A bitrate change and a stream disconnect happening close together do not prove that the new bitrate caused the outage. Check the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room and OBS’s output or encoder status first. Then compare bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bandwidth as a set; the right bitrate depends on all of them.
Start with the error, not another bitrate change
Before changing more settings, note the current OBS bitrate, video codec, resolution, and frame rate. In YouTube Live Control Room, read the stream-health warning or error and note when it appears. In OBS, check the stream’s output or encoder status and, if necessary, review the OBS log for errors around the time the stream stopped.
These clues help separate a settings mismatch from an encoder problem, a connection interruption, or a stream-key setup issue. Without the exact YouTube message, OBS log, active settings, and connection conditions, there is no basis for naming one cause.
Check that the settings work together
YouTube’s encoder guidance gives recommended bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. A bitrate number considered on its own cannot establish whether the configuration is appropriate. For example, YouTube’s current H.264 table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are platform recommendations for those specific combinations, not universal targets or proof that a bitrate change caused a disconnect.

Use the encoder settings YouTube recommends
- Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate), which YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: Set two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video format: YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrate depends on which codec you select.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers. Consider this if the observed error points to connection or protocol setup; it does not, by itself, explain a disconnect after a bitrate change.
After changing resolution, frame rate, or codec, check the corresponding bitrate recommendation again rather than carrying over a number chosen for different settings.
Follow the symptom to the next check
If the stream looks or sounds poor in OBS
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points to encoder errors and CPU load when output quality is poor. Check OBS’s encoder status and error information, and inspect a local recording if you have one: it can help show whether the picture or audio problem is present before the signal reaches YouTube. Use a current version of the encoder software.

If OBS looks healthy but YouTube or viewers report trouble
Test the strength of the outbound internet connection. If the test identifies a connection problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider. A bitrate that the available upload connection cannot sustain may contribute to delivery problems, but the actual stream-health message and connection test are needed to assess that possibility.
If YouTube reports an encoder start error
Check whether the stream key is the issue only when the error points that way. YouTube’s guidance for an encoder start error is to obtain a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. A key is a separate setup issue; the timing of a bitrate change alone does not show that the key is wrong.

If the selected resolution exceeds the connection’s capacity
YouTube’s error guidance says to consider lowering the resolution when the available bandwidth cannot support the selected one. Once you lower it, reassess the bitrate recommendation for the new resolution, codec, and frame rate.
Test the complete setup before the next broadcast
- Set the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and two-second keyframe interval in OBS.
- Start a test stream with representative audio and motion rather than judging the setup from a static scene alone.
- Monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and watch OBS’s output or encoder status while the test runs.
- If a warning or disconnect occurs, record its exact wording and time before changing settings. Use that evidence to decide whether to investigate the encoder, stream key, or outbound connection.
YouTube Help’s encoder-settings guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
