Start with H.264, 720p at 30 fps, and 3 Mbps video bitrate if your connection’s reliable upload capacity is uncertain. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 ingestion bitrate for 720p30. These are encoder settings—not guarantees that an Indian broadband connection, a particular ISP route, or your home network can sustain them. Test from the computer and connection you will use, then adjust based on OBS dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Choose a bitrate for your format, then test the connection
YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The table below shows its H.264 figures; the page does not show a publication year and does not provide an India-specific table. The minimum is not a recommended quality target. YouTube’s encoder guidance is a reference for encoder output, not a measurement of your broadband service or the complete route to YouTube.
| H.264 format | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use the row matching your stream’s actual resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s same guidance lists 720p30 AV1/H.265 at 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended, and 1080p30 AV1/H.265 at 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. If you configure one of those codecs, use its corresponding guidance rather than the H.264 row.
A slow-moving documentary loop may look acceptable at a lower bitrate than fast-moving footage, but YouTube does not publish a special lower bitrate for loops. Treat a lower setting as a quality compromise to test, not as a guaranteed safe rate.

Measure usable upload on the streaming connection
Run an upload speed test from the same computer and connection that will send the stream. If possible, repeat it at times when the household or workplace has its usual network load. Advertised download speed is not upload capacity, and a single speed-test result cannot prove that the route to YouTube will remain stable throughout a long stream.
OBS’s dropped-frame troubleshooting suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for selecting bitrate. That is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a rule validated for every Indian broadband connection. Congestion, competing devices, Wi-Fi interference, and routing can all affect sustained performance. Leave room for audio and ordinary network variation rather than assigning the full measured upload result to video. No bitrate can be recommended for a particular Indian ISP, city, plan, or household without testing that connection. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guidance.

Set OBS and YouTube’s stream options
For a straightforward compatibility-oriented setup, use H.264 over RTMPS. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1; it recommends RTMPS because it encrypts delivery to Google’s servers. YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio.
- Select the YouTube service and RTMPS server in OBS’s streaming settings. Use the stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup; keep it private, since anyone with it could send a stream to your channel.
- Choose the video encoder and target. Set H.264 for the compatibility-first baseline, and choose the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast, such as 720p30. Select a video bitrate using the matching YouTube row, bounded by the stable upload capacity you measured.
- Set rate control to CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Configure audio with AAC where available. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps.
- Run a representative test before relying on the loop. Include audio and movement similar to the actual video, then check both OBS’s dropped-frame statistics and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
YouTube’s advanced encoder recommendations also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames and one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. Whether particular controls are exposed depends on the OBS encoder and hardware. For a basic setup, prioritize the matching bitrate, CBR, keyframes, audio compatibility, and a successful representative test.

Adjust for a long-running loop
A loop does not change YouTube’s bitrate categories: select codec, resolution, and frame rate first. Long duration does make a preflight test and monitoring important. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video movement; OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate.
- If the picture quality is inadequate but the stream is stable, test a higher supported bitrate or resolution only if the upload connection and encoder can sustain it.
- If the loop is mostly static, you can test a lower bitrate as a quality trade-off. Low motion alone does not establish that the stream will remain reliable.
- If the loop runs for hours, do not treat a brief successful preview as proof of sustained stability. Observe stream health during the actual run where practical.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and disconnections
- OBS reports network-related dropped frames: lower the video bitrate and test again. If the issue persists, try a different YouTube server or route if one is available.
- The connection is on Wi-Fi and fluctuates: test with Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can connect compatible devices, but it cannot increase the ISP’s upload service or fix upstream congestion.
- Disconnects continue after lowering bitrate: check one factor at a time, including VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, router or modem problems, and route congestion. Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve the issue.
- You are considering OBS dynamic bitrate: OBS describes this as a beta option that lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce interruptions, but it lowers image quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
