How to Add Background Music to a Continuous Prerecorded YouTube Stream

Add a separate looping music file to prerecorded video in OBS, balance and test the mix, then connect the scene to YouTube Live. Understand Content ID allowlisting and archive claims before choosing music.

In OBS Studio, add your prerecorded video and a separate music file as media sources in the same scene, set either source to loop if needed, then balance and test the mix before sending it to YouTube Live. Use music licensed for both the live broadcast and its archived copy: YouTube can interrupt a live stream for a third-party match even when you have permission, unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID.

Choose music cleared for the live stream and its archive

Before adding a track, check that its license covers your intended YouTube live use, any archived copy, monetization, and the territories where viewers may watch. Keep the license documentation. If the music is copyright-protected, YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with the label or distributor: Going live for music channels.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says that if the channel has not been added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist, the live stream can still be interrupted. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the event. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams, and arrange allowlisting with the rights holder before broadcasting licensed third-party material.

Add the video and music in OBS

  1. Add the prerecorded video: In your OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the video file. In its source properties, enable Loop if it should restart when playback ends. OBS documents these file-source controls in its Media Sources guide.
  2. Add the music: Add another Media Source in the same scene and select the music file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats. Enable Loop if the track should repeat independently of the video.
  3. Balance the sound: Use the music source’s fader in the Audio Mixer to set its level. Watch its meter while playback is active; OBS advises keeping background music and alert effects in the green zone. Use audio monitoring to listen to the source, then make a test recording and play it back to check the mix. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

Video and audio sources can have different durations. Check what happens when each file reaches its end: loop the source that must continue, and make sure the scene does not unexpectedly go silent or stop showing motion during a restart.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the complete scene

  1. Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the stream key as private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. Configure the encoder: Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; its supported audio formats include AAC and MP3. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the video configuration that fits your stream.
  3. Send a test feed: Start the OBS feed and, for the scheduled-stream workflow, confirm the preview in YouTube Studio before going live. Test with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing the actual audio and motion you intend to stream.
  4. Monitor the broadcast: Watch YouTube’s stream health and copyright notices while live. After the stream, check the archived video for claims. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose an operating setup for a continuous stream

OBS is the direct file-source-and-mixer workflow when you can keep the computer and streaming software running and monitor them. YouTube’s verified encoder list also describes cloud-based prerecorded 24/7 streaming options, including Gyre, and lists the AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder with PlayToStream functionality for scheduled prerecorded media. Features, formats, reliability, and current prices vary; verify them with the provider before choosing. No hardware encoder or physical audio mixer is required for the OBS method above.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded prerecorded video or playlist live continuously. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not broadcast from a camera.
