An audio cutoff after a few hours does not by itself mean YouTube has imposed a time limit or that one particular encoder bug is responsible. The quickest way to narrow it down is to compare the music source, the encoder’s audio meter, a local recording, YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages, and what viewers on different networks hear.
Find where the audio disappears
At or shortly after the next cutoff, check the same moment in each part of the chain. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and reviewing a local archive for audio or video problems. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also recommends reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, then checking the outbound connection if the encoder output looks healthy.
- Check the music source. Is the player or application still playing? Does the encoder’s meter for that specific source move?
- Check the encoder output. Look at the outgoing mix and the encoder’s connection or dropped-frame indicators. A moving source meter does not necessarily mean the selected broadcast mix contains that source.
- Check a local archive. Listen across the time viewers reported silence. Note whether the recording is also silent or whether it contains the audio.
- Check YouTube playback and reports. Find out whether the problem affects one viewer, viewers sharing a network, or viewers on separate networks.
| What you find | Most useful next checks |
|---|---|
| The source stops, or its encoder meter goes flat | Check the source application, audio capture or routing, playback device, and power or sleep behavior. These are diagnostic possibilities, not established causes for this particular stream. |
| The source meter moves, but the local archive and broadcast are silent | Inspect the selected output mix, encoder logs, and YouTube health messages. Check that the ingest stream has one supported audio stream and no more than two audio channels. |
| The encoder and archive contain audio, but viewers report silence | Review YouTube’s health messages and the outbound connection. Compare reports from viewers on different networks to separate a viewer or shared-network issue from a broader stream problem. |
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes problems reported by one viewer, viewers sharing a network, and viewers on different networks. Those reports help locate the fault; they do not establish the cause on their own.
Read YouTube’s health messages at the cutoff time
In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the stream-health indicator and its timestamped errors around the moment the audio stopped. YouTube says health issues are marked by severity and remain visible while unresolved. The messages can identify ingest or configuration problems such as no audio stream, multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, or too many audio channels.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s audio and video error guidance identifies H.264 video with AAC audio as the target combination for the described configuration. Its detailed audio messages also list AAC or MP3 as supported codecs. The same Help page recommends 128 Kbps audio bitrate and a 44.1 kHz sample rate in the relevant error context. Check the exact message and your current encoder settings rather than changing these values without a matching warning.
The YouTube Live Streaming API health reference uses diagnostic labels including noAudioStream, multipleAudioStreams, and audioCodec, along with audio bitrate, sample-rate, channel, and primary/backup mismatch categories. Treat a label as a clue about the reported stream condition, not a reason to alter unrelated settings.

If the encoder and archive have sound, check the connection
If the encoder output and local recording remain audible while playback is disrupted for viewers, examine the connection to YouTube and the viewers’ reports. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, choosing stream quality appropriate to the connection, running a representative test, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its live encoder settings guidance says a test should include audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable remote connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; enough dropped frames may disconnect a stream. Check the encoder’s connection indicators and stable upload capacity, not just the best result from a speed test. Correlate warnings with the reported cutoff time.

- If the current video bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain consistently, try a lower bitrate appropriate to the streaming service and stable upload capacity.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. An ethernet cable for the streaming computer is only useful for testing or repairing the network path; it cannot fix a stopped source, incorrect audio mix, or unsupported audio configuration.
- If the issue persists, check VPN or security software, network drivers, router or modem connectivity, and network cables or other equipment. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- If local checks do not resolve recurring connection problems, contact your ISP; congestion or routing changes may be outside your control.
OBS’s guide discusses dropped frames specifically; that evidence should not be treated as proof that OBS causes every kind of audio failure.
Test the whole setup before the next long broadcast
Run a private or otherwise suitable test using the same source, audio routing, encoder settings, and network you plan to use. Include representative audio and video movement, then monitor both YouTube’s stream-health indicator and the encoder throughout the test. If a failure returns, record its time and preserve the local archive and encoder log so they can be compared with YouTube’s health messages.

If the setup still shows no clear problem, YouTube advises trying a different encoder as a controlled test. Change only the encoder while keeping the source, settings, and network as consistent as practical; otherwise, the test cannot clearly show whether the encoder was involved.
