The cause depends on what you mean by “YouTube playlist.” OBS can play a media playlist inside a VLC Video source, but the available documentation does not establish that OBS is reading a YouTube playlist. First identify the OBS source type; then check the VLC dependency, compare a failing file with one that works, and review the file and source settings. The title alone does not identify a single cause.
First, identify which playlist and source you mean
In OBS, a VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and can play a playlist. A Media Source is a different source type. You may also have added several individual Media Sources rather than one playlist source. Check the source name in the OBS Sources panel before changing settings. OBS’s VLC Video documentation describes the playlist source and its controls.
If by “YouTube playlist” you mean a playlist hosted on YouTube, the sources available here do not establish that OBS is reading it directly. Confirm whether the entries are local files, network URLs, or something else; those cases can fail for different reasons.
Check the VLC installation if you use VLC Video
The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. OBS says that a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. Confirm both the source type and the application architecture before treating a playlist problem as a file problem.

- Check whether the source is named VLC Video or Media Source.
- If it is VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Record the OBS and VLC versions and your operating system; they are important context for diagnosing a reproducible failure.
Isolate the file before changing the playlist
- Open the failing file in a media player outside OBS. Check whether it plays through to the end, has sound and picture as expected, and appears complete rather than truncated.
- Play a file known to work in the same OBS source. If that file plays while the suspect one fails, focus on the failing file’s integrity, container, encoding, or other compatibility details.
- Compare the files’ formats and encodings rather than relying on their extensions alone. OBS lists supported extensions for Media Source, but an extension does not prove that every file with that extension is valid or compatible with a particular setup. - If the entry is an online URL, compare it separately with local files. A failure limited to network-hosted entries points to a different diagnostic branch than one affecting local media.
An OBS issue report used an invalid MP4 in a VLC-source crash reproduction. That makes file validity worth checking, but the report does not prove that an invalid file explains every skip or freeze. The report is specific to its reproduction scenario.
Review VLC playlist and visibility settings
In the VLC Video source’s properties, check whether Loop or Shuffle is enabled and confirm the playlist entries are the ones you expect. Review the source’s visibility behavior as well: OBS offers stop-and-restart, pause-and-resume, or always-play behavior when the source is hidden. A scene change or source becoming hidden can therefore affect what happens to playback.

The source also exposes a network caching setting. Consider it when network-hosted entries behave differently from local files, but do not assume that increasing caching will repair a local-file stall. OBS documents the control; it does not describe it as a universal fix.
Match the symptom to the right evidence
Playlist items skip at their boundaries
A report filed against OBS 29.1.3 on Windows 10 described MP3 playlist items losing about a second at the beginning and end. This is a report of a particular configuration and symptom, not evidence that all MP3 playlists—or current OBS versions—have the same problem. Read the issue in its version and platform context.

Video appears frozen but audio continues
An older report about mixed audio and video files in VLC Video described a frozen video frame while audio continued. If your symptom matches, note whether audio carries on during the apparent freeze; that distinction can help describe the problem. The report concerned older OBS versions and does not establish a current general defect. See the historical report.
The problem is audible only in local monitoring
A report involving macOS 12 and OBS 28.0.3 described delayed VLC controls and audio monitoring. A project member said the recording captured skips correctly while monitored audio was buffered; the issue was closed in July 2023. If the recording or stream is clean but local monitoring sounds delayed, distinguish that from a playback fault in the output. This historical case does not establish that current macOS builds share the issue. See the report and its discussion.

Consider another playlist source only after basic checks
The OBS forum lists a third-party Media Playlist Source plugin, which uses Media Source internally and describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version. It may be worth investigating if you have isolated the problem to VLC Video, but the available information does not establish that the plugin fixes it. Before installing, check its current maintenance status and compatibility with your OBS version. View the plugin’s OBS forum listing.

Change one variable at a time so you can tell which change affects the symptom. Test a known-good file and the failing file in the same source, then note what happens when the source is hidden or a scene changes. If practical, capture an OBS log from a session in which the issue occurs and include the file details and versions when seeking support.

- Only one file fails: verify that it plays completely outside OBS and compare its encoding and container with a working file.
- All VLC playlist entries fail: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Only network entries fail: separate that behavior from local-file playback and review the network caching setting.
- Video freezes while sound continues: record whether the audio remains uninterrupted.
- Only monitoring sounds delayed: check whether the recorded or streamed output has the same issue.
- Failure follows a scene change or hidden source: review the VLC source’s visibility behavior.
For a useful diagnosis, gather the source type, operating system, OBS and VLC versions, the failing file’s details, whether other files work in the same source, whether audio continues during a freeze, and whether the problem appears in the recording or only in preview or monitoring.
