For a local prerecorded video or playlist, OBS Studio is the most direct FFmpeg alternative: use a looping Media Source for one file, or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Your computer must stay on and connected while it streams. If you want a cloud-hosted YouTube loop instead, StreamNeo is the first option to consider for always-on playback; its first day is free, with no card required.
Which FFmpeg alternative fits your loop?
The right choice depends on whether you need a file to repeat on a computer you control, a finite prerecorded event hosted online, or an always-on cloud stream. The options below are not interchangeable: a tool that schedules a video a limited number of times is not necessarily a 24/7 looping service.
| Option | Best fit | What it supports | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Always-on YouTube playback from the cloud | Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, including up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot. | YouTube only; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. |
| OBS Studio | A local single-file or playlist loop | OBS Media Source can loop one file; VLC Video can loop a playlist. | The computer must remain on and stream. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source. |
| Restream | A scheduled cloud-hosted prerecorded event | Its Help Center documents paid video looping for up to 10 repeats, with a maximum 40-hour stream. | This is a bounded event, not documented as an unlimited 24/7 loop. Confirm current plan eligibility before relying on it. |
| StreamYard | A browser studio for finite prerecorded segments | Its plan page lists prerecorded-stream allowances of 2 hours on Core and 4 hours on Advanced. | Those allowances do not establish unlimited playlist looping; check current plan details. |
| AJA HELO Plus | Scheduled playback without a computer, using standalone hardware | YouTube describes the device’s optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live. | It is a specialized hardware route, not a typical software replacement. Hardware pricing and availability are not established here. |
StreamNeo is #1 for a continuous prerecorded YouTube loop when you want the stream to run from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with a free first day. For a free local software workflow, OBS is the practical starting point.
Loop a prerecorded file or playlist with OBS
OBS acts as the encoder: it takes the media source, encodes the output, and sends it to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends previewing and monitoring the stream before and during the broadcast.

Before you start
- Install OBS Studio on a computer that can remain powered on and connected for the full stream.
- For a playlist, install VLC as well; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16.
- Use media you have the rights to stream, including music and any material within a documentary. Calling a prerecorded feed “live” does not change copyright or YouTube policy obligations.
- Check upload capacity: YouTube recommends at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, and recommends testing the setup.
Configure a single looping video
- In YouTube Studio: create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in a public screen capture.
- In OBS: open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server configuration, use the stream URL YouTube provides. Labels can vary slightly by OBS version.
- Add the file: in the scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, then select the local video file.
- Enable looping: in the Media Source properties, check Loop. If the source should begin again when the scene becomes active, enable Restart playback when source becomes active.
- Set output to match your material and connection: choose an output resolution and frame rate that your computer and upload connection can sustain. Set a constant bitrate suitable for that output, and use a 2-second keyframe interval as a practical YouTube encoder setting. Do not choose a bitrate that consumes all measured upload bandwidth; preserve the recommended 20% headroom.
- Preview before going live: check framing, audio, playback and the YouTube Studio preview. Start streaming from OBS and confirm YouTube receives the feed before treating the broadcast as underway.
- Keep the system running: disable sleep for the duration, keep OBS open, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube Studio. A local loop stops if the computer, OBS, power or internet connection fails.
Configure a playlist
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source from the Sources panel. If it is missing, install VLC and restart OBS.
- Open the source properties, add the files in the order you want, and enable playlist looping.
- Check each item in the preview, including audio level and aspect ratio, then start the YouTube encoder stream and monitor it as you would a single-file loop.
OBS’s Media Source and VLC Video looping support is documented by the OBS Project (2022). The exact interface wording can differ by release, but the distinction remains: Media Source loops one file; VLC Video handles a playlist.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer, OBS session or home internet connection has to stay on.

What to know before a long YouTube Live broadcast
Eligibility, stream key and monitoring
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to use the stream URL and stream key provided in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. Verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel well before an event, and use Studio’s preview to confirm the incoming feed before relying on it.

Bandwidth, archive and duration
YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Measure the available upload capacity under realistic household or office conditions, not just at an idle moment. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer broadcast will be available as one complete archive. If an archive matters, plan a shorter event or keep a separate local recording.
Copyright and reused material
Check that you have permission for every video, soundtrack, image and clip in the loop, and follow YouTube’s current policies. Looping a documentary or music program does not itself establish rights, and describing a prerecorded feed as live does not remove copyright or monetization-policy obligations. A looping broadcast can also appear repetitive to viewers; consider whether a continuous stream is appropriate for the material and audience.

Troubleshooting a prerecorded YouTube loop
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The Media Source stops at the end | Loop is not enabled for that source. | Open its properties and enable Loop; test the transition at the end of the file. |
| VLC Video is not available in OBS | VLC is not installed or OBS has not detected it. | Install VLC, restart OBS, and check the source list again. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect or stale stream key, wrong stream URL, or live streaming is not enabled. | Check the current encoder details in YouTube Studio, replace the key in OBS if needed, and verify channel eligibility. |
| The stream buffers or drops frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the encoder is overloaded. | Reduce output bitrate or resolution, close bandwidth-heavy applications, and retest while preserving YouTube’s 20% upload headroom recommendation. |
| Audio or picture is missing in the preview | Wrong file/source, muted audio, incompatible media or scene layout. | Test the file locally, inspect OBS audio meters and source visibility, then confirm the YouTube preview before going live. |
| The broadcast stops when unattended | For OBS, the computer slept, lost power or internet, or OBS closed. For a hosted service, the event may have reached its documented duration or repeat limit. | Disable sleep and monitor local equipment for OBS; for hosted services, confirm the current plan’s event cap. Restream’s documented loop limit is 10 repeats and 40 hours, not unlimited operation. |
Costs and choosing a route
OBS is software-based, but its local method still depends on the computer, power and internet connection staying available. Cloud services shift the streaming operation away from the home computer, but their event limits and plan eligibility differ. Restream’s loop is paid and capped; StreamYard lists finite prerecorded durations on Core and Advanced. Check current vendor plan terms before scheduling an event because these can change. StreamNeo’s slot-based pricing and free first day are listed above.
