OBS WebSocket Settings for Remotely Controlling a YouTube Loop Stream

OBS WebSocket controls OBS scenes and sources, while YouTube stream URL and key handle delivery. Set it up securely and test the full workflow.

OBS WebSocket lets a compatible client remotely control OBS scenes and sources; it does not send your stream to YouTube or replace your YouTube stream URL and key. In OBS Studio 28 and newer, open Tools → obs-websocket Settings, keep authentication enabled, set a strong password, and give your client the configured host and port. OBS WebSocket 5.x uses port 4455 by default. Configure YouTube ingest separately, then test the full workflow before relying on it unattended.

What OBS WebSocket controls—and what it does not

OBS describes WebSocket as a way to automate or control OBS scenes and sources with external tools. A compatible client can send commands to OBS; the connection is a remote-control layer, not a streaming destination. See the OBS Remote Control Guide.

YouTube ingest is separate. OBS sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured for the broadcast. YouTube Live Control Room manages the broadcast and its key. Connecting a WebSocket client does not configure those ingest details or itself start a YouTube broadcast.

Where to find OBS WebSocket settings

  1. Use OBS Studio 28 or newer where possible. OBS WebSocket is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and newer. Older OBS versions may require the plugin; consult the obs-websocket project documentation for version details.
  2. Open Tools → obs-websocket Settings. Confirm the WebSocket server is enabled.
  3. Set authentication. Enable authentication and choose a strong password. OBS recommends password protection to help prevent unauthorized control.
  4. Record the configured port. Version 5.x uses port 4455 by default, but you can change it in the settings. Your client must use the port actually configured in OBS.

Connect a remote-control client safely

Configure your chosen compatible client with the OBS host, configured WebSocket port, and password. OBS lists clients including Streamer.bot, Macro Deck, Touch Portal, and OBS Blade; listing them does not establish or endorse their commercial terms.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Treat the WebSocket password as an administrative credential: a connected client can control OBS.
  • Keep authentication enabled and limit access to trusted clients and networks.
  • Do not expose the OBS WebSocket port publicly or share its password with untrusted services. The OBS documentation does not prescribe one universal remote-access network design.

Prepare the loop stream and configure YouTube separately

Set up the content in OBS

Build the scene and sources you want the client to control. A looped video is an OBS media/source configuration, but the OBS remote-control documentation does not establish a definitive loop toggle or playlist workflow. Verify the behavior of your selected source and client in your own OBS setup rather than assuming WebSocket automatically creates a continuous playlist.

Set up YouTube ingest

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and follow the applicable workflow for an instant or scheduled stream. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, or select YouTube if it is offered in the account connection workflow.
  3. Start sending the encoder feed from OBS. If the stream workflow requires it, use YouTube Live Control Room to take the broadcast live.
  4. Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password for sending a feed to the stream; if compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. See Manage live stream settings.

Test the full remote workflow before leaving it unattended

Test both control and delivery: verify that the client can perform the intended OBS scene/source actions, that OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream, and that the broadcast is live when required. WebSocket settings do not keep an unstable ingest connection alive. OBS says dropped frames and disconnections can result from an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends investigating network, server, and bitrate issues separately.

Troubleshooting

Symptom What to check Next step
The client cannot connect to OBS. Confirm the WebSocket server is enabled and the client has the correct OBS host and configured port. For WebSocket 5.x, 4455 is the default, not a guarantee that the port remains unchanged. Correct the endpoint and retry; confirm the client is permitted to reach OBS on the trusted network.
The connection is rejected or control fails. Check that authentication is enabled and the client password matches the current OBS password. Update the client credentials. Do not disable authentication as a shortcut.
The WebSocket client works, but YouTube is not receiving the stream. WebSocket controls OBS; it does not supply YouTube ingest credentials. Check the stream URL, key, selected broadcast, and whether YouTube requires a manual Go live action. Correct the OBS streaming configuration and use Live Control Room as required by the instant or scheduled workflow.
YouTube shows dropped frames or OBS disconnects. This is an ingest or network problem, not a WebSocket setting. OBS identifies unstable connectivity or an unsustainable bitrate as possible causes. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps and assess the network, server, and bitrate.
The loop does not behave as expected. WebSocket provides remote scene/source control; it does not define a universal looping or playlist recipe. Check the media source’s configuration and test its loop behavior in OBS before leaving the stream unattended.
