the stream, and keep a practical recovery plan for power loss, computer restarts, and internet interruptions. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a specific 24/7 automation product or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the stream selected in Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The preview is unstable or drops: Check upload speed rather than download speed, reduce bitrate or resolution, account for other household upload use, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Audio or video is missing or incorrect: Inspect the encoder’s selected input and output, then test with representative program audio and the intended visual before going live.
- YouTube shows a copyright warning or replaces the stream: Check Studio for restrictions or strikes, stop any flagged material, and confirm with the rights holder that your channel is allowlisted if the music is licensed. Do not restart with the same un-cleared content.
- A long-running session reaches a transition point: Follow the planned end-and-restart procedure rather than relying on a single session to run indefinitely; verify current YouTube session behavior before setting an operating promise.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube-only radio stream built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving a home encoder running: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud runs the loop, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This does not remove your responsibility to clear music and visuals for live use or monitor the channel.

Costs and monetization
A home setup may require no new encoder or computer if you already have suitable equipment. Account for power, network reliability, and backup plans when comparing a computer-based setup with a standalone encoder. An Ethernet cable may help connect a computer to the router, but it is optional rather than a YouTube requirement.
YouTube says streams can be monetized for channels in the YouTube Partner Program. Eligibility and available features depend on channel status and YouTube’s rules; a live radio channel is not a guarantee of revenue. Check current program requirements in YouTube Studio before building a budget around monetization.
