Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 still had no release beyond festival screenings as of a July 2026 report. Its planned August 2024 theatrical date was delayed after the first film’s underwhelming box-office performance. That is a serious setback, but the available reporting does not establish that the chapter—or the saga—has been formally cancelled.
Why Chapter 2 did not arrive in theaters in August 2024
Warner Bros. and New Line delayed the planned August 16, 2024 theatrical release of Chapter 2 after Chapter 1 performed below expectations at the box office, Screen Daily reported on July 11, 2024. The announcement was a delay, not confirmation that the film had been cancelled. Screen Daily’s report on the delayed release covered the immediate change to the schedule.
Where the saga stood in July 2026
A July 16, 2026 Daily Herald / Tribune News Service Q&A said Chapter 2 had screened at festivals but had not received a wider release. The same account described Chapter 3 as partly completed and Chapter 4 as not made. These are statuses reported by that outlet; the available reporting does not establish a formal cancellation or provide an official current release announcement.
The distinction matters: a festival screening is not the same as a public theatrical or streaming release, and an unfinished installment is not necessarily abandoned. The July 2026 account offers the latest status in the reporting cited here, rather than a confirmed release plan from the filmmakers or distributor. Read the Daily Herald / Tribune News Service Q&A.

Chapter 3 was already a financing challenge in 2024
The saga’s production ambitions were substantial. In an Associated Press interview published May 19, 2024, Costner said he had scripts for the third and fourth parts and had filmed three days of Chapter 3 while continuing to seek the money needed to complete it. He put it plainly: “I’ve shot three days and I continue to have to press for money to finish this.” That is a dated account of the project in May 2024, not an update on its current production status. The Associated Press interview provides that earlier context.
A separate setback: the 2025 lawsuit
There is also a legal dispute, separate from the release delay. In May 2025, stunt performer Devyn LaBella sued Costner and production entities over an alleged unscripted rape scene filmed for Chapter 2. Costner’s attorney disputed the allegations and said the lawsuit had no merit, according to the Associated Press. The lawsuit reports allegations and a response; it is not, by itself, a court finding. The cited report does not establish that the litigation caused the film’s distribution delay. What “another devastating blow” means for viewers
For audiences waiting to continue the story, the clearest issue is distribution: as of the July 2026 account, Chapter 2 had not moved beyond festival screenings. The broader project also faced production and financing uncertainty, while the lawsuit represented an independent legal controversy. The evidence supports describing a stalled public release and an uncertain future—not declaring the saga dead or treating the allegations as proven.
