For a large transfer, use a restartable SSH-based tool such as rclone’s SFTP backend, plan around your measured upload speed, and leave enough time to check the media and stream before going live.
Keep the two network legs separate
There are two distinct connections in this workflow. First, your source machine or cloud storage sends the archive to the VPS. Later, the VPS sends the live feed to YouTube. The first leg is limited by the source’s effective upload rate and the route to the VPS; the second depends on the VPS’s outbound bandwidth and the encoder’s chosen bitrate.
Copy and verify the media before starting the broadcast. A completed transfer does not by itself prove that the files are readable, compatible with your playback method, or organized into the intended playlist.
Choose a transfer route
From a local computer: use SFTP through rclone
For a VPS you can reach over SSH, rclone’s SFTP backend is a practical option. SFTP runs over SSH v2, and rclone documents restartable transfer operations, integrity checks, and timestamp preservation. Configure the VPS as an SFTP remote named vps, then copy the archive to a directory the eventual encoder account can read:

This is a command pattern, not a ready-to-run server configuration: vps: must be a remote you have configured, and the destination path depends on the VPS account’s SFTP home-directory rules. Use a trusted host key and SSH key authentication. Do not disable host-key checking; keep private keys and other credentials accessible only to the accounts that need them.
For a one-time upload, copy avoids the mirror behavior of sync. Rclone describes copy as transferring new or changed files, while one-way sync makes the destination directory identical to the source. If you use sync for recurring updates, preview the planned changes first and pay particular attention to deletions: destination-only files can be removed when making the destination match the source. From cloud storage: transfer directly when supported
If the archive already lives in a cloud service, rclone may be able to transfer between that service and the VPS without downloading the archive to your computer and uploading it again. Rclone says it supports more than 70 cloud-storage products and can transfer between providers; that does not guarantee that a particular account, provider, or destination permits every operation. Check the relevant service’s support and account limits first. Consider egress charges, quotas, API throttling, network policies, and the VPS’s free disk space.

Using scp or another SFTP client
A familiar scp or SFTP client may be simpler for a one-off transfer, but restart behavior depends on the client and how you invoke it. Check whether it can resume a partial transfer before relying on it for a long copy. Do not assume every interrupted SCP or SFTP session automatically continues where it stopped.
Estimate the transfer and make room
Estimate from your measured rate
There is no reliable universal duration for a large archive without its size and effective source upload rate. As a lower-bound estimate, divide the bytes to be transferred by the measured bytes per second. Measure sustained throughput from the source location to the VPS, or to a representative endpoint; the advertised speed of a connection is not necessarily the rate this route will sustain.

Reserve extra time for protocol overhead, small-file metadata, throttling, retries, and verification. Start early enough to recover from an interrupted transfer and inspect the files before the scheduled stream. If you set rclone’s bandwidth limiter, note that its documented units are bytes per second, whereas network rates are commonly expressed in bits per second. See rclone’s bandwidth documentation.
Check capacity and access before copying
- Confirm the VPS has enough free disk space for the archive and any additional working files your playback or encoding setup needs.
- Choose a destination directory the encoder account can read. Check permissions after copying rather than discovering an access problem when the stream starts.
- For a large directory of many small files, account for file-count and metadata overhead as well as total bytes.
- Keep the transfer log somewhere persistent and private; avoid exposing credentials or a YouTube stream key in logs.
Copy, verify, and check playback
- Configure access. Set up the SFTP remote with the correct host, account, authentication, and trusted host key. Check that the destination path resolves as expected for that account.
- Run the copy. Use a copy-style operation for the initial upload, with progress and a persistent log. If the transfer is interrupted, use the documented restartable workflow rather than assuming a different client will resume automatically.
- Compare the result. Compare source and destination file counts and sizes. Use checksums where the source and destination backends support them; exact checksum availability depends on backend support. Rclone documents checksum verification and restartable transfer behavior at rclone.org.
- Test representative media on the VPS. Open or probe sample files, including files from different parts of the archive, and check that the encoder account can read them. Confirm the playlist or playback process advances as intended; a successful file copy is not a playlist test.
Configure the YouTube stream from the VPS
Get the ingest details and protect the key
In YouTube Studio, create or open the stream in the Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder running on the VPS. YouTube describes the key as the address/password for the encoder feed. Treat it as a password: do not publish it in examples, leave it in shell history others can read, include it in a source repository, or expose it in logs. YouTube documents how to reset a compromised key in Manage live stream settings; its encoder setup guide covers creating a live stream.

Match encoder settings to the media and current guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant-bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the current table rather than relying on a single bitrate for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” — YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed 2026-10-03).

Whether files can be relayed without transcoding depends on their codecs, container, and your encoder/playback path. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the media; transcoding decodes and re-encodes it, adding compute demand and potentially changing quality. Do not assume one FFmpeg command will suit an archive whose formats and VPS resources are unknown.
Check outbound capacity and server load
Once the files are on the VPS, the archive-upload connection is no longer carrying the live feed. The stream uses the VPS’s outbound connection. Measure or otherwise validate the server’s available outbound throughput for the intended stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and says to account for primary and backup streams if you use both. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS will sustain a stream. Also consider whether the VPS has enough CPU or GPU capacity for the chosen decode, encode, or remux path; load varies with codecs, filters, resolution, and software.

- Start the VPS encoder early enough for its feed to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for representative picture and audio, including motion and any transitions or playlist changes.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and confirm the playlist advances as intended.
- Resolve errors or unstable health before starting the actual broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring before and during a stream.
Troubleshooting the transfer and stream
The transfer is much slower than expected
Check the measured source upload rate, the route to the VPS, small-file overhead, provider throttling, and any cloud API limits. Confirm that no bandwidth limiter is set lower than intended and that its value is in bytes per second if using rclone’s limiter. Recalculate using the effective rate, then allow extra time for retries and verification.

The transfer stops or the connection drops
Check the persistent log to identify the last completed work and use the transfer tool’s restartable operation. Rclone documents restartable transfers; behavior differs across other clients, so consult the documentation for the specific client and invocation rather than restarting blindly or assuming partial files are complete.
Files are missing, unreadable, or the playlist does not advance
Compare file counts and sizes, use checksums where supported, and open or probe representative files on the VPS. Check directory and file permissions for the encoder account, verify the playlist paths, and test that the playback process can move from one item to the next.
YouTube does not receive the feed or reports poor stream health
Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and current key from the correct Live Control Room stream. Check that the key has not been reset, the encoder’s settings match YouTube’s current guidance, and the VPS has adequate outbound bandwidth with headroom. Inspect the preview and stream health before going live, and protect or reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming an archive, confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed for the videos, music, and other material, including any applicable licenses. YouTube’s live-stream rules and channel policies apply to streamed content; transferring a file to your VPS does not establish permission to broadcast it. Review YouTube’s current guidance and the terms relevant to your content before scheduling a stream. Repeated or reused material can also raise channel monetization and policy questions, so do not treat uninterrupted playback as evidence that a channel qualifies for monetization.
