Best Bitrate for 1080p Pre-Recorded Videos on YouTube Live

For 1080p YouTube Live, use 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps. AV1 and H.265 targets are lower; match the outgoing feed, not the upload file.

For a pre-recorded video streamed to YouTube Live, use the bitrate recommended for the outgoing live feed: H.264 at 1080p30, 14 Mbps; H.264 at 1080p60, 17 Mbps. With AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60. The right choice depends on the live encoder’s codec and frame rate—not simply on the video being 1080p.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for 1080p

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance gives these bitrate targets and minimums. They apply to the video signal sent to YouTube, and are recommendations rather than guarantees of visual quality.

Outgoing live format YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), 1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), 1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published live-ingest settings; the Help page does not state a publication or update year. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for the current table.

Choose the row that matches your stream

Match the outgoing frame rate

Use the 30 fps row when the encoder sends 30 fps, and the 60 fps row when it sends 60 fps. A stored video’s frame rate is a useful guide when you preserve it for playback, but what matters for the bitrate table is the encoder output sent to YouTube. Avoid converting 30 fps footage to 60 fps solely to select a different target.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Match the ingest codec

Identify whether your encoder sends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. Do not apply the H.264 target to an AV1 or H.265 feed—or the other way around. Encoder availability and settings vary by software or streaming service.

Prefer the recommended target when your connection can sustain it

The minimum is YouTube’s stated lower figure, not its recommended target. Set the encoder to the recommended bitrate if your upload connection can deliver it consistently. If it cannot, reduce the target or address the connection problem rather than assuming a nominal speed test guarantees a stable stream.

Set the rest of the live encoder correctly

Bitrate is only one part of a stable feed. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs and frame rates up to 60 fps. Apply the settings your encoder supports, and verify that its output matches the codec and frame-rate row you selected.

  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when available.
  • Rate control: Use CBR rather than a variable bitrate target.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Send 1080p at the intended 30 or 60 fps, without an unnecessary frame-rate conversion.
  • Bitrate: Enter the recommended value for the actual outgoing codec and frame rate.

Test a pre-recorded stream before relying on it

  1. Confirm the output settings. Check the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR mode, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
  2. Check outbound capacity. Test the connection from the system or service that will send the stream. Its upload must sustain the selected video bitrate reliably; a brief speed-test result alone does not establish that it will.
  3. Run a representative pre-stream test. Include the same audio and similar picture movement as the planned video. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Watch YouTube stream health. Check the live control room’s stream-health information during the test and the actual stream. If it reports delivery problems, lower the bitrate or improve the outbound connection, then test again.

These checks matter for pre-recorded material too: playback may be predictable, but the outgoing feed still has to reach YouTube continuously.

Live bitrate is not the same as upload-file bitrate

A pre-recorded video can be encoded once as a file and then encoded or transmitted again as a live feed. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for those two situations. Its upload guidance lists 8 Mbps for 1080p standard-frame-rate files and 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate files; those figures are not the live-ingest targets above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Troubleshoot common bitrate problems

YouTube reports an unstable or poor-quality stream

First compare the actual encoder output with the chosen table row. Then check whether the outbound connection can sustain that bitrate throughout the stream. Reduce the bitrate if needed, and repeat a representative test while monitoring stream health.

The stream looks soft despite meeting the target

The recommended bitrate is not a visual-quality guarantee. Confirm the outgoing resolution, frame rate, and codec, and avoid selecting a target from the wrong row. Fast motion and image detail can affect how a given bitrate looks; test with representative scenes rather than judging only a static opening frame.

The file’s bitrate differs from the live setting

That alone does not show that the live configuration is wrong. The stored file and the live encoder output are different stages; configure the feed sent to YouTube using the live recommendations.
