You can use a JSON schedule to tell your own program which YouTube live event to manage next, but YouTube does not provide a built-in JSON playlist-rotation feature. The YouTube Live Streaming API manages broadcasts (the events viewers see) and streams (the video inputs); your scheduler must define the rotation, interpret the schedule, and safely call the API.
What “rotate” means in the YouTube Live Streaming API
A liveBroadcast represents a live event on YouTube. It corresponds to a YouTube video and includes metadata such as scheduled start and end times and lifecycle status. A liveStream represents the video input sent to YouTube. Your application can bind a stream to a broadcast.
These are separate resources, not playlist items that YouTube automatically cycles. The API documents methods to create, bind, list, update, and transition broadcasts, and to create, list, and update streams. It does not prescribe a JSON schedule format or decide what “next” means; your code supplies that policy. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts · YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams.
Choose the intended behavior before writing the schedule. You may be rotating among separate scheduled events, reusing stream inputs across events, or switching sources within a single continuous production. Those are different workflows. A schedule that selects the next broadcast does not, by itself, switch the video being sent to an already-running stream.

Choose a scheduling approach
| Approach | Setup and repeatability | Control and operational work |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio scheduling | Uses Studio’s event setup rather than a custom JSON parser; suitable when an operator can schedule events directly. | Selection and ordering are managed by the operator. It avoids building an API scheduler, but does not implement an application-defined rotation policy. |
| Custom API scheduler with pre-created broadcasts | Requires API authentication and code to read and validate the schedule. Events are created ahead of time. | Can select among known broadcasts in a repeatable way. The scheduler still needs state checks, monitoring, and recovery handling. |
| Custom API scheduler that creates or binds resources as needed | Requires the same schedule and authentication work, plus code to create or bind resources as events arrive. | Offers more control over resource creation timing, with more mutating operations to make safe and idempotent. |
There is no universally best option: event frequency, whether continuity matters, and the time available to operate and monitor automation should determine the choice.
Design a JSON schedule your code can validate
YouTube does not prescribe a JSON schema for playlist rotation. Define one for your application and use stable resource identifiers and explicit UTC timestamps. Broadcast resources expose scheduledStartTime and scheduledEndTime; if no scheduled end time is supplied, YouTube treats the broadcast as continuing indefinitely. See the broadcast resource reference.

For a finite schedule of separate events, a simple application-owned shape could look like this:
{
"timezone": "UTC",
"events": [
{
"order": 1,
"broadcastId": "YOUR_BROADCAST_ID",
"streamId": "YOUR_STREAM_ID",
"start": "2026-10-10T18:00:00Z",
"end": "2026-10-10T19:00:00Z"
},
{
"order": 2,
"broadcastId": "YOUR_NEXT_BROADCAST_ID",
"streamId": "YOUR_NEXT_STREAM_ID",
"start": "2026-10-10T19:00:00Z"
}
]
}
This is an example design, not a YouTube format. The identifiers must be real resources accessible to the authorized channel; the times are illustrative. Decide whether an omitted end time is intentional, and make recurrence explicit if your application supports it rather than inferring a repeat rule.

- Use ISO 8601 UTC timestamps (the trailing
Z) or define and consistently enforce another timezone policy. UTC avoids ambiguous local times during daylight-saving changes. - Reject malformed dates, missing identifiers, duplicate entries, conflicting overlaps, and past events if your workflow cannot handle them.
- Define a deterministic tie-break rule if entries can share a start time. An explicit order field helps make selection reproducible.
- Keep schedule data separate from credentials. Do not put OAuth tokens or other secrets in a file that may be shared or committed to source control.
Implement the scheduler in safe stages
- Authenticate for the intended channel and confirm eligibility. Use authorization with the scopes required by the API methods you plan to call. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the authorized user; API requests can fail when the user lacks live permissions or live streaming is not enabled.
- Load and validate the schedule before making changes. Parse the JSON, validate timestamps and identifiers, apply your timezone and ordering rules, and stop on conflicts rather than guessing which event should win.
- Resolve the relevant YouTube resources. List broadcasts or request known IDs, then retrieve the resource parts your workflow needs. The broadcast list method requires authorization, a
partparameter, and exactly one ofbroadcastStatus,id, ormine. Its documented status filter acceptsactive,all,completed, andupcoming. Consult liveBroadcasts.list for parameters, authorization details, and errors. - Check current state before acting. Confirm that a broadcast is in a state suitable for the requested operation. The official API guidance says to verify that the stream bound to a broadcast is active before transitioning the broadcast to
testing. Do not assume an API transition can safely be repeated just because a scheduler restarted. - Create or bind only when needed. Bind the intended stream to the broadcast when your workflow requires it, then confirm stream readiness and use supported lifecycle transitions deliberately. Creating a broadcast, binding a stream, and transitioning a broadcast are distinct operations; changing your JSON schedule does not automatically change YouTube’s live input.
- Persist results and make retries idempotent. Record the schedule entry, the resulting YouTube resource IDs, and operation outcomes. On retry, check whether the intended broadcast already exists or is already bound before creating another one. This is application design guidance for handling mutating requests, not a YouTube guarantee.
- Log failures and define recovery behavior. Record which event was selected, the resource state observed, the API operation attempted, and the response or error. Decide whether a failure should pause the rotation for operator review or retry under a bounded policy.
- Test a controlled event before unattended use. Check the visible broadcast, stream binding, start and end handling, and what happens when credentials, connectivity, or an API call fails. A successful API response alone does not establish that your whole channel workflow behaves as intended.
Understand the API boundary and common failure modes
- The schedule parses, but nothing rotates: JSON is only input to your application. Implement and verify the selection rule that chooses the next eligible entry.
- A broadcast exists, but the expected video is not sent: A broadcast is the event; a stream is the input. Check the binding and stream readiness instead of treating the broadcast list as a video playlist.
- A transition fails: Inspect the current broadcast and bound-stream state first. In particular, the API guidance requires an active bound stream before moving a broadcast to
testing. - The list request is rejected: Check authorization, the required
partparameter, and that exactly one ofbroadcastStatus,id, ormineis supplied. Also verify that the authorized account has live-streaming permission enabled. - A retry creates duplicates or conflicts: Persist resource IDs and operation outcomes, then reconcile existing resources before retrying a create or bind operation.
- An event appears to have no end: Confirm that the schedule and broadcast resource include the intended end time. YouTube treats a broadcast with no scheduled end time as continuing indefinitely.
Keep YouTube’s live and content rules in the workflow
API automation does not replace channel eligibility or content rights. The account used for API calls must be permitted to live stream, and the video you transmit must be content you are entitled to use under YouTube’s rules. A scheduler can select and manage events; it cannot make copyrighted or otherwise disallowed material permissible. Review current requirements in YouTube Help: live streaming and YouTube’s Community Guidelines before automating a channel’s programming.
